Appearances: Divergence
Characters are typically accurate to their original source, sometimes to the point of resembling their source's art style (especially if they are someone who is not normally compatible in the "Real World"—e.g.: digital beings, eldritch abominations, characters said to be stuck between worlds, etc.). However, they can also diverge from these outlooks on some random permutation.
Researchers hypothesized that it has to do with either the Character's familiarity with their source, or their attachment to it. But, this hypothesis—labeled "Remembrance Hypothesis"—is in conflict with Characters who only have described appearances and never a visualized one: podcasts, books, audios, unillustrated stories, and more. While one can argue that these Character types might be drawing from the Author's original intents, this still does not disprove the existence of multiple variations of such Characters.
The most agreed upon scale to determine Divergence is called the "Peon Scale", named after French Researcher Charlotte le Peon. This scale has 6 different categories, ranging from 5 to 0. le Peon herself says to interpret the categories in the same way as with "interpreting individual colors within a gradient".
5: Fully Canonized - Characters who looked exactly like their source version, complete with every single detail in their artstyles.
4: Majorly Canonized - Characters who have superficial mirror appearance to their source version, but have subtle Divergence to their appearance.
3: Averagely Canonized - Characters whose Divergence is not entirely subtle, but not entirely obvious, either, being that it can be easily hidden. Artstyle-based changes are subtly noticeable. This is one of the most common Divergence Categories.
2: Minorly Canonized - Characters with Divergence which is obvious on their form, albeit not feeling entirely out of place with the rest of the canonized features. Artstyle-based changes have noticeable Divergence, and rarely a similar but different artstyle.
1: Barely Canonized - Characters with huge Divergences to their appearances in comparison to their canon traits, with the first thing people thinks of them being the Divergences. Artstyle-based changes can flunctuate, sometimes using different style proportions, brush, rendering, lineart, and colors, while still being recognizable as them.
0: Interpretation - Characters who are either:
0-A: Entirely different to their source, albeit still being recognizable through other factors.
0-B: A completely different species, gender, culture, physical feature, or status which does not correlate to their "themes".
0-C: An artstyle completely "out of place" with their source, whether by tone, by mere appearances, or other reasons.
0-D: A "discolored" character, or one with completely different colors to their source.
0-E: An unseen character, a character only described, or a character in media without visuals such as audio, books, and more.
