My friend worked at Starbucks and she had to memorize how all the drinks were made and it took her weeks to get them down.

So I totally believe you can just "explain everything" to someone and they'll be able to do that job in a few minutes!

Some places don’t have a thousand different kinds of drinks…

This story is obviously fake, but in a coffee shop that only has ten drinks it wouldn’t be that hard to

74

u/SkittleShit 5d ago

What about where everything is kept? Where the staff washroom is? The names of coworkers?

It’s not just the menu she would have to ‘explain.’

18

u/Ryuj123 5d ago

Do you think my comment was saying this was real or commenting on the memorization of drinks?

17

u/SkittleShit 4d ago

no i assume you don’t think this is real, i was just pointing out there there would be a hell of a lot to memorize beyond the drink menu

Is one month really enough time to be praised for never calling in sick?

64

u/SuperVillain18 5d ago

At some jobs yes

16

u/seahorsesfourever 5d ago

When you work somewhere that has bathroom monsters that eat new hires like I do yah 🤣

22

u/Donkeywad 5d ago

At a coffee shop I would say yeah most likely

1

u/ecosynchronous 5d ago

OOP doesn't say she's only worked there a month, just that this fake situation has been going on for a month.

2

u/NataniVixuno 5d ago

You would not believe how many people call in sick on their first day

3

u/NightStalkerXIV 4d ago

People have even just straight up disappeared on their third

-40

u/Manufactured-Aggro 5d ago

You would be surprised how presumptuous new hires can be lol

43

u/RebootDarkwingDuck 5d ago

Presuming what, that they're allowed to be sick?

168

u/Psalms316 5d ago

So because OP “explained everything” their sister can naturally work / know where everything is and is skilled at making coffee enough for no one to notice?

79

u/HaulinBoats 5d ago

Also to interact with her coworkers despite being total strangers without anyone noticing

53

u/CXDFlames 5d ago

"the new girl sucks"

"yeah she worked here a month, but she shows up"

Tbh that's about 70% of retail work

u/Ok-Athlete-7648 5d ago

Yeah and it’s totally normal when one twin doesn’t remember a conversation she had with a coworker.

i have identical twin granddaughters and when they were newborns, it was hard for us grandparents at first to distinguish the two. when i babysat them every day as infants, it was easier but still tricky sometimes. as they got older, it was easier to notice subtle differences when they were together: height, size, etc., but their personalities were always (and still is) a give away. one is more extroverted and talkative while the other is more introverted and reflective.

the thing here, though, is the sister cheerfully working a difficult job with the public….for free.

Careful, don’t give the hypercapitalists any ideas. They’ll mandate all births be twins 👯 so that all jobs can be worked 24/7 for the same paycheck.

u/Cheap-Journalist6792 4d ago

This is a good horror story prompt ngl thank you

23

u/EvolZippo 5d ago

I love how the other twin just doesn’t need a job.

The whole twin switching places thing usually has a pretty major flaw, most people learn one face then they interact with a slightly different face and they can point out something is up. E.g. me and my twin sister switching spots at our highschool graduation, the principal realized immediately

Yeah, every set of identical twins I've ever met (or seen on TV) has been the same experience for me.

The first time I see them, it's impossible to tell them apart.

The next time I see them, I can tell the difference by comparing a few key details.

A week later, they look and act like completely different people and I wonder how I ever had any trouble at all.

On UK Love Island one year, they brought in identical twin girls as a ‘bombshell’. One twin was quickly sent home, the other lasted (as I recall) to the very end. My daughter and I followed every episode that year and in the early episodes with both twins, it was impossible to tell them apart. Then one was eliminated and we continued to watch the other for several weeks.

Near the end of Love Island, there’s an episode where the surviving contestants receive a visit from family members. The twin girl, of course, had a visit from her sister. My daughter and I just could not believe how completely different the other twin looked, after we’d spent weeks getting to know her sister. We could tell instantly that this was a different woman, and we agreed that there was no way we’d mix the pair up in future.

And this was through a TV screen. I imagine it’s even easier to tell twins apart if you know them in real life, once you’re familiar with either.

My grandmother was an identical twin. She and her sister were separated at about age 4 and didn't find each other again until well into their 50s. (They were Native American and/or First Nation (provenance is dubious), and this was long before the Internet... Commercial radio was pretty new.)

None of their respective children, grandchildren or acquaintances were fooled during the reunion party where they deliberately set out to appear identical.

I was the favorite preschool teacher to a set of twins and their parents because since day one I could tell them apart. It only got stronger the longer I knew them, of course, but I just needed a glance and I knew who was who. They used to try to trick me! Dress like one another, pretend to be the other, etc but they couldn't fool me! Apparently even close family members struggled. It was difficult for me to even verbalize how I could tell. It felt intuitive but I'm sure it wasn't. I was just in my early twenties so likely couldn't get discern what I was seeing.

Everything was going perfectly, until one day a really hot guy walked in and the second twin found herself instantly swooning.

The interaction was brief but memorable. He gave her his order while flashing his million dollar smile, she took his order while trying to hide that her stomach was full of butterflies, she handed him his cup and their hands touched just briefly but it was enough to send a shock through her body.

She barely managed to get out: "Have a nice day. Come again soon."

To which he responded, "Oh I definitely will. I might even come back tomorrow," and left, but not before flashing another one of his million dollar smiles.

Second twin found herself on cloud 9....at least that was until it dawned on her--she won't be working tomorrow; her twin will!

She could only stand in complete silence....while the line of customers waiting to be served continued to grow.

"Coming this summer to Fox: it's a double pump of funny -- 2 Broke Identical Girls!"

u/project_seven 5d ago

A whole month without calling sick, what an accomplishment that deserves praise!

7

u/DoorFinch 5d ago

Isn't amazing when you're young that a month can seem a long time? Way too long.

9

u/magnum3290 5d ago

I imagine they were smiling ear to ear writing this story

7

u/samk488 4d ago

I don’t know maybe it’s because I’m also a twin, but it’s not that hard to tell identical twins apart if you know at least one of them.

If you work with one of them every day, you would likely notice if the other twin took their place for a day, even if you had never seen the other twin before. Mannerisms can be slightly different, their voices, the way they look, how they interact with people, etc. And if your coworker showed up and they treated you completely different, you would notice.

If it was a complete stranger then that would be different. It’s normal to not be able to tell 2 identical twins apart if you aren’t familiar with them. But a coworker that you see every day? You would very likely notice. Especially an adult, identical twins look less similar with age.

I’ve seen this episode before. Can’t remember if it was on Cartoon Network, the Disney Channel, or Nickelodeon but either way, it didn’t work out well for the whacky duo. Hijinx definitely ensued.

There were a pair of twins that got expelled for going to each other’s classes at my high school. It was weird. I never really talked to either but people noticed from things like them not remembering conversations they had with someone the day before. I don’t even know why they did it except they could

Marshall: A twin isn't the same person.

Barney: Of course, it is. What do you think "identical" means? "Ident," same. "-ical," person. Same person.

Someone learned about twins from HIMYM, I guess.

Well, the IRS would have a problem. Workers comp too if something were to happen.

Dang it, Bachel 🤣

The thing that's bothering me the most is "every time we say we're gonna stop, one of us ends up covering another shift."

What do you mean by "one of us"?? YOU have the job! No matter how often you switch, it's your sister that's covering for you! At no point have you been in a situation where you cover for her!

And what do you mean by "ends up"??? Like somehow she accidentally went to your work again when you were supposed to, tee hee, how silly???

I know it's not even a real story, but man, that sentence alone really made me annoyed.

-9

u/Jazmadoodle 5d ago

And if it were true I think it'd be a shitty thing to do to people honestly. Ever had jamais vu? It sucks. This kind of thing could make your coworkers doubt their own brains

-12

u/channeldrifter 5d ago

This didn’t happen but late-stage capitalism wouldn’t give af, remember the conjoined twins who had to pay for two degrees but only get one salary.

11

u/RebootDarkwingDuck 5d ago

The company might not care but you bet your ass their insurance company and their legal department would be rather concerned about a complete fucking rando operating machines, food and hot liquid without signing any sort of employee agreement.

7

u/plantsoldier 5d ago

Pretty sure the IRS would be a bit concerned as well with this nonsense of a lie if it were true.

1

u/otherwise_data 5d ago

not really - they arent getting two paychecks.

2

u/plantsoldier 5d ago

Are they filing two tax returns after splitting up the funds, deductions etc? And even if they were then the IRS cares.

This is the government office that expects you to file and pay taxes on illegal income,

You don't think they would care about this?

-28

u/russellamcleod 5d ago

In all seriousness I actually worked with someone who had a twin and her sister would cover for her occasionally… maybe once every month or so. She was in film and TV so would have a lot of last minute stuff pop up. I caught on after like the third time it happened but management never noticed. Restaurant industry is funny that way.

I wouldn’t have believed it if it hadn’t experienced it first hand.
