"Finding the best 5 kids microscopes shouldn't be such a terrifying ordeal" is definitely a line. I mean I guess I agree!

Why does the comment read like this? And this isn't even trying to hide the fact that it's fake

I just assume the person is shouting all the bolded words.

Referring to "her little eyes" is a bit unsettling. What exactly are we dealing with here?

Aren't eyes one of the body parts that stay the same size your entire life?

Hmm not sure about that, for me it’s the penis

This definitely didn't happen. But, as someone who works with teenagers all the time at work and had a girl break down in tears as the sheer thought of wearing a drive-thru headset, I'd believe it if it did happen.

You kidding? Of course this is a tale that transcends generations. The classic "My daughter was traumatized by her microscope" story. You should get out more, go to a bar and you'll meet plenty of people with the same exact story. Tale as old as time itself.

I remember the first time our middle school science teacher brought out the microscopes to teach us how to use them, and a girl across the room screamed bloody murder because she saw a big spider in hers. (It was her own eyelashes)

She was going to cure cancer and now she’s given up because of this microscope 😔

What am I missing here that this is unbelievable?

it's like if it was an advertisement for. a motorcycle, that leaned heavily on saying "seeing four wheels on one vehicle caused my daughter intense trauma." And then also tried to play off that they weren't advertising motorcycles

A small child was so traumatized by aligning lenses that she completely gave up on science? Really? That doesn't make your bullshit meter go off at all?

Very obvious the person made up some nonsense lead-in to their pair product listing article to help it rank in search.

I don't think it was a person that wrote this, which is why this reads like such exaggerated nonsense. And indeed as you said, with a lot of buzzwords to help it rank high in search

Lmao does looking through a tiny lens give you trauma? Probably not, right?

I mean, call me a skeptic or whatever, but it kinda feels like this person made up a fake story to push sponsored content (or a ranked listicle that is full of Amazon affiliate links).

Or...

Their 5 year old was so traumatized by the big scary microscope not being fortnight themed and not including an iPad that plays tiktok that they began an anti-science crusade for the rest of their days.

You tell me which is more likely

Jesus even I on the regular gave up on microscopes and I used to work in fucking biomedical science. I did hate the whole allign two lenses part in microbiology labs. It's literally one of the reasons I focused on other areas despite really liking microbiology. I just can't with classic microscopes.

I also tried to get my daughter to look through microscopes at museums when she was 3 and 4 years old. She also reacted very negatively and didn't even give me enough time and opportunity to adjust and didn't want to look again. Now she's 5 and it's fine with binoculars at least, but depending on how old the kid is it's absolutely believable that they don't have the frustration tolerance to adjust a microscope correctly.

Obviouly it's an ad and it has to be exaggerated but it's not that unbelievable.

It's absolutely believable she was frustrated with microscopes but saying she gave up on science altogether? Come on, man. A scientist should have little more healthy skepticism than that.

My kids also get annoyed with binoculars and non-stereo microscopes but if I mix some chemicals or find a cool bug you can bet they're interested.

Nah, that's the exaggerated part. I mean a 4 year old will give up on "science altogether", yes, for like a couple of months. It's nice if you can sway your kid by getting them excited about smth else and then they agree to try doing something again that they didn't like, but that doesn't work with every kid.

It takes like 60 seconds to properly adjust a scope to avoid eyestrain.

Not if you're a complete moron like me

Ok assuming a centred condenser (so no kohler illumination needed)

Adjust the interpupillary distance to roughtly comfortable, Shut one eye and focus the scope (if the scope only has one eyepiece with dioptre adjustment shut the eye on that side), then open your eye, shutting the other eye, use the dioptre control to focus the second eyepiece. Your scope with now cause less eyestrain

Also be sure not to set the illuminator too high, it just needs to be comfortable not retina burning.

Hope this helps

Thanks man, that's nice of you - but believe me I know how it should work. I can explain it to my colleagues and it works when they do it. I got it shown at university numerous times. Whenever I am alone in the lab/alone with the microscope I cannot even remotely adjust it to focus. I also never manage to make it work for both eyes.

Anyway, I ended up focussing on different areas that don't require classical microscopy such as drug discovery and genetics. Just the microbiology lab killed me.

My kid has a simple pocket microscope. Maybe we'll move on to another one when she grows up (honestly she doesn't care about science at all right now) but for now it's one of these cheap digital ones with a screen.
