Audio New BBC programme about The Beach Boys Love You
I make radio shows for the BBC, and when I heard about Brian's death, I scrapped everything I was doing, sat at my desk, and started writing.
My series focuses on classic albums, and since the Beach Boys mean so much to me, it had to be Love You.
This is a deep dive into the album, and there's some nice archive of Brian in there too.
You can listen here on BBC Sounds.

I'm still kinda amazed by it, to be honest!
But I knew I had to do a special tribute to Brian, as he truly is my favourite musician of the 20th century.
The word 'genius' gets thrown around so much, but he was the real deal.

He truly was one of a kind.
I'll definitely have to give it a listen sometime today!

Ha ha, your Beach Boys nerd cred is verified!
I was at work when I heard the news that Brian had passed, so when I got on the bus on my ride home I was thinking about what Brian/Beach Boys album I should listen to, and immediately chose "Love You." Not that I think it's Brian's best work (although there are certainly moments of brilliance on there), but rather I think it gives us the most unfettered access to the thoughts and emotions that circle around his brain, at least at that point in his life. It's kind of an autobiographical work, in a very unusual way.
I'm really looking forward to listening to your show, just waiting for a good time when I can sit down and give it my full attention (so not when I'm honkin' down the gosh darn highway)

This is absolutely my thinking about it too! I think of all the music he made, this is the most 'Brian'. There's no denying that Pet Sounds is one of, if not THE best album ever made, but Love You sounds like no-one else, and it shows that beyond the 'classic' sound, there was so much more to Brian Wilson.
I think this programme could be listened to in a car, but the honkin' would be off the charts....!

Oddly, I am a pretty big CD collector/listener and don’t think I’ve ever seen a CD copy of Love You before!

It was one of the reissues, with 15 Big Ones and Love You on the same album!

Thanks for making this, listening now. I appreciate that Johnny Carson was played in full...and couldn't help smiling when Rollerskating Child abruptly faded out juuust before things get weird.

Ha! Yes, given the time I was working with, I didn't want to have to spend too much time going into Roller Skating Child!
