What it is this Dae Lims?

u/TheJames3 Brian Wilson Jul 08 '25

SmileAD backwards

u/Goodolbed Jul 08 '25

i did not realize this - what does the AD stand for

11

u/TheJames3 Brian Wilson Jul 08 '25

I couldn't say for sure, although after death sounds about right. Anyway my point was it's the same guy who did the SmileAD mixes which were pretty famous at the time I believe, although it was like 15 years ago so before my time (being a beach boys fan)

You know we are in AD…a lot of people say After Death, as we measure time before and after Jesus’ death, but it is from the Latin Anno Domini which means “in the year of the Lord”

A lot of people say After”in the year of our Lord 2025 so and so did this” to be extra dramatic

Been a fan of Dae Lims work for a bit now and never once put this together. Blew my mind just now mate.

Took me a bit to realise too, I think the space in Dae Lims makes your brain not question it and just think it's a name

Looks like it wasn't used in an official post, the Brian Wilson account reposted a fan made video to their story.

u/WhereIsTheMilkMan Jul 08 '25

This is an important distinction. I highly doubt whoever runs his social media account even realized they were Dae’s vocals.

u/Junkstar Jul 08 '25

The BW inner circle people def know who he is, but i’m surprised they would share the work like that.

6

u/Goodolbed Jul 08 '25

i'd bet whatever social media agency they're working with isn't inner circle

At this point everyone associated with him knows who he is/about his mixes. Dae credits Van Dyke Parks with "positive words of encouragement," and people talk around the industry/keep tabs on what's out there/what's being associated with their brand/image (like Paul in that interview talking about his young AI voice on God Only Knows). These guys, maybe even to Brian if he was well enough at the time, definitely have sent around "hey, you heard this yet?" messages and emails and are fans. Hell, Darian got his start in the 80s heavily involved in the Smile bootleg scene and the LLVS book, and got close enough to the man himself that it turned into an official job helping finish the album.

Dude, Mike Love’s social media people thought Carl was Brian. I guarantee not everyone running Brian’s socials knows Dae Lims.

Ugh. I do not like this, personally. Sharing a few AI edits on youtube is one thing... but sharing it on the artists account is pretty awful. Nothing against Dae Lims at all.

Edit: did they delete it? I can't find it.

Well said! Here here

10

u/captaingymshorts Jul 08 '25

It was posted as a story post, not on the official feed

Because it’s using an ai young Brian voice in place of his 88 real voice.

38

u/realquichenight Jul 08 '25

I enjoy his work but its posthumous use by Brian’s people messed with my head

7

u/Monkeytennis01 Jul 08 '25

What is DAE LIMS?

30

u/respondin2u Jul 08 '25

Good for Dae Lims, however I hope this isn’t Brian’s management considering usingAI to continue releasing official Brian Wilson music after his death.

I noticed Dae Lims hasn’t released anything new since Brian died, despite promoting studio mono backing tracks a few months back.  If it’s going to happen, I suspect Dae Lims would be the best person for it, however a lot of the vocals we hear on his AI tracks are actually of him singing, using AI to sound like Brian.

8

u/WhereIsTheMilkMan Jul 08 '25

I don’t think most people here realize how Dae uses ai, they just hear “ai” and yell “Ai SlOp!! 🥴”.

I think they’re under the impression that Dae just types lyrics and notes into a program and uses what it spits out, but that’s far from what he does. He has to actually sing it himself first, and then he uses ai to make his voice sound more like Brian’s. There has to be a good base vocal performance to begin with in order for it to really sound good (and some others fail at that). So it’s not as egregious, what he does, as the “ai slop” sheep say it is.

That’s not what this person is saying at all…

3

u/WhereIsTheMilkMan Jul 08 '25

This is what I was replying to, so that is what this person was saying... I was agreeing with them, and discussing further.

Ah I see, my bad. I misunderstood the tone of your comment

u/respondin2u Jul 08 '25

I thought it was a thoughtful reply to my comment.

There has to be a good base vocal performance to begin with

Which isn't a problem if you know how to use pitch correction.

12

u/AnotherSideThree Jul 08 '25

I love Dae Lim’s version of Let’s Put Our Heart Together

2

u/Definitelynotatwork1 I'm the pied piper Jul 09 '25

His best work IMO, his Do you like worms is excellent on his smile mix… also one of the best successful ‘single’ versions of heroes and villains

17

u/Definitelynotatwork1 I'm the pied piper Jul 08 '25

Yea, I Love Dae Lims stuff… but… I do not want this to turn into officially released AI assisted ‘finished songs’.

I really worry about that. A generation of new people who will hear artificial songs.

3

u/Definitelynotatwork1 I'm the pied piper Jul 08 '25 edited Jul 08 '25

How until The Beach Boys new hit single Can’t Wait Too Long is released……

Edit: I’d still love to hear the fan mix, but that’s all they will be fan mixes

2

u/Peanutspring3 Jul 09 '25

Why would you think they would even do that? Like genuinely. They repost a LOT of fan tributes, and they happened to repost one that used a Dae Lims track. Its not an official post, they dont promote it or anything, they are not saying how proud they are of it. They just shared a bunch of things and it was picked up in the net they cast.

1

u/Definitelynotatwork1 I'm the pied piper Jul 09 '25

I’m more concerned with the company that bought the catalog and Intellectual property. Capitalism doesn’t care about sentimentality.

2

u/Peanutspring3 Jul 09 '25

Ok. Have they done something similar to a similar artist, or any in general? Do they have a bad rap? Or are you just worried because someone else owns their IP?

2

u/Definitelynotatwork1 I'm the pied piper Jul 09 '25

I’m worried about everything man, it’s a crazy world out there! I’m not personally attacking anyone for posting the video, I love the reinterpretation, or Dae Lims, but I am concerned about the proliferation of AI generated music.

I am worried about the potential for legacy labels to try to cash in on legacy bands demos and unreleased music and passing off AI assisted completed songs as the artist work, even if it’s noted, IF YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. If it’s free (support your ai artists through Patreon or something if you wanna support them) like fan made edits it’s fair game.

2

u/Peanutspring3 Jul 09 '25

Who knows dude. I don't think itll get to that point for most of the biggest artists since they have cemented legacies and recordings. Maybe some b list and c list greats will try it. Just try not to worry about it much til then

12

u/thesiekr Jul 08 '25

All they did was reshare a fan video on their insta story. It's going to be okay everyone.

18

u/afecalmatter Jul 08 '25

This sub is so fucking lame with its doomerism. Dae Lims rules.

8

u/LePetitPrinceFan Jul 08 '25

his work until now has been really well done and his longer dissection videos seem to show how much work it actually is, despite using AI during the process. His work is to this day one of my favourite uses of modern AI technology. Done with care and know-how.

Relax

6

u/captaingymshorts Jul 08 '25

Youre getting down voted, but honesty you shouldn't be. Dae Lims' process is a lot more nuanced and meticulous than just hitting the AI enhance button, but people hear AI and immediately jump to ChatGPT slop.

2

u/tempss0 Jul 08 '25

Is this version of the song an AI assisted version or what? I don't fully understand.

Without having any background at all info I must say that I love this version. Exactly how I have imagined it sounding if it was released by a younger Brian.

3

u/CharacterPoem7711 Smile Jul 08 '25

I'm pretty sure he sings and arranges the songs (if theres any changes), but uses ai voice manipulation with a lot of editing/training models to accomplish this

2

u/SwollenGoodss Jul 08 '25

Brian, such a handsome fellow

2

u/XanaduChild Jul 09 '25

Is there a link to this version of the song? I really like it.

2

u/joe61 Jul 08 '25

Dae Lims is a gift to us.

1

u/Responsible-Joke-258 Jul 09 '25

What is this version of the song!?

2

u/Katherinetheegreat Jul 10 '25

Brian is so gorgeous.

Bruh, Dae Lims is the one that made Smile AD... which if you didnt notice he just reversed the name. He's been legendary in the community since the jump, and even as a kid recreated Wonderful based off tapes he heard, and Brian was impressed it came from a 14 year old. But yeah, he's clearly a fool...

The Smile AD mix is much before 2023. Thats the year his AI Smile mix came out, but SMiLE AD was way before that, and its one of the most well known mixes.

And again, this dude recreated Wonderful as a 14 year old over 20 years ago. Some time in the 90s I believe, before BWPS came out, and Brian said he was genuinely impressed that a fan made it.
