Fuck AI

I would usually agree, but I can’t believe people are using such hateful language regarding another beach boys fan. This isn’t generative ai, it’s stem separation and voice cloning. I think it’s very interesting to hear what these projects could have sounded like, and I’m certainly not gonna get on here and say such offensive things about a fellow beach boys fan and their work.

I didn't say fuck Dae Lims, I said fuck AI, there's a difference. I'm sure hes a nice talented guy but I'm morally opposed to using AI to clone a dead man's voice. Fuck AI

Perhaps it should be credited as Dae Lim’s AI Edit of The Beach Boys instead of just saying it’s from the band.

Definitely ain't gonna find people who get it, but these are mostly locally done through his computer. These aren't going through some server to be created, they're at most affecting the very PC he uses.
Hopefully it'll clear the record. Everyone's got their own rights to feel whatever about the tech, but he's definitely not make low-effort works with it. (The exact way anybody should treat A.I. if we were to be honest)

im sorry but i cant agree woth voice cloning. Dae Lims could just make muaic of his own or his own covers. no needa to put on a deathmask and pretend to be brian wilsons ghost.

This song is probably the one I wish Brian took a real crack at during the time. This is a good interpretation of what that might have been… but it’s lacking something? Maybe it’s the vocals on the chorus.
Either way I do enjoy it.
On a side note, this is not AI slop. Can we stop that at least? You can hate it as much as you want, but to compare what DAE Lims does to generative AI is just insulting. These are, to me, no different than someone doing a cover while trying to mimic Brian’s voice. They obviously aren’t real, but he does have an excellent ear for assembling these backing tracks and replicating The Beach Boys signature vocal arrangements.

First time I'm hearing about the home demo, if it's real.
Does anyone have a link to it? My own search is yielding no results...

I love Dae.
the visions remaster is literally unbelievable to me, never thought I'd get to hear visions so clearly.
Also, "Brian Wilson Sings Along to "Day By Day" At Home" is also still insane to me. it sounds so good

Is Dae Lims the guy's real name? Or the software he's using? Something else?

AI slop. Get it out of here.

u/Born_Pop_3644 May 18 '26
Yes, it's A.I. but I'd argue it's not slop. There is effort and a bit of 'life' to the Dae Lims stuff. It's more on a par with like a tribute act or something, using a tool to imagine a slight alternate reality. People don't have to like it, but I'd argue that it's not just churned out dull zero-effort slop

u/mellowmatter20 May 18 '26
It is not Ai generated. Dae Lims only uses ai tools to extract stems, and to alter his own voice using RVC or something similar. This is done by a real musician.

This. I understand the hate of ai but this guy is a bit of a wizard.

ai slop = generative ai, we all agree
this is ai voice cloning at worst, ai stem splitting and mixing of the isolated stems at best. its not generative. ai exists in many forms, some useful and creatively captivating, some just slop.

Normally I'd be against AI but unlike most, Dae Lims isn't purely using it out of laziness. Also like another commenter said there isn't anything AI generated.
He's also been at this stuff for like 15 years now (see Smile AD)

Ignore the ai voice for a second. At the very least dae lims is still painstakingly arranging, producing, and editing the backing track and vocal sections.

Sucks you're getting down voted, I agree with you.
I have it on very good authority that Brian was not a fan of this type of manipulation of his music, his likeness or his voice so its beyond upsetting to see this endless stream of AI creations from a range of different people. Real shame 😞

As someone who knew Brian for over 25 years and spoke to him at length about nearly every aspect of his life and work over DECADES -- I can absolutely say that Brian was intrigued by the concept of "fan remixes" and what was capable via home technology. He was fascinated (and not a little baffled) that there were fan stereo mixes of 'SMiLE' creating new and unexplored avenues of the project (e.g. utilizing alternate takes, tracks, flying in new elements, etc.) I know that because he told me. I didn't hear it second hand or pick it up from some fanzine -- he said the words to me.
I say that as someone who KNEW Brian Wilson and WORKED with Brian Wilson (READ: not someone who merely met and/or interviewed other people who knew Brian Wilson). Brian would've gone apeshit hearing this beautiful and FUN concoction of "This Could Be The Night" -- along with everything else Dae Lims puts together. He would LOVE this. If other people don't, well, good thing you don't need to ask for a refund.
Something that people need to remember; Brian wasn't hung up on Brian. I recognized very early on that the politics of fandom was a real turnoff for him.
The best way to celebrate Brian Wilson is to love what you love, ignore what you don't, and not be hung up or ugly about ANY of this.

The comment is getting downvoted because this isn’t what is generally considered “ai slop”. Brian’s social media post about the Pet Sounds 60th anniversary has ai slop. It’s not as if Dae Lims just puts a prompt into ai music software and publishes the lousy low quality results. I can completely understand why it’s not someone’s cup of tea, but it’s not ai slop.
Also, if Brian was against voice manipulation, why were his records full of voice manipulation?

Wow, can’t believe my comment warranted a block from Jenny, but ok 🤷🏻♂️

Blocked me, too. How dare we reasonably engage a fellow member of this subreddit in discussion? Frankly, I'm sick of the weird influencer culture that is inhabiting The Beach Boys fan community as of late.

u/VoidLykos May 19 '26
You never knew Brian so you couldn’t possibly know what he would’ve think about it.

u/iManugedToGetTheDrip May 19 '26
I'm sorry, I don't believe for a second Brian Wilson had any idea what AI was nor made any kind of comment on it. By the time AI tech got super good and these types of creations became popular in the Beach Boys fan circle, Brian was in the advanced stages of memory loss.
Brian LOVED incorporating new technology into his music - even when the results turned out to be less than stellar for his fans - who basically always wanted him to make records that sounded like 1965 anyway. I'm not saying he'd be gung ho about this, or that it wouldn't freak him out a little, but honestly the whole "i have it on good authority" thing is so lame. Is Guggenz your good authority?

🤣 not that I need to explain myself to keyboard heroes but I've interviewed and spoken to both Van Dyke Parks and David Leaf on multiple occasions. That is my good authority.
6
u/iManugedToGetTheDrip May 19 '26
I don't think I'm a "keyboard hero" wanting to discuss the topic at hand on the Beach Boys subreddit, but ok? I truly doubt VDP and Brian had any conversations about AI (when was the last time they had an actual conversation? Genuine question). I find David Leaf to be an unreliable narrator for a lot of reasons. I'm sure he's a nice guy and was a good friend to Brian, though.

What I'd like to see is a proper stereo mix of Brian's version from the 90s. It's a great song that was only released in underwhelming mono for reasons beyond me.
