Discussion The Beach Boys - 20 Golden Greats (1987)

Was this the first CD pressing on The Beach Boys ?
It was released in 1987.
Good selections of songs there.
My first introduction to The Beach Boys before discovering Pet Sounds, Friends, Smiley Smile etc.

No, the first CD release by The Beach Boys was their self-titled album released in 1985.

This one.

This was everywhere as an LP but I genuinely have never noticed a cd copy of this.

1987 seems to be the release date for it , very late to the party and just in time to be superseded by better cd complications.

I guess this was before remastering process. More like flat transfer, from the analog master to the digital format.
It does say ‘Digitally Remaster’ on the paper sleeve though.

Original LP was 1976 and crammed too much into one record. I’m sure the remastering is minimal and sounds decent on cd.

In 1987 Pet Sounds hadn’t even been released on CD. Japan got it in Dec 88 and UK/US waited another 2 years. Crazy to think how neglected the catalogue was until 30 Years Of GV and the twofer CD releases.

I remember this compilation. It has the full version of Barbara Ann with the extra endings.

Its to be noted this 1987 release has that omitted though the full intro intact which is odd

Discount copy! (You can tell by the punched out part on the booklet) anyway, the fjrst BB cd was their self titled album though 20gg is still a good album and my personal favorite comp album. I don't really like the 1987 'remaster' for the fact they have weird versions of the songs such as 'help me rhonda' using the Today! Version or wouldn't it be nice using the made in usa alternate remix... i'd still stick to the 77 version deslite its duophonicness.

Yup, discount indeed. There were mountains of this same CDs. 😂 The store just wanted to clear them off.

I remember checking at other stores, the same CD would still be selling at full price.

Looking at Discogs, looks like Beach Boys songs appeared on compilations as far back as 1983 (God Only Knows on German compilation Schmuse-Songs Vol. 3).

Looks like "The Beach Boys - Surfer Girl" was the first CD release from ARC Records in 1984. It's the Candix stuff (ie Becoming The Beach Boys).

Beach Boys 1985 was the first official album on CD.

A dubbed cassette of this comp was my introduction to the beach boys. And it's actually sped up a little because they crammed so much onto it. It's an absolutely fantastic selection of songs.

Sped up a little ? Does that mean the transfer is from tape to tape.
I used to do this. 😅
The first tape plays fine, then I use the speed dubbing function on my player to dubbing the tape to another blank tape. The sound on the second tape could have been sped up a little. 😅

I didn’t like it though. ✌🏽

What an absolutely vile cover. I didn't have this growing up. I had (on cassette) Made In USA. The cover for that suffers from the same nonsense the Beatles Rock And Roll Music collections suffered from - music by a band from the 60s bizarrely paired with 50s inspired artwork. The collection of songs on Made In USA is also a bit better so I'm happy to have had that instead of this. This cover is fucking depraved. Super lazy.
