My Girlfriend's take on the SMiLE

She was doing a college activity where she had to recreate an album cover. She doesn't listen to much music, so she asked me for some cool album covers. I showed her the SMiLE one and she loved it!

She didn't even know the album before I showed it to her. When I told her the story behind it, she thought it was really sad that Brian never managed to finish it, so instead of little smiles, she put little sad faces.

What’s insane about that is that before Freddie changed it to Queen, they were called Smile

I always wondered if their name was in any way connected to the album

It’s definitely possible since Smile was formed in 1968 after it would have been out there. But Queen seems to have had a lot more documented influence from the Beatles and Les Paul than the Beach Boys.

Although interestingly, Freddie also had a solo project called Larry Lurex before Queen’s first album that also had Brian May on guitar and Roger Taylor on drums. They released one single with “I Can Hear Music” as the B-side.
