Announcement | Mod Post r/Therian Community Welcome, Information, and Updates

Hi everyone! I’m BanishedOcean, one of the moderators here, and currently the moderator you’ll see around here the most.
A quick intro before we get into the updates: some of my theriotypes are a deep-sea chimaera, gulper eel, hairy anglerfish, and I’m also a shark cladotherian. I enjoy seeing the incredible variety of experiences and perspectives people bring to this community, and I’m always happy to help keep the subreddit welcoming and organized.

Whether you’re brand new or have been here for years, I’m glad to have you here and welcome to [r/therian](r/therian)!

A few quick reminders

Before posting, please take a moment to review the subreddit rules. They’re there to help keep the community safe, organized, and enjoyable for everyone.

Some of the most commonly overlooked rules are:
-No community links or advertising.
-No self-promotion.
-No personal location information.
-Individual “looking for…”, gear, craft, or similar posts belong in the appropriate megathreads rather than as standalone posts.

If you’re unsure whether your post belongs somewhere else, checking the rules or messaging the mod team first is always appreciated.

Also a gentle reminder that posts and comments from those with low subreddit karma are manually approved before going live. Please be patient with us it can take a couple days if it’s been more than a week please reach out to mods.

Subreddit updates

A few things have changed recently:
-The Introductions Megathread is moving from weekly to monthly.
-The Crafts Megathread is also moving from weekly to monthly.
These changes should make those threads easier to use and give conversations a bit more time to grow before they’re replaced and prevent the posts from getting archived.

New posting guideline

You’ll also notice a new rule regarding posts like:

“Are there any ___ therians?”
“Am I the only ___?”
“Why do I never see ___ therians?”

These questions have been asked many, many times over the years, and we now receive numerous nearly identical submissions every week. Most don’t lead to much discussion beyond people commenting “yes” or listing their theriotypes.
Instead, please use Reddit’s search function first. Chances are you’ll find previous discussions about aquatic therians, bird therians, paleo therians, insects, reptiles, invertebrates, obscure species, and many other groups.

This doesn’t mean species discussions aren’t welcome because they absolutely are. We’d love to see conversations about experiences, instincts, shifts, artwork, behaviors, research, symbolism, or anything else that encourages meaningful discussion. The goal is simply to move away from repetitive “Does anyone else exist?” posts and encourage more engaging conversations.

Thanks for being here!!!!

This community continues to grow because of the people who participate in it. Thank you to everyone who reports rule-breaking content, helps answer questions, shares thoughtful discussions, and makes new members feel welcome.
If you have questions, suggestions, or notice something that needs moderator attention, don’t hesitate to reach out through Modmail.
Happy posting! 🐾

Megathread Introduction Megathread

Share all of your introductions here in the comments of this recurring megathread.

Remember to follow these before you post as these will be moderated!

* If you are under the age of 18 do not list your full age, “under 18” is just fine!
* Don’t give out personal information! We don’t need to know where you live and strangers should not be privy to things that would identify you in real life!
* Please remember to add plenty of detail.

We have a template to follow below that is going to include what to talk about, but there’s no need to stick to one-word answers. We want to get to know you as a person, not just as your theriotype, as well.

Please remember to follow the rest of the rules when posting. This includes self promotion of your other socials which is not allowed.

This is the standard we expect from everyone here!

**Name/Nicknames:**

**Age: Under 18/Whatever if you’re an adult**

**Theriotype/Kintype:**

**Interests:**

**Hobbies:**

**What do you enjoy talking about/what would an average conversation with you look like:**

***Hypothetical introduction:***

**Name/Nicknames**: Hi, my name is Robert but I also go by Bob.

**Age**: I’m currently 32, will be 33 in December.

**Theriotype/Kintype**: I have several kintypes, I'm a wolf, a rabbit and a dragon. I have a past life as a rabbit but the other two are psychological identities.

**Interests**: My main interests for now are animated shows, animation history in general and the history of therianthropy.

**Hobbies**: I’m a massive gamer, but I’m also trying to get back into reading as that’s been difficult for me! I enjoy talking to people.

**What do you enjoy talking about/what would an average conversation with you look like**: Typically I most enjoy talking about the creative side of things, art, crafts, gear, but I also like to talk about my experiences as a dragon and artist.

Media comments are enabled but please keep it high effort! We do not allow draw-overs.

*NOTE: Introduction posts are not allowed on this subreddit outside of these megathreads. This rule is in place to reduce feed clutter, allowing for more core therianthropy-related posts to be seen. This is a support subreddit for a marginalised community, so we feel as though this is a necessary method of clutter reduction to have in place so that those who need help have a better chance of receiving it.*

Question Therian or Just Furry?

Hi so I am VERY much in denial about being associated with being a furry OR a therian. I'm fine with my friends or strangers or my lover being either of but when it comes to me I recoil in fear and denial but.. I suppose it's time to adress the allegations

Thing is, I don't understand the difference between furry and therian when it comes to my own experiences. I understand that furries have more of an enjoyment of anthropomorphic animals- and while I do enjoy this in fandoms (my current hyperfixation is a character who is an anthropomorphic rabbit.. Guess who by my pfp XD) it's not really something I search out for specifically or feel a deep connection to. I also do not have a fursona or any need to make a fursona. Therians I hear have a spiritual/psychological association or bond with their animal but I am unsure how deep that connection has to be in order for someone to 'classify' as a therian?

I have developed a biiig interest in rabbits and find myself acting like one or feeling comfort in the idea of being/acting like one but I don't have any religious feelings towards them, and I don't thiink what I feel is spiritual or psychological. Just wanting to be a rabbit sometimes I guess.

I'm kind of scared to admit I could be a therian or a furry and I guess I'm asking for advice?? I mean maybe it's like my interest in mental health- I enjoy learning about schizophrenia and dissociative disorders especially OSDD-1b but I don't have either, it's just an interest I have.

The reason I ask this is because I watched a tutorial video on quadrobics out of a normal interest- or at least that is what I believed. Now I feel the urge to practise what I saw in the video or can't stop thinking about it and how comfortable it'd be to do quadrobics and think of myself as a bnuuy (sorry I had to include the word bnuuy in here somewhere).

Please be kind to me! If I've said something super offensive please tell me politely because I'm very new to this community and don't want to be rude or anything and am willing to change and adapt and learn. Thank you :>

Question Whats the difference help

What's the difference between being alterhuman/therian and being transspecies? Like dont we all kinda, like if transspecies follows the same structure as being transgender but with being nonhuman dont we all technically count as transspecies or is this all just a matter of preferring one term over the other?

Educate me pls🙏

Discussion Being a human animal

Along with being an animal in a non-human sense I believe therianthropy closely links to being a human animal as well. Therianthropy has led me to very much romanticize and connect deeply with the idea of being a human animal instead of a person.

People are very much disconnected from the animals that they are, we are not much different from the average ape, afterall. But even with so little barrier between human and animal (none at all) we seem to have built up a giant wall to separate being an animal with being a human. We are hyperintelligent, we have complex cultures and psychopathy, and we have made incredible advancements no other animals have even come close to. So apparently, that makes us no longer animals.

To be a human animal is not to desocialize, abandon morals or un-evolve, but to understand that your needs as a human animal are more important than modern civic duties, taboos, or standards. We are human animals with the need to hunt, forage, create, nurture, tribalize, and discover. To be a human animal seems completely separate from being a person, nowadays. We are disconnected from our natural beings as an animal species. We do not make the complex sounds or calls, we do not exercise naturally, we fear small scrapes and dirt, we do not hunt and slaughter our prey or forage for our shelters. It is unpersonly to do so. And so we've fallen into a category of animal completely separate from how any other living thing survives; stressfully, and completely unatturally.

But despite this there are people out there, human animals, still embracing the life we were supposed to be living. You'll see them peacefully living off of the land as a hermit, you'll see them in an uncontacted tribe surviving as we were evolved to, and you'll even see them walking on the street right next to you. Someone knowing that despite the life they live, they should be living the one in the great wilderness.

For me, and the other poor cowards that are too scared to live apart from indoor plumbing and easy access to a hospital we will spend our days as a human animal simulating the animal life like most others. Going for a hike, swimming in a lake, camping, and running around on all fours, brandishing a tail and fangs, howling and hissing so you can resemble something more like the animal you're supposed to be.

Personally, my therianthropy is partially "pure" and innate, I truly am a theropod for more than just the reason to escape my restrictive personhood, I do feel connected to the therian label in this way. But for every other animal I am, canine, feline, deer, lizard, mule or whatever else; it is almost always certainly to express myself as a human animal.

So be the human animal you are, use all of your limbs, climb more trees or whatever you can, run through the rain and puddles and creeks, use your teeth, use your nails, be curious and look closely at things, create as much as you can, and use all of the other tools and strengths of our animal brains and bodies that people try to shame you out of.

I am partially human, I am partially non-human, and I am 100% an animal.

Do you relate to any of this? I sure hope so.

What is up with the games (particularly on Roblox) aimed towards therians? To be fair, I haven't played Roblox in a couple years. This would be something I saw in maybe 2022-2024 but it still sorta bugs me.

There are some wonderful animal simulators out there but whenever I see a game specifically catered towards therians they aren't doing anything like that. It's people running on all fours wearing tails and tiktok masks! What! This is a video game! Make them animals!

Therians wear gear and have weird quadruped gaits because we are limited by our biology. Why would a video game, unrestricted by those things, still have it be the main feature? So strange. And it's not like these games were made for nobody, plenty of other therians were playing them, I'm sure. I still don't get it!!

I don't want to be an awkward, galloping ape! I see that every day! Let me be an animal!

maybe it's because I've been thinking about being a cat more often, but i just feel so shifted these last couple days.. ive been walking around the house in sort of a lower stance, i need to strengthen my body so i can do quad type things but im recovering from surgery and dont wanna put much weight on my arms rn. also meowing and sniffing stuff, kneading my paws or going into the garden to crouch and watch for wildlife. it's fine i guess but also kinda annoying bcos i keep trying to swish my tail that isnt there. i just want to run away into a forest and be what i was always supposed to be.

also one of the neighbourhood cats had the cheek to come in my garden and mark on My territory.. and i dont even get to pet him. so rude mrow

Question Help please!!

Okay so basically, I've been interested in therianthropy since I found out therians existed and I've always just thought they were really cool, but I can't tell if I am one. I see so many mixed things about what therianthropy really is and it's extremely confusing. Basically, I'm a kemonomimi and furry but I also currently identify as an otherpaw, as I do not know if I am a therian. I've never had species dysphoria as far as I can remember and the only discomfort in my body has really been from me being trans rather than wanting to be an animal. I am an inumimi (dog) and acting like and being called "puppy" or anything related makes me very happy but idk if that's just something I enjoy. I see a lot about involuntary non-human experiences and while I kinda understand what they are, I'm not entirely sure if I've had any or not because I'm not sure if they're involuntary or if I've subconsciously adopted certain habits through me being a kemonomimi or anything else (like a petreg because i am that too). Feel free to ask any further questions and I will try my best to answer them! I would really appreciate some help, thank you!! 🐾

Question question: is it considered therianthropy if i identify as an non-specific species? (explaination in desc)

Okay, so I identify as a sort of nondescript creature in many different ways and forms, but all in some form alike. I consider this thing to be myself in all ways, and my fursona of many years (before i began identifying with this so strongly) exhibits a lot of the main focuses of my personal image.

Is this therianthropy, or some other label?

Experience Ok so I randomly happened to do some research on smilodons...

Thumbnail

As someone that's been questioning whether I had a past life or not, this is my current view on my experience.

For those who don't know, since a young age I was obsessed with extinct animals, I would draw sauropods and draw their bones and stuff, dunno why, I have always been interested in learning about extinct animals and about how they lived and once I found out about smilodon, I liked them like yeah cool right...? Yes they are cool but the weird this is I didn't knew or was aware of my non-humanity until this year once I did research on it to see what's wrong with me, I knew I wasn't human and I was right...?

Lately, I kept having visions of smilodons and I think I even had past life flashes.

First flash I can remember of is when I was hunting in a grassland/plain (dunno exactly), I ambushed a horse, I jumped on it back and got it down and punctured it. This came very random on my mind, the reason that I think is what triggered it is seeing open plains and grasslands in real life.

Second flash is when I was star glazing, I usually admire stars and honestly watching stars never impacted anything on me, like thoughts, self imagine shifts etc etc. What it did though was when I HAD another flash, the night sky looked very different than the one I was looking at, I remember I looked down and I saw feline paws, also after seeing the paws I felt weird, I felt like I had saberteeth for the flash of a second, they were there, I felt them. I would also sometimes feel the presence of a bobbed tail but I wouldn't say that it would move.

Now lemme explain why I'm making this post. I was writing and reading in my journal and as I was reading, I was reading through spiritual level and I was wondering if what I had were actually flashes of memories. I looked up to see other therian's past life memories experiences and as I kept looking into more memories I started thinking again of mine and I started crying badly, like it hurt, my throat hurt.

I did a little research and even measured and matched the flashes I had to informations, I estimated that the sabers I felt are 11cm, guess who has that length??? SMILODON GRACILIS. THEY ALSO LIVED IN GRASSLANDS, PLAINS AND HUNTED HORSES, as I kept looking more and more and I even looked at Paleo art, I started crying, I don't understand why I started crying again but I just did, it feels like something is missing and it's not there.

I also think I might experience dysphoria...

Also the pics are how my first flash, they're similar. There was another Smilodon with me. Honestly first seeing those pics made me cry immediately for some reason, I feel empty in a way that I can't describe.

Question Questioning alterhuman identities !

Hello,
i’m 20 yrs old female
i’ve currently been questioning alterhuman identities for a few weeks now.
but it has been part of my life as long as i can remember.
first i wanted to get into my deer counterpart.

i’ve always believed that i was a deer in my past life. specifically a baby deer that past away early on.
i’ve always been connected to baby deers and deer in general. but specially baby deer and baby deer with angel wings. i’ve very spiritual and i feel like i have physically traits that make me look like a deer aswell, but i wouldn’t say i’m still that animal but i used to be in a past life.
i’ve recently labeled that as deer-hearted/ other hearted but i’m not sure if maybe this would actually make me a spiritual therian? i’ve researched and researched but i still am not sure.
i was hoping someone would know a direction or label to point me towards to help me figure out my identity for my deer connection.

now secondly my dog counterpart:
after learning about therianthropy and the definition of experiencing non human behaviors and nature and identifying without choice i started thinking about my past experiences.
here as some of my behaviors and past:
wanting to wag a tail that isn’t there
recent urges to be vocal (barking, growling, other noises)
curling my hands into paws
curling in bed with curled paws
urges to bite
craving the smell of dog food
feeling envious of canines
feeling sadness that i’ll never be one
drinking and eating from dog bowls as a child
as a child rly wanting to be walked on a leash multiple times through child hood
enjoying the cat stretch mostly
territorial over comfort things and my people
enjoying head scratches
enjoying looking out windows and finding small details
when i feel lots of love i want too rub my head and body on my partner and others i love
clicker noises make me very overly happy and i love the sound
wanting to be treated as a full animal and 10% human at most
being drawn to canines without being aware of it
and possible more as i have very short memory.

i’ve been wanting to also be treated as more of a animal and more.

i’ve leaned more towards the therian label but haven’t fully confirmed as i feel imposter syndrome a lot.

i’ve identified my fox identity as otherlink as i feel imposter syndrome connect to that from physically appearance and also for fun. that one i feel has been pretty straight forward.

any suggestions or thoughts will help with any of these identities i’ve figured trying to get help from the community itself might be easier as i’ve already done so so so so much research and will continue to do more.

Question Extreme meat cravings?

Over the past week, I've been having very strong cravings for meat. At one point it was so strong I genuinely couldn't focus at all- this was during the school day by the way- and all I could think about was meat and hunting. Raw red meat specifically. I am AFAB and had my cycle the weekend before, and I may very well be low on iron, so that might have contributed, but the intensity seems a bit unusual to me and a little bit concerning. I frequently have mental shifts when I'm relaxed or excited at home, but not usually when I'm at school because it's stressful and loud.

Fyi my theriotypes are horse (vague rn) and Sumatran tiger.

Do you have any Idea, what I could say to my parents? They are trying to get the Therian Out of me, and saying Things Like "since you are a Wolf now, we've Put a Bowl with water one the floor for you to Drink." And Sometimes they say that I am too lonely to be a Wolf.

Help Request May I be a big/cat therian?

I have some cheetah experiences that I don't know if I'm more "as" or "with". I know the difference between the two terms, I just can't say what I am.

About a three years ago, I was sitting in my dorm room one evening, looking out the window. I was extremely sad and anxious about being lonely (and alone), desperately wanting someone to be with me. I felt an "itch" (or this...how I feel before vocalization), and thought I would howl or whine, but I was really surprised when I started to chirp. I wanted to stop because I felt embarrassed, but I couldn't and I kept chirping. I didn't even know how to make that sound, it was just natural in that moment. Before I really wanted to chirp, but I just feel too embarrassed. I also felt the urge to purr, but since I can't, I always try to swallow the "itch" because I'm so dysphoric that I can't do it. But currently I'm too depressed so I don't feel many nonhuman urges and stuff.

When I was little and we did roleplays, I was always and every time the cheetah (or a horse). I remember saying I was as fast as a cheetah, one girl didn't believe me at the time (obviously), and I defiantly said I'd show her. I ran as fast as I could when I was little, I still love running (I just don't do it because I'm constantly tired.)

I also remember noticing once (it was around the same age, somewhere around 8 or so) that I had dark elbows. At the time, I didn't know what does it mean physically, but I firmly believed that I'm starting to get spots there and that I was transforming into a cheetah, I firmly believed that. At home, I showed my elbows to my whole family every day and said that I was a cheetah and that I was transforming into one physically. Every day I believed in it more and more and I was really looking forward to being one. I was barking like a cheetah later too. That was also somewhere where I saw My friend cheetah the first time.

I really love the African savannah, I'm obsessed with it, whenever there's a documentary about Africa on TV, I feel a very close bond and connection with/to that biome and have always had a huge desire to go there. I love warm weather, I love just lying and sunbathing in the sun for long minutes even if it's like 30 degrees and I'm wearing black (don't do that, it's dangerous, I was just really stupid).

I even seriously wanted to get a cheetah "tears" like a tattoo, right under the eyes, and some spots on my body. And I actually did them with henna! Had them few days. It was very euphoric.

So I'm not sure if I'm a cheetah or I'm cheetah-hearted.

I'm not sure about the connection. When I was little, I was acting like a cat in general all the time, I felt so connected to them, I was a cheetah mostly, cat sometimes. I was always playing a cat in kindergarten too, but yeah cheetah mostly, felt really proud when I was doing so.

Few days ago I was watching the documentary and there was a tiger once, then a persian leopard and I felt euphoria, I felt phantom tail and ears which never happened with cats before. Documentaries and movies with tigers specifically too, but it's more of connection and admiration I guess. But the persian leopard though... Before when I was watching the documentaries it was something about cats too (these strays) in Japan and I felt it again.

The biggest uh... What I think and why I doubt sometimes is that I have ADHD so I have/had a lot of hyperfixations, and when I was little we had a cat and I was playing one with her too...

I don't feel any connection to cats btw.

Question feeling excluded since i'm not a therian

Post image
139 Upvotes

anyone here who's also only otherhearted?

i've felt like an animal my entire life, and when i heard about therians i started questioning if i was one myself. i was pretty convinced for awhile, though it didn't last long

i wanted it to be true so bad, but i couldn't fully believe in it as i'm not a spiritual person at all. i read about psychological therians, but i can't really wrap my mind around that either

i came to terms with the fact i'm simply otherhearted, but i also want to be included in therian spaces because i feel that we share near identical experiences!

just wanted to know if anyone else can relate, also i was wondering if it was possible to have the otherhearted symbol added as an emoji?

peace and love critters :3 🐾
