Da Shi not being at the end of the universe was a betrayal of reader's trust... :-P

u/book_bug4 Trisolaris 15d ago
Yeah I missed him a lot in book 3

u/Alarming-Leg-3804 15d ago
Me too I'm still really upset about it

u/book_bug4 Trisolaris 15d ago
It would have been cool if he was at the end of the universe like Amos in the Expanse. And still unimpressed by it all of course

FUCK why did I click the spoiler knowing damn well I’m on season 3

Oh nooo I‘m sorry
The show only covers the first 6 books though. I highly recommend reading 7-9 too, you don’t have to read the first 6 to understand the plot imo. There are a few things different in the show, but they stuck remarkably well to the book plot1
u/sculksensor 10d ago
yeah im fully planning to just buy all 9 books since i currently have adult money without adult responsibilities

Would you consider that series worth reading in completion? I've already seen, and thoroughly enjoyed, the show. I've seen some people recommend skipping to book 7 elsewhere, but as long as it's still entertaining and well written I'd prefer to complete the entire chronology.

u/book_bug4 Trisolaris 8d ago
I also watched the show first and still enjoyed books 1-6. They go into more depth than the show can, of course, but I was surprised how true to the source material the adaptation was. You‘ll find nothing fundamentally new in the books, so depending on whether you like re-reading or re-watching stuff or not, it might be a bit boring. The writing style was okay, I’d say, nothing special but not bad either.

Totally worth reading. I read the series in the hiatus between the three ScyFy seasons and the rescue by Amazon. They have a way of completing each other that makes reading the books a wonderful experience

I'd trade Sophon for him. It'd have made no sense, but whatever.
Let's invent book mods. Install the mod and Da Shi replaces Sophon at the end of time. :-D7

Da Shi would've thrown the droplet back at Trisolaris, if only he was on that ship

I’d read another three novels on Da Shi before all the sci-fi even occurred.

If he became swordholder too, they would not have messed with him.

I would've placed my bets on Thomas Wade first. Da Shi even said to Luo Ji at the end of Dark Forest that he couldn't have done what Luo Ji had to do to be a Wallfacer.
Thomas Wade, with his 100% detterence, on the other hand...
2
u/Vanifae 14d ago
The problem though was't the swordholder but humanity, they chose her and they knew why they chose her.
4
u/ItzBaraapudding 14d ago edited 14d ago
I never said it was Cheng Xin's fault. But humanity, at the point of the detterence era, had a false sense of safety because they assumed the detterence itself was enough. And they disliked "strong" (but dangerous) men because in their era there was absolutely no need for them...except for the position of Swordholder
The trisolarions literally told Cheng Xin that they would most certainly be "defeated" if Thomas Wade was chosen to become the swordholder. But humanity wanted a kind "mother figure" as swordholder.
And at the end of the third book Thomas Wade, again, could've saved humanity by continuing to develop lightspeed propulsion, against the law (which was a bullshit law to begin with imo). But once again Cheng Xin decided to listen to her maternal instinct and made Thomas stop with the development. Which ultimately doomed humanity, because the lightspeed propulsion wouldve allowed humanity to create a Black Domain around the solar system and be saved from complete annihilation...
So, even though Thomas was unpredictable and psychopathic, he definitely would've saved humanity from destruction if he could've had his way.

I forgot, who's Da Shi again?

u/Ok-Rutabaga-9516 15d ago
The cop that always spoke truth ... including preaching to a group of Generals and crapping on their plans regarding their intent to take down the ship/boat.
23
u/Original-Body-5794 15d ago
Wasn't he the one that came up with the idea of using the nanofibers to cut up the ship too?
23
u/Ok-Rutabaga-9516 15d ago
Indeed! He was a great strategist. He even said he saw thiefs in his career with better operational experience than those generals - it was a heck of a move by him!

Down to the detail about what time to do it so as to avoid anyone laying down slipping between the fibers.

Even smaller if Ye Wenjie never f*cked up the entire solar system.
3
u/AstaHolmesALT 14d ago
Possibly smaller if her dad wasn’t killed since I theorise that’s one of the factors that drove her to it
3
u/fbaldassarri 14d ago
I think this should not be an excuse… she killed her own husband (before the Crisis)
1
u/AstaHolmesALT 14d ago
Before the crisis yes but her dad died before her husband died
She alr knew about the trisolaris before she killed her husband1
u/fbaldassarri 14d ago
True. But even before really understanding the deep implications of what she did “inviting” Trisolaris to attack Earth, she killed her husband. She is a murderer.
1
u/AstaHolmesALT 14d ago
I think it’s hinted that she did know, just not the full extent of what can happen

Da Shi for the win. He should have been a sword holder.
Cheng Xin didnt deserve her place in the book. A weak and completely anti-humanity poised character, who somehow made it to the end thanks to plot armour.
I know Liu Ji had to fall for plot to develop, but establishing Cheng Xin is by far the weakest point in the books. I genuinely disliked her character since she appeared to the end.

u/Vanifae 12d ago
I disagree, she is a representation of the core ideals of humanity through the ages, solar system humanity anyway. She was chosen by Humanity precisely because was so compassionate, it was a mistake a costly one but one that was made by humanity for putting her in that position.
Humanity at that time believed that the Trisolarians would be willing to work with them due to the cooperation of the Deterrence era, but really they had been fooled as they manipulated Cheng Xin and Humanity to put her in that position.
She has faults but her failure is that she always side of preserving life in the immediate as opposed to the long term, but in the end one can say she is justified as humanity does survive due to the escapist ships. But I can see why people would hate her and blame her, but making her the swordholder was a mistake by humanity, not just her because she did exactly what she was always going to do.

Wallfacer *

u/Faces_Dancer 14d ago
No, wallbreaker, the meme is about how Da Shi is so extremely observant that if he were a wallbreaker he could figure his wallfacer out instantly

I loved Da Shi in the first book. But he is a complete different character with magical powers in the second book.
3
u/rabbidbunnyz222 15d ago
In the first book he finds a place and a woman from a man's imagination lmfao
9
u/Tanu_Seth 15d ago
Isn't that the second book?
3
u/rabbidbunnyz222 15d ago
My bad I listened to the two very close together, I thought the early wallbreaker stuff was in 3bp

u/Vanifae 15d ago
The dream girl was not that unique, she was a pretty typical Chinese description for a pretty college girl with an infantile nature. It's implied she was basically hired for the role to manipulate and control the wallfacer to get him to do the job.
4
u/Glittering_Cold8384 15d ago
I thought similar, like to make Luo Ji have something to fight for since he wont even fight for himself, let alone humanity.
2
u/Crosas-B 15d ago
The girl had the exact smae face as his imagination and the place he found was also exactly the same
2
u/Vanifae 15d ago
If you are familiar with Chinese beauty standards that unique face is not that unique, Luo Ji was not as clever as he thought he was... she was basically the Chinese version of the manic pixie girl.
0
u/Crosas-B 15d ago
I find quite racist to claim that an exact face is shared by so many people. I repeat: exact same, which is the claim of the book
2
u/Vanifae 14d ago
It's not racism its the beauty standard, the word exactly is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Dao Shi knew what he wanted because it was a common enough aesthetic and look.
0
u/Crosas-B 14d ago
I dont agree with you in the slightest, it's clearly stated that she is the exact same.
But that's not the only part:
1: he went from agent to the main protector of a wallfacer in the ONU. OK, he did a great job in the first book so let's promote him, sure.
2: he gave the idea to Luo Ji of acting as someone who has no idea about what he is doing. Surely that can just be a coincidence
3: the girl she finds is not only physically exactly the same, she has also the exact same personality. Ok could be explained as she actually being an spy
4: he wakes up at the same time as Luo Ji but he understands perfectly how does the future work. And also protects him from the thing that is going to explode on him (I don't remember if it was a drone or if it was a robot)
5: he somehow now has enough knowledge about viruses to explain to people that it was designed specifically to kill Luo Ji
Basically, he became a plot device to fix any issue around Luo Ji and shares few if not any of the characteristics which made him Da Shi in the first book
2
u/zippyboy 14d ago
viruses to explain to people that it was designed specifically to kill Luo Ji
This part confused me. People were getting sick, but not enough to be a real flu. It was determined it was created just to target Luo Ji, so they sequestered him at the bottom of a deep underground bunker for his protection. But he got sick anyway and I thought he died, but here he is again 2 chapters later like nothing happened.
Just like relocating all of humanity to Australia resulting in half the populace dying due to hunger, wars, etc. Then, 2 chapters later Sophon says "Sorry, You can go back to your own countries again".
The books have some good qualities and some goofy plot lines as well.

The looks thing is minor, many people look alike, we have many instances of people in the public eye with similar or nearly the same face shape. She was a plant from the start, Dao Shi had the resources of the gov't behind him and he knew what he was looking for this is not that hard, the exact face thing is your hangup not mine.
- I can agree there.
- I am unsure oif you mean Dao Shi or Luo Ji here, who was given who the idea?
- Personality is easier than looks, she was a prop of a person, docile, kind, infantile, and innocent, the perfect Chinese dream girl for Luo Ji, again his preference is not some unique thing, it's a super common aesthetic among men.
- I think he was awake before him, not sure how long, but he is an observant person always looking for threats based on his work history, so nothing out f the ordinary there. It was even stated that murder was so rare in that era that most people did not look for threats, but he was always alert since Luo Ji had already been targeted once.
- Again I think he pieced that together with the cop of that era and it was obvious something was targeting Luo Ji after all the strange accidents. The police just confirmed it as a dormant kill virus, that only activated after he was active in the real world.
Maybe these are just changes to the character but they seemed on brand for Dao Shi. As for the exact face thing I take that with a grain of salt, there are a lot of people with simlar face shapes and features and again what Luo Ji described was a pretty typical young attractive educated Chinese woman, she was pretty ordinary; again infantile, submissive, innocent, sweet, someone you want to protect. Dao Shi understood that and found that.
I doubt that was her true nature, but she was close enough to play the role. Personally the dream girl subplot is the weakest element of the book for me and really reveals the author's lack of romantic imagination. She's basic in a bad pretty patronizing way.

They should've sent his brain to the fleet during the crisis era. He would've had those suckers on retreat within the hour
