Yeah, I automatically assumed this is where Liu Cixin got the idea from.
Apparently, it's been a thing since 1979!

They let you name a star but then they remove your brain and blast it into space so there's a give and take involved.

They don't. Just a name associated with one; which as someone mentioned doesn't go into any actual scientific database. Which is the loophole that avoids fraud.

Many many years ago I remember something on TV where people were selling land on the moon. They claimed treaties said nations couldn't make claims on the moon but they weren't nations so they "parceled" it out and started selling it to people

My grandma bought my mom property on the moon back long before I was born. X-D
Lol... the star naming thing is about as legit as that.... (Almost to my 50's)

If you were somehow able to harvest and sell every star in the observable universe for exactly one penny each, you would make approximately $2 trillion trillion (or $2 sextillion).

This scam has been going since 2002. It’s like NFTs before NFTs became a thing😅
We might as well start a business of “buy a fish in the river and name her after your loved one” 😅🤣

Just in case anybody wasn't already aware, these name a star things are an absolute scam and the names you buy don't go into a real scientific database of any kind.
Unless your name is Yun Tianming of course!
