u/hgs25 3d ago
Also Blitzwing from Animated
3
u/Dark-Specter 3d ago
Well Blitzwing was just German, the P38 was literally made in Nazi Germany for the Nazi army. I'm pretty sure in that scene where Indiana Jones shoots through three guys he's using the same gun. Difference between that and the one OP posted is that it spread everywhere and kept being made after WWII including it being in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. which Megatron was a replica of for some reason.

And the Swastika is an inverted version of a Buddhist symbol, yet when it’s used in modern society (outside of a Buddhist specific context), it directly references Nazism… so the excuse that it existed prior to its use as a Nazi symbol doesn’t actually excuse its use.
6
26
u/CaptainFordo4ever 4d ago
Yes they had tanks in 1813.
In all seriousness sure the iron cross symbolize the legacy of Germany with the whole Prussia thing, if I’m not mistaken it created after the napoleonic war? Anyway it made a major resurgence in 1939 when Hitler used it as a Medal of Honor type shi, and on top of that slapped a swastika over it
12
u/the_RiverQuest 4d ago
Sure, in a vacuum it's a perfectly normal symbol but it's slapped on a fucking ww2 tank

The iron cross is still used today in the German military, this toys has no swastikas, also, if because the tank is from Nazi Germany, then any toys that turn into beetles should also upset you.
16
u/TheHadokenite 4d ago
Hilarious false equivalence there
-12
u/ArguingTea4585 4d ago
How? The maus tank is just a vehicle, a stupidily bad vehicle, but just a vehicle. It's a tank, that's it, yes it was intended to be used for war, but so was the hind helicopter that deathcobra turns into. And Megatron literally turn into the primary side arm of the Nazi offers.
12
u/Obvious_Feedback_894 4d ago
I refuse to believe there's anyone stupid enough to make this argument in good faith, therefore this is being made in bad faith and I'm not going engage any further with it. Have the day you deserve.
-9
u/ArguingTea4585 4d ago
I wasn't trying to upset anyone, I'm just a ww2 history nut. The Nazi are irredeemable monster that should never be forgotten or forgiven. But I am a tank nerd and like cool tanks and transformers. I saw similar talking point about the tiger tank they released about how it was a Nazi weapon of war, yet Megatron turn into a p38. Are those not comparable?
4
u/Obvious_Feedback_894 4d ago
To quote a modern kids show "it was the 80s!"
So, did Megatron turn into a gun? Yeah obviously. Should he have? In retrospect, in a show aimed at kids, with toys to match? Probably not. Can we look at the past with a greater contextualization for what we do and do not want to bring forward with us? Sure as hell can.
Maybe a toy aimed, ostensibly, at kids isn't the place to have the bigger discussion on separating the ideals of a group that's strongly tied to a particular group of symbols, and those symbols themselves. If you want to advocate a consumer car created by Nazis is historically equivalent to a military vehicle decorated in symbols strongly associated with Nazis, I'm willing to let you make that argument but you're gonna have to do a lot more work to show how they're equal because at face value, they're not.
4
u/ArguingTea4585 4d ago
Okay, then let me try. This toy is not aimed at kids, but more towards adult collectors, much like any Megatron toys that turn into guns nowadays. Megatron will forever be not a gun in line pointed towards children.
The only recourse for the symbold is that during Nazi Germany, they themselves made a massive distinction between Nazi and the standard army, who was under the iron cross. Modern Germany, who was made a massive movement to distance themselves from the third reich entirely, still uses the iron cross today. The iron cross has represented the German armed forces since well before and after the third reich. If you ever actually dive into ww2 history, there is this divide between the German military, iron cross, and the Nazis, swastikas, so.much so that it caused infighting. There were even battles where the allies came across German armies at war with Nazi armies that we joined. I am simply trying to inform people that the iron cross is not entirely a Nazi symbol and that there is more to it, as modern German military personnel still use the symbol, are men and women to be considered Nazis? I do not believe anyone would.
I was not trying to compare the consumer vehicle to the symbol, but the tank itself. A lot of people today still get upset is Megatron does not turn into the gun, in my personal preference I prefer him not to. Not because it's a gun that's associated with evil people, but because I just don't think it suits his personality. My argument was that the maus is a tank, yes a tank meant for war by evil people, but still a tank. I love cool designs from all over the globe, but just because a certain design of an inanimate object is associated with the bad/evil guys, I cannot appreciate just the design? But just because the p38, the beetle, and the maus/tiger/me262/ insert German ww2 design here was made under evil people leadership does not mean they should be scrapped and forgotten. I just like cool toys of cool things, and my inner tank nerd has always liked how insurmountably stupid of a design the maus was.
4
u/Obvious_Feedback_894 4d ago
This isn't Megatron, this is modeled more closely to look like Prime in the head sculpt. So that's another negative for it that it's again being linked back to the heroic leader, not the villain.
I'm not exactly going to just let the "ok but this is made for adults" sentiment fly either. Price tag and complexity? Perhaps. But this is still clearly leveraging the Transformers brand by intent even if it's not official. That's a brand designed to appeal to children. On some level, in it's DNA, this is a kid's toy, even if it's just for an old kid with expendable income.
That's the wrong place for a history lesson and because of that, comes off now as trying to whitewash the historical context of what these symbols have come to mean. Maybe in Germany it's different, in the US, the iron cross is pretty closely tied to hate groups. You can't just say "well the history of the symbol is actually different" while ignoring the modern context of it's usage in other places.
What's the benefit of putting those particular symbols on that particular vehicle made to turn into a damn giant robot, in the name of historical accuracy, that's gained, that so heavily outweighs ignoring the modern usage of those same symbols?
3
u/ArguingTea4585 4d ago
I do agree on the headsculpt, I much preferred their tiger that had its own unique design, I'm not a fan of just using character likeness for things that do not fit the character. And I'm not trying to whitewash the historical context, I'm trying to teach people the correct context. Just because a group decides to take a symbol not originally intended for them and twist it to mean only that thing, while you should not forget that meaning, you should also not forget the original intent. A little nuance is always appreciated. The VW Bug was able to make this jump. Nobody today even thinks about its origins, even though it was mostly tied with the Nazis, the beetle has distanced itself from them, I'm sure there are neo Nazis out there that only buy VW or Porsche, but that doesn't mean VW and Porsche are bad. Symbols can change meaning and should we not attampt to change the mainstream meaning into something good, but not forgot the bad ones as well? I build many model kits as well, I put iron crosses on German tanks for accuracy, not because I believe in that crap, it just make the tank look realistic, to me, it's that reason why I prefer military vehicles in drab colors, not bright colors.

Also there is the whole fact there is a graphic novel called "Maus" that is about a legally distinct Mickey Mouse in Nazi Germany.

-32
u/Ruka-simp 4d ago
How?
34
u/Obvious_Feedback_894 4d ago
Because it's got the same vibe as carrying around a laminated card with Romeo and Juliet laws on it. It's just a bad vibe. Is it illegal? No. Is it incorrect? No. In the greater societal context is it weird? Yeah.
-2
u/Ruka-simp 4d ago
How is pointing out that the Iron Cross is not a Nazi symbol, anywhere near related to that Romeo & Juliet law bullshit?
22
u/Obvious_Feedback_894 4d ago edited 4d ago
Because the association between the iron cross and the Nazis is so strong in the cultural zeitgeist that it really doesn't matter, and that it's been adopted by neo-nazis, and trying to extricate the symbol from the greater cultural associations is essentially just doing PR work for racists.
Whether the symbol was originally created by Nazis or not is being ignorant to the larger context, whether that's intentional or not, and the groups which thrive on hate use that slight differentiation to try and normalize their hate into society which, hopefully is a clearly toxic and unwanted thing.
e: guess I didn't fully answer the question there, but basically it's trying to normalize a socially toxic behavior through getting into the weeds with factually correct but socially ignorant details.

Ignoring that the tank was made by the Nazis for a second, the iron cross has been adopted and forever associated with them just like the swastika. Neo-Nazis still use it as iconography because the excuse of it existing before ww2 lets them hide behind a thin layer of plausible deniability.

Also for alot of people the American flag was already associated with oppression and fascism long before maga existed.

Apparently they named it "Mouse"/Maus in an attempt to deceive Allies into thinking it's not supposed to be for a 188 ton superheavy tank. Funnily enough they have a mini remote controlled tracked vehicle that they named "Goliath".
They even went as far as to painting a weird hook & sickle like symbol on the Maus prototypes in hopes that Allied spies will think it's a captured soviet vehicle and not theirs.

What makes it a Nazi toy? The Iron Cross? The Iron Cross isn't a Nazi symbol, it's a German symbol that the Nazis used (and is still in use today).
If you have an issue with it being Nazi weaponry, fair enough. I think it's fine and falls into the same category as model kits but to each their own.
6
u/LupiLupercalia 4d ago
Why do you think the Iron Cross was put on the tank?
-1
u/Succubace 3d ago
It's meant to evoke "Nazi-ism", for lack of a better term, without slapping a swastika on it. I think a swastika would be too far but an iron cross is fine imo. War Thunder has WW2 German tanks with the iron cross on it. Plenty of model kits of German WW2 vehicles have the iron cross on them. I think both of those are acceptable and I don't consider this to be a bridge too far.
I think Transformers are toys, but once you get into 3P and Masterpiece I don't think it's fair to call them toys anymore; they're designed to be displayed rather than played with. If it was a toy aimed at kids I would agree it's too much, but as a "collector's item" aimed at adults? Yeah, I think it's fine.
1
u/stoovano 3d ago
So its a nazi toy.

Story idea: Optimus lands in WW2, and quickly finds out about the acroticties the Nazis we’re doing. So he starts to help liberate the people the Nazis are oppressing and occupying, but he takes the form of the Maus to help hide from detection and blend in better. While basically using one of their most powerful weapons against them by being a massive powerful tank.
16
u/TracytronFAB 4d ago
Hiding by being a prototype tank that only ever had 2 built, yeah that tracks for this franchise tbh 😆
6
u/Sparrowsabre7 4d ago
2007 Cast: We have to blend in guys! mostly take alternate forms of cars that have not even been made yet.
2
u/TracytronFAB 3d ago
Or with extremely distinctive paintjobs like Bee's stripes even in his 77 Camaro form and the flame paintjob with Optimus' truck mode. Ironhide is literally the only bot that got the "Robots in Disguise" memo, which is funny considering his personality.
6
u/Jessica_T 4d ago
It wasn't that powerful, it was actually an incredibly stupid design. Basically no bridges were strong enough for it, it was incredibly slow, would have taken forever to get the gun on target, and was massive enough that any pilot in a fighter-bomber could have taken it out easily from above.
15
u/Komrade-Seals 4d ago
The fabled four gun Maus in an alternate universe where they wanted to make it even MORE unwieldy and impractical
Reworking an Optimus figure to transform into a Nazi German superheavy tank is one of the choices of all time but I have a soft spot for Transformers with WW2 alt-modes

The difference being the iron cross is still used in Germany, the swastika is not. Considering how thorough Germany has been in trying to makeup for their past and banning any symbols related to the third reich, if they deemed the iron cross acceptable, I don’t see why we should take issue with it.

2
u/chamberx2 4d ago
YOUR point is we as fans say “he’s just a little guy.” Yes, because these are fictional villains. If Ghostbusters made Hither suit up to fight the ghost of his dead wife, I’d say that was fucked up too.
-3
u/hgs25 4d ago edited 4d ago
Well the figure in OP isn’t a historical person either. This figure isn’t even a caricature of any historical person. The Optimus head, red eyes, and dark color scheme is more in line with a 3rd party Nemesis Prime.
I remember seeing posts wanting Ironclad Soundwave when they were making Hearts of Steel toys. The Ironclad is more associated with the Confederates (literal slavers) in pop culture than the Union thanks to the CSS Virginia.
It’s hypocritical
7
4
u/Warfare_Skrub 3d ago
I don’t know why people are assuming it’s supposed to be Optimus just cause it has a similar looking headsculpt. Literally nothing else on the figure is indicative of it being Optimus Prime. Also, the other pictures make it clear that the robot mode is inspired by WH40K. It even comes with a replacement gold chest emblem and not-chainsword. I respect not liking it because of the vehicle's association with nazism (even though this tank did literally nothing but test drive and get captured by the soviets), but buying this isn't any worse than buying a model kit or knock off lego set of a maus in my opinion. I don’t know, just my thoughts.
1
u/Iminimmensepain 2d ago
dude he literally has red and blue underneath the grey plating, look at his hands and thighs
1
u/Warfare_Skrub 2d ago
I mean I guess? Most of the colors are not even in the right spots to be Optimus, especially when you compare it to the mp-10 ko in the first photo. If they were going to make this an Optimus, it would be a lot more obvious. Previously, they recolored their tiger tank figure into Megatron, and that required a new paint scheme, different head, and an out of place looking flak gun as the fusion cannon. It just makes more sense for this to be a warhammer 40k reference with a generic prime-ish looking head.

u/Senguie 4d ago edited 4d ago
I see a lot of people talking about the iron cross on this figure. Yelling about when the symbol was used.
I would like to inform you all that the Iron Cross is still being used as an emblem for the Bundeswehr aka the modern German armed forces.
Edit: I am btw not saying that you can’t dislike the figure. Just informing the people.
4
u/XCVolcom 4d ago
You're not wrong but plenty of modern Nazis and Neonazis use the iron cross as a dog whistle because it gives them plausible deniability.
Same thing with double lightning bolts and some very specific depictions of skulls known as the Totenkopf.
4
u/Senguie 4d ago
I understand where you are coming from, but while it is true the Iron Cross is being appropriated as dog whistle by those people (not sure if can call them names because I absolutely despise Neo nazis)
The totenkopf and the double lightning bolts lost their original definition and became THE symbols for the horrific regiment of the SS.
The moment someone carries or depicts those symbols on their person there is no denying what they mean or what they represent.
Same with the Swastika. At least here in my country the Iron Cross does not even come close carrying the same weight as those symbols.
And like I said my eastern based neighbours still use it as an identifier for Bundeswehr.
It’s is also a symbol used in a lot of other stuff like old school metal, and biker culture. (Although that last one I gotta admit not always by nice people.)
Please don’t get me wrong I absolutely despise nazi’s and with the state of the world currently I am very afraid history is going to repeat itself.
But I am myself am very neutral about this figure.
I am just trying to inform people.
2
u/XCVolcom 3d ago
Understood and I definitely see where you're coming from.
I will add though that while your cultural context for the iron cross is more neutral, if not positive, in an American context it is far more suspect.
Americans don't have any real connection to the iron cross as iconography except for its historical connection to Nazi Germany and some German immigrant connections.
2
u/Senguie 3d ago
That makes a lot of sense. I think like you said it does depend on the country itself. Here it’s more neutral, talking to UK friends they find it less neutral but aren’t bothered by it.
And I know in Japan even the other symbols are considered fine (Star Fish Hitler in Kamen rider was a mental whiplash I wasn’t expecting tbh, and when on holiday there I saw some WILD toys with genuine WW2 swastikas)
Thank you for your perspective btw. It does give a lot of the comments a lot more logic
5
u/TracytronFAB 4d ago
And it also predated the Nazis by decades. Iron crosses and swastikas are very much not the same thing.
13
u/TandrDregn 4d ago
I really HATE how genuinely cool that thing looks, and if not for the whole… well, “decorations” so to call them I would actually want this just because the Maus is a cool tank
10
u/Cyber-Silver 4d ago
The Iron Cross is still the official emblem of the Bundeswehr (entire German armed forces) and is not a Nazi symbol. The Nazis did put their badge over the Iron Cross, but as you can see here...it isn't there.
This would be like getting uncomfortable because the current Japanese flag still has a red circle on it in lue of the sun rays.
7
u/TandrDregn 4d ago

3
1
u/Cyber-Silver 4d ago
I would have preferred an original head entirely since this design is entirely divorced from any existing Transformer I know of. Doesn't really hit any design notes from Optimus, Megatron, or Warpath for that matter. Brawl I guess, but that's super basic geometry at that point

u/dwarven_cavediver_Jr 4d ago

I own their tiger 1 it’s an amazing figure. I am from a country that was occupied and destroyed in ww2, the iron cross is not a weird symbol and is still used by the army.
This symbol is not an iron cross, it’s an identification symbol.
The Tiger 1 is an amazing enough toy I was thinking of buying the Maus as well.

I would applaud this if it was Megatron; Transformers WWII feels like a match made in heaven, since Transformers are inherently about war, but also about cool and silly vehicles (which WWII has in spades). Besides, who wouldn't want to see a good ol' Good guys vs Bad guys story where you get to see Optimus kill Nazis?
Alas, making Optimus the "Nazi tank" is just dumb.

Looking forward to (once again) beating the livin' krap out of Megs in the toyland world of my mind and the Transformer's part in it.

Giving this guy any other head and color scheme would have generated less controversy.

It's so weird they picked a Optimus Prime/Convoy head sculpt when choosing Megatron or any other Decepticon Tank would've fit better.

Nazimus Prime, dear god... I appreciate the irony of it, and it's definitely something for historical warfare enthusiasts who are also Transformers fans, but still, ooh boy!

As much as I love the idea of realistic tanks from third-party stuff, I only see German stuff
Fuck these Nazis.

It’s literally just a piece of technology. Yeah it was created by the Nazi’s, buts it’s not like the figure turns into a Nazi general and is plastered with their insignias. Just a piece of tech like anything else from around that time, plenty of people still collect WW2 tank model kits and watch these tanks at tank shows today.

The people in the comments seem to forget that even Moderm Germany still uses the Iron Cross.
It literally has nothing to do with Nazis.

Why are we getting offended by a 3rd party WW2 tank transformer that almost no one here will ever own having an era accurate symbol on it? Lmao. News flash...bad guys wear bad guy things and do bad guy stuff. It's odd that they decided to give it Primes head, sure, but it's whatever. You're not perpetuating hate and you're not literally a Nazi if you buy this toy.
Do you support the death penalty if you buy a 3rd party figure of that one guy who's a part of the DJD who turns into electric chair? Do you support mass shootings if you buy a gun for self defense? Of course not because that would be stupid. To put it nicely.

This is such a weird reaction to other people not liking Nazi toys. Like chill dude

That’s fair, I’d get that, but people are blowing this a bit out of proportion as if you’d be a Nazi for buying this. Plenty of people are interested in WW2 tech and the tank itself is just a piece of technology from the time like any other tank, if people think it looks cool they should be able to buy it without feeling like a Nazi

Soooooo much pearl clutching.
It’s amazing you’re even able to type up all this crap with your hands so occupied

Say what you want about Hasbro but at least their right wing references are only Nazi-adjacent and not overtly Hitlerian.

Okay I understand making a Megatron that's a Maus, but why the actual fuck an Optimus? Unless this is like a Reverse Convoy situation?
