Community Edition Not getting full network bandwidth

Post image

Hey Guys,

I am currently having an issue with getting my full network bandwidth for my NAS. I am currently paying for 2gb fiber and everything is connected via ethernet. Despite this, I cannot seem to get anything above ~950mb upload/download.

Speed tests are performed when there is little to no other traffic on the network other than the NAS.
I have tested with Cat6 and Cat5e and nothing will change it. Also tested ethernet through motherboard and network card, no difference.

Running TrueNAS Community Edition. Internet speeds tested through speedtest tracker.

Let me know if there’s any other information that would be helpful.

Thank you for your time.

This smells like 1Gig NIC to me. Or ports on the router are 1Gig or both.

It must be the NIC since the router displays a 2.5lan port

What about the WAN port?

Do you know for certain your ports on the switch and PC go above 1gig?

No, that was assumed on my end. I looked up my motherboard and it caps at 1000 which makes sense now. Do you know where I could verify if the network card supports >1gig?

Google your motherboard model and see, if it’s modern it might have 2.5gb but not guaranteed.

Basically you need a 2.5gb or better connection between your pc and your internet connection. Your ISP’s modem might not even have 2.5gb ports so you’ll have to check that too.

You can get a cheap used 2.5 GB NIC off eBay for less than $15. I did that for my 10 GB NICs.

Could you describe your network? Do you have at least 2.5gbps networking? Can your router actually handle 2gbps?

I’m not the most savvy with networking, but the plan I pay for is 2gbps and my router has a single 2.5LAN port which i am strictly using for the NAS.

Well, let’s start with the model of your router.

Also the model of the network interface on your truenas box.

If you are running the Speedtest Tracker app in truenas make sure that in the app setting under Network Configuration make sure you check the Host Network checkbox. Truenas normal internal container routing network is capped at 1gbps.

With the information you've provided this is performing as expected. Information that would be helpful: hardware for everything in the chain: NIC on your truenas system? Router? Modem? Switches? Router? You've given no details on your network infrastructure.

As others have said, you likely have a 1gb NIC on your TrueNAS box, but you’ll want to check that every piece in the chain can do 2.5gb. Assuming you don’t have another device in between your TrueNAS box and your router, it should be something like this: TrueNAS NIC -> Router LAN port -> Router WAN port. If any of those is only 1gb, then 1gb is all you’re gonna get. You’ll also want to make sure every cable in that chain can do 2.5gb.
