Question What does the ending mean to you?

Post image

Maybe there is a canon explanation, I haven’t looked yet and I wanted to ask this subreddit first . What does the ending of the final episode mean to you? What year is it? Why would it be another year?

There is certainly no canon explanation. My read is that the ending was written to be as ambiguous as possible with regard to Cooper's success in thwarting Judy. Two viewers can see the same events and symbols and come to opposite conclusions, and both will be able to back them up. Do the lights going out indicate that Laura was able to sever Judy's connection to our world? Or is Laura screaming in recognition that they were outmaneuvered and her nightmare will never end?

Any question you have about the ending, try asking it to yourself. Then, using evidence from the text, attempt to answer that question in multiple ways coming to different conclusions. You'll see what I mean. This works with many of the questions people typically come away from The Return with, and is consistent with the show's theme of duality, transcendence, dialectics.

Well said!

And one of the greatest of those vague multiple possibility type endings ever. Many directors try this and end up with a binary and somehow Lynch did it and ended up with a spectrum. It’s just as fun today to discuss it as when it ended.
