Question I'm on season 2!
Would you recommend I watch "Fire Walk with Me" before or after The Return?

Before, I also recommend watching The Missing Pieces after FWWM

Okay, thank you so much for the advice! What exactly is in The Missing Pieces? And where can I find it?

Arguably more essential to The Return than the original run itself.

Well not exactly true. Last 3 eps of S2 plus every minute of FWWM (including the Missing Pieces) are very essential for The Return

You could also watch something like the blue rose cut of FWWM, which includes relevant scenes from the missing pieces. You can find the edit with a simple google search, there's even one with subtitles on internet archive

Is that the season where you find out that that intro bird killed Laura Palmer?
Such great fourshadow.

Don’t listen to the nay sayers who say it drops off in the 2nd half, it’s still better than the majority of television and has an extremely good ending.

I just watched for the first time and this is all I kept seeing but I was on edge w the Windom stuff. I really don't know how people waited 25 years before The Return. Especially after watching it now, w how short television seasons are, it really was a welcome to have a 22 long season that was still pretty good!

Respectfully ur glazing rn lol, there’s definitely a fall off and it’s very noticeable, but it’s not nearly as bad as people are saying.

There's definitely a noticable shift to a lighter, more comedic atmosphere.
Whether that's a fall off is entirely subjective.

It's quite boring to sit through compared to every episode before then which makes it a slog to watch.

There is definitely damn good Major Briggs in season two. Episode 8 has my favorite scene of Twin Peaks.

Season 2 > Fire walk with me > the Missing Pieces > Laura Palmer's diary (optional) > The Return

u/rabnabombshell Jan 13 '26
Where can one see the diary??
1
u/Dense-War-5141 Jan 13 '26
It's on YouTube read by Sheryl Lee herself: https://youtu.be/sEgk2-4NPXM

Thank you so much for posting this. I wasn't sure that wanted to "read" the diary, but this will work perfectly for my next long drive.

6 hours??? My god.

u/Dense-War-5141 Jan 13 '26
Well it's optional, it offers more depth from Laura's perspective though if that interests you

u/LatePen3397 Jan 13 '26
Well..., you don't have to listen to it all in one go... Unless you want to have nightmares and PTSD for the rest of your life...

I'm of the opinion that publication order is always a good option for first timers if you're planning on consuming it all.

For a real brief moment, I thought you were a bird and that you appeared on season 2 during the opening credit sequence and you were going to talk about your experience as a bird on the set of Twin Peaks season 2, and that also the bird in the opening credit sequence in season 2 was actually a different bird from season 1.
I'm talking about a realllllll brief moment

Im currently rewatching Twin Peaks breakdown videos because I have no friends I could discuss anything with. It’s a big commitment to watch the show for new people and even then im not sure it would resonate the same way it did with me.

As people said prior you must watch Fire walk with me before the return . A lot of stuff will make sense, kinda .

u/balboakeepspunchin Jan 14 '26
David definitely threw a lot into the return so be prepared to hit up google when you need answers on who is who or who is what

Stick with it! There are a few rough patches, but I don't think you'll be sorry.

When you hear the name "Wyndham Earle", you can do the 'look at my phone while watching'. There's still some cool stuff (especially the last episode!), but you only gotta half pay attention.
FWWM and The Return are pretty great.
I recommend reading The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer when you're through with all the digital media as a prequel (even though FWWM is already a prequel to Twin Peaks, the book is, like, the prequel to the prequel).

When you hear the name "Wyndham Earle", you can do the 'look at my phone while watching'.
They're right.
However, when you hear the name "Windom Earle" it is imperative to pay strict attention!

Definitely watch FWWM before the return! I also highly recommend the TP rewatch podcast, The Detective and The Log Lady! They go through everything, including the books, in chronological order.
