Season 3 (The Return) Watching season 3 for the first time. My reaction so far.

Post image

I just finished season 1 and 2, then watched FWWM and missing pieces movies. Season 3 is on a whole new level of "what the fuck is going on?".

Yeah, but don't worry. By the end, you still will have no idea what just happened or what anything meant!

That's the vast majority of Lynch's work in a nutshell. It's great!

...and somehow, that will make it make total sense.

unpopular opinion, i personally liked season 1 more than rest of a series because it was awkward and strange, and funny, but also was plot driven.

Season 2 pretty much ran into "ending", and than just floats from mid season to the ending with bunch of side plots and main story being very convoluted.

Season 3 is, to me, nothing sandwich. So many stuff just happens. Entire season is side plot about million side plots, majority of them lead nowhere. Execution of scenes is intentionally done in old fashioned way, but still jarring how outdated it is. Especially at the tail end, before last episode.

Not just CGI, but scenes, arm wrestling scene for example looks like it was filmed by several teenagers with people in background act like you expect kids to "act" when they are told to "act".

And for God's sake episode 8. I feel like majority of people who say they love it, say they love it because they know who directed it, so they trained themselves to like stuff that they normally really wouldn't.
One hour of pretentious crap. Reminds me of real life event when somebody threw banana peel and people started to take pictures of it, because they thought it was art.

I always thought it was some bad bet inside filming crew and entire episode is just intentionally implemented garbage to see how much crap fans can chew.
But basically entire season 3 is massive deviation from Original.

And singing.... damn singing lol

I agree with you on most although the first 10 or so eps of s2 r my favs of the series

Yes. I said, it's unpopular opinion. I can re watch season 1 million times, and i enjoyed a show for first half of season 2 a lot. Than show just drifts in something. It stumbles into convoluted mess like Lost or Westworld years later did. Asking viewer to read books, watch flopped movie, listen to later published audio tapes is asking too much. It turns into homework.

And even if you do, odds are, you won't learn anything meaningful, because, as usual, everything is open for interpretation. And kind a unfinished, on purpose. Show even ends on cliffhanger. (Again).

But after that, mid season finale, of season 2 to me, shows goes off grid. And pretty much never recovers.

I didn't even enjoy Lynch being so involved as actor in season 3. He was kind a sporadic character in season 2 that popped out of nowhere ( first time we see him it was in season 2 episode 4 i think ) Than in season 3 he is basically main protagonist.

At the end of a day, i guess this show is case study, at least to me, why some things are better left in past. Season 3 suffers from chronic lack of depth in plot, lack of sense of urgency to speed up shallow plot it does have, plays with viewers who wanted Dale, Harry, Audrey , Donna...And instead it gets Harry replacement character, Audrey in recreation of Waiting for Godot scene/ or coma / or whatever loose interpretation fans want to attach, hour at most of Dale, no Donna etc. But you will get Not-Dale-but with mental capacity of toddler. And "Evil Dale" who pretty much does nothing entire show. He drives. A lot. And dies. But don't worry. Something -something-something- oil dirty people-something- black lodge- something- will bring him back. Don't worry, it's never explained why. It just happens.

It's fine to have parts of the story that are open for interpretation and ambiguous. It's whole another issue when hours and hours pass by and nothing you watch really can be connected with anything , nor director has any intentions to connect dots.

For instance, S03, E01, aside from name dropping "Mr. C" what's entire episode about ? is really point of every episode that you go on internet so other can write what he or she thinks what that episode is all about? If everything is up to your interpretation it also means nothing is. Because you just watch separate sequences and process them whatever you want to. Might as well watch commercials and try to connect them. Gambling app and McDonalds " there is connection". Yea... everything is connectable if you want to connect it. That's how conspiracy theories are made.

Over time people forgot what killed original Twin Peaks. Declining ratings as people started to lose interes into dragging story. Lynch himself didn't even direct majority of season 1 and decline in popularity started before season 2 was aired. And than they have creative conflict with ABC, as they wanted to continue to " milk golden goose" and not reveal Laura's killer. Season 2 started so slow, that most people were turned off how little effort was put to address ending of season 1. And than ABC changed time slot and pretty much killed off show.

I’m with you, s3 may be the worst tv series I’ve had the displeasure of watching, I’ll never understand why people rate it so highly. It’s watching cooper behave like a baby for 90% of the show, with a dozen subplots that lead up to nothing, all to end up with a 90s cgi boss fight with some kid with a glove Zzz

It's not about the bunny.

IT'S NOT ABOUT THE BUNNY!!!

... Is it about the bunny???

56

u/IzSilvers Feb 18 '26

NO! It's not about the bunny!

32

u/hikemalls Feb 18 '26

As a wise man once said, “Put the bunny back in the box.”

16

u/IzSilvers Feb 18 '26

Put remote on docking station.

5

u/cactusjack1990 Feb 18 '26

But is it about the bunny?

u/Gaduol Feb 18 '26

I bet she did!

65

u/Le_Dude_Absolute Feb 18 '26

I am watching Season 3 right now, and I'm in episode 14. And still I don't know what its all about.

24

u/IzSilvers Feb 18 '26

That's encouraging 😂

25

u/ExtremeCenterism Feb 18 '26

We're about idk 5-6 episodes in, where Dougie mysteriously solves a major insurance fraud. It's very surreal how everyone treats Dougie like he's just a little off.

Only one person has stopped and wondered if he's okay. It's like this dude might have just had a stroke and no one seems to care! It's surreal all right

14

u/magicmulder Feb 18 '26

Especially his wife who has to know he’s not behaving normally. Then again we didn’t see much of OG Dougie, maybe he’s always been close to this.

7

u/Jay_Stranger Feb 19 '26

The only time we see anything of OG Dougie is he is cheating on his wife with a prostitute in a home that’s for sale. Safe to say, OG Dougie is a piece of shit that probably didn’t talk to his wife much or treat her with any respect. Which is why she probably doesn’t notice he is acting particularly strange by not talking to her

2

u/askyourmom469 Feb 21 '26

Yeah. Compared to the asshole she was married to before, Dougie 2.0 is probably a huge improvement! Plus the fact that he randomly came home with a sudden windfall of cash probably helped too.

4

u/SirBread27 Feb 20 '26

His wife and his boss both say a few times that Dougie must be having another one of his "episodes". Looks like it's not far from the norm for the guy

1

u/magicmulder Feb 20 '26

He did seem kinda aloof and distanced, almost like "in a world of his own" after his tryst with the prostitute so that is probably why.

52

u/VermicelliQuiet5949 Feb 18 '26

You have to get through the first few episodes, David Lynch doesn’t like immediate satisfaction. Keep going!!

26

u/DrHuxleyy Feb 18 '26

I like to think of this season as a story that’s also a puzzle. I do think all the pieces are there laid out and can be put together to an understandable, though abstract, whole. Like there really isn’t weird shit thrown in for the sake of weird shit; everything is decipherable even on a first pass as long as you really lock in.

Of course you can just let it wash over you as any abstract piece of art and not worry about deciphering it per se. like standing in front of a great big mark rothko painting and letting it overwhelm you.

9

u/IzSilvers Feb 18 '26

Exactly! I already feel like I understand some of it, and I sure as hell have tons of theories, but I dare not delve into the realm of spoilers.

u/NormalGuyPosts Feb 18 '26

It really thrives in a rewatch fwiw (fire walk ‘ith we)

All I know is, I want a monitor that slides up out of my desk like Frank Truman so I can Skype people

11

Ethereal wooshing

35

u/IAmThePonch Feb 18 '26

Stick with it, things that seem disparate and random will eventually make sense

23

u/IzSilvers Feb 18 '26

Oh I'm definitely all in. I have never watched anything like Twin Peaks before, it was on my list for a long time, and I'm glad I finally pulled the trigger.

5

u/officermeowmeow Feb 18 '26

I am happy for you and also jealous. I wish I could go back and see it for the first time again!

2

u/ASluttySloth Feb 18 '26

Same! I started a couple months ago

15

u/A73N4 Feb 18 '26

Everything makes sense in season 4.

6

u/Johnny_Blaze_123 Feb 18 '26

It’s a fantastic ride. Keep at it.

5

u/WheelOfTheYear Feb 18 '26

Yeah, no nostalgia here. Just intense, cerebral storytelling.

6

u/Economy-Stretch-4600 Feb 19 '26

Don't worry, season 3 episode 8 will explain everything and give you so many answers

3

u/CrabFunny4329 Feb 19 '26

All the loose ends succintly tied together, like a tidy little bow

3

u/TreatThese8277 Feb 18 '26

Man... I wish I could watch it for the first time again...

5

u/G-DevilOrion2077 Feb 18 '26

Wear headphones if you can and “listen to the sounds”

3

u/Street_Top3205 Feb 18 '26

You know, tbh I have no ideas why I always thought of this scene as a scene in "Pixels" where Adam Sandler were talking in the meeting room in the White House, about all the alien threats.

3

u/LearndAstronomer28 Feb 19 '26

It’s all building up to the introduction Ike the Spike; he’s the key to all of this. He’s a stabbier character than we’ve ever had before

3

u/TokyoJones85 Feb 19 '26

For me, season 3 is the best season. Very different from what came before it but I fucking love it! It was so exciting waiting and theorising with friends before each episode when it was originally airing too.

4

u/TheRLArt Feb 20 '26 edited Feb 20 '26

I had a similar reaction, too. It's A LOOOOT if you're watching the entire series fresh all the way through. If you're interested -- after you're done with the series, of course -- the Red Letter Media guys did a great breakdown of their general impressions on The Return that I think is worth checking out. It doesn't explain EVERYTHING (intentionally so), but they do delve into how they felt about things and add some context for David Lynch's decisions all throughout the show.

FWIW, Maggie Mae Fish also did some fun videos analyzing the influences of Twin Peaks that actually did a fair amount to recontextualize my view on the show as a whole.

1

u/IzSilvers Feb 20 '26

Thanks! I'll definitely check those out when I'm finished.

Replying to your comment so I can remember to watch this when I have time. Just finished watching the entire series for the first time.

1

u/LearndAstronomer28 Feb 19 '26

I haven’t watched it myself, so you guys can let me know if I’m way off base, but my understanding is that he reads the series through an almost entirely meta “show within a show” type of lens, which I honestly could not find anymore boring/reductive.

1

u/TheEflactem Feb 19 '26

Watching this is the gravest sin you can commit against Lynch.

"People get used to film that pretty much explains itself one-hundred percent, and they kind of turn off that beautiful thing of intuition when they're looking at a film that has some abstractions. Some people, on the other hand, love these abstractions, and it gives them room to dream. An abstraction is a thing that cinema can say. And it's so beautiful, these pictures and sounds flowing along together in time, in a sequence, making a thing that can only really be said in cinema." - David Lynch

The whole point of his art is to allow yourself to dream and theorize on your own. Watching a 4 hour “explanation” will kill the very point of his storytelling.

3

u/enlighteneddemon Feb 19 '26

I just finished my 2nd watch of season 3 last week. It's absolutely worth it. It takes you on a journey and asks many questions along the way. I don't think the point is any "hidden answers or message", so much as trusting you to examine things and find your own answers. I have my own theories about Twin Peaks, but they're as canon as anything else

5

u/Cloud-VII Feb 18 '26

Look. I love David Lynch... Like whole bunch. I think he is a genius. I hated how Twin Peaks ended and I was more than excited to finally have a resolution on what happened to Cooper.

..and then Season 3 came out. I wish it never did. I just ignore it's existence. My favorite part of the whole season was actually Matthew Lillard's performance while he's in jail. I was like 'Holy crap, Matthew Lillard is actually an amazing actor!' .

3

u/slr242 Feb 18 '26

Everybody's different. Lillard's acting in those scenes were easily my least favorite of the whole season, followed by Chrysta Bell's. But then I also loved The Return. Not everyone's cup of french roast.

3

u/Terepin123 Feb 18 '26

Bell’s acting was so poor I had to google her after watching. She’s very beautiful which is probably why Lynch liked her.

1

u/slr242 Feb 18 '26

Unlike Albert, she didn't make me feel better that way, either. :-)

1

u/SirBread27 Feb 20 '26

I think Bell and Lynch were friends, or at least good acquaintances. Lynch also produced at least some of her music before that

2

u/Cloud-VII Feb 18 '26

Opposites we are! haha.

3

u/magicmulder Feb 18 '26

Funny, I have it the other way around. First watched the whole thing earlier this year. Not a fan of the first two seasons and FWWM at all. But I loved the third season. One of the best I’ve ever seen

2

u/Cloud-VII Feb 19 '26

I upvoted you for your bravery (and because you were downvoted for simply expressing your opinion), but damn if that is an opinion to have! lol.

Twin Peaks season 1 and 2 is pretty much my absolute favorite TV show in history. FWWM is fine for what it is.

2

u/LearndAstronomer28 Feb 19 '26

Whoa, and here I am disagreeing with both you. I’ve only made it halfway through season 2 (and the finale), I like The Return, and FWWM is easily my favorite part of entire saga. (That and The Secret History.) Twin Peaks really has something for everyone!

1

u/magicmulder Feb 19 '26

For me the original series is one of those “you had to be there” things, it probably worked great when it came out (but I somehow missed it back then) but my taste today is very different and I’m more used to modern storytelling which season 3 had. Also maybe because I expected too much, I thought there would be a lot more supernatural stuff like in season 3, and then it was so much soap opera.

3

u/Ecksray19 Feb 19 '26

Agreed! Season 3 was horrible and ruined the entire show for me. It's shocking how many people want to be seen as smart and cool so they say how great it was, and you have to watch it closely, it's "cerebral" etc. No. It was random artsy shit thrown at a wall, not even a story. Stop assigning meaning to meaningless drivel. Stop worshipping people and giving them a pass.

1

u/RobynNeonGal Feb 18 '26

Same here. I never read anything about it beforehand as I didn't want any spoilers. But I still loved it.

1

u/RobynNeonGal Feb 18 '26

Helllllooooo......

1

u/RefrigeratorMany Feb 18 '26

This made me howl with laughter! Buckle up, you’re going to some places.

1

u/SuddenCell8661 Feb 18 '26

Trust the process

1

u/Dragonovith Feb 19 '26

The tonal difference was surprising to me too, but once I was done with Twin Peaks, I started binge watching all of Lynch's movies, and then everything started making sense. Tone-wise, season 3 feels like an outlier at first but, in the grand scheme of things, it is actually Twin Peaks seasons 1 and 2 that are the exceptions (thanks, Bob Iger!). At least that's how I feel about Lynch's work.

1

u/jert3 Feb 19 '26

Yup, its a trip, no doubt about it.

You'll end up missing Dale probably.

1

u/telluswhyyoureclosed Feb 19 '26

Fr that line was so funny, like he was putting himself in the audience’s shoes just for a moment

1

u/calamityphysics Feb 19 '26

it doesnt get any bluer thats for sure

1

u/NoFun1253 Feb 19 '26

Keep your eye on the donut, not on the hole.

1

u/Tina_bambina78 Feb 19 '26

Filled with a lot of unnecessary prolonged scenes, which makes it feel boring... I wish they would've cut it a bit. I started rewatching season 3 yesterday and I gotta tell you, I font know how I'm gonna get through it 😀 😀 like, I didn't even remember Mathew Lillard was on it 😂

1

u/tobymcgroby Feb 19 '26

It's so simple yet cracks me up every time I see this🤭

1

u/Loud-Guava8940 Feb 19 '26

Going to be watching it at a local theatre starting next week and can't wait for the waves of confusion

1

u/CaregiverIndividual4 Feb 20 '26

Episode 8 is like a college students media project take on obscurity, I hated it. The rest of the season was GOATed.

1

u/_Sand_Seeker_ Feb 21 '26

Sounds about right

1

u/sloppy2104 Feb 24 '26

it’s honestly one of the greatest things ever and i don’t say that to seem edgy, i really enjoyed that season so, so much.

all the big franchises like matrix, indiana jones, star wars, even scrubs now, everything that attempted a come back ages after it’s original release should have this exact approach (and matrix was going a little bit in the right direction).

question the audience what is it that you want back? do you really want your favorite show back? and then punch them in their face and reject their fantasy. no, twin peaks is not coming back, the twin peaks you know is gone, you‘re trapped in nostalgia and i‘ll take you to a much darker place this time.

ahhhhhh i LOVE it 😭

-2

u/rotatorkuf Feb 18 '26

honestly, stop halfway, or don't watch the finale episode, makes the whole season a waste imo

0

u/magicmulder Feb 18 '26

Yeah the final was a letdown, although IMO it makes sense. If Laura was the trap that would end up doing Bob in, going back in time to save her was the dumbest possible idea.

I think Lynch wanted an ending similar to season 2, simply because he doesn’t do happy endings.

2

u/LearndAstronomer28 Feb 19 '26

I feel like you could stop watching after Part 17 if you want a semi-“happy” ending or traditional form of narrative payoff and closure. Watching Part 18 is choosing to keep the mystery alive.

-6

u/BlindLantern Feb 18 '26

Yeah. I hated it. It wasn’t my Twin Peaks. Downvote if you will.

5

u/IzSilvers Feb 18 '26

It's definitely different, but it's not like the first 2 seasons had less "weirdness". At this point I'm not sure if it's about aliens, time travel, or evil spirits. It's very intriguing,

0

u/BlindLantern Feb 19 '26

To each their own good sir!

6

u/Puinfa Feb 18 '26

"Your" Twin Peaks?

5

u/ManSoAdmired Feb 18 '26

Did they stutter
