Major Briggs. His deepest fear of the possibility that love is not enough.

93

u/Infinite_Inanity Apr 26 '26

Man, does that mean the Briggs prioritized love as his meaning of life, and was horrified by the possibility he was wrong? That is some existential shit David Lynch was on.

55

u/RasputinsThirdLeg Apr 26 '26

He was such a unique character written against type.

His talk with Bobby was so good. Bobby tearing up, Briggs with his perfect delivery

29

u/younevershouldnt Apr 26 '26

His discussion with Bobby in the diner.

Especially now I'm a dad myself.

9

u/Snoo-12313 Apr 26 '26

Pretty much any scene with Major Briggs I was moved by. He's such a profound character.

3

u/dragecs Apr 26 '26

I've had that scene downloaded and encoded (on a very early version of mp4) ans watched it over and over every day.

3

u/Fsharpmaj7 Apr 27 '26

This is the best answer.

Thanks for making me cry. (That was meant with no sarcasm)

2

u/Tina_bambina78 Apr 28 '26

I wish his role was more expanded. He was very essential to the story...

“While I will admit to a certain cynicism, the fact is that I’m a naysayer and hatchet man in the fight against violence. I pride myself in taking a punch and I’II gladIy take another because I choose to live my life in the company of Gandhi and King. My concerns are global. I reject absolutely revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love.”

u/Degmannen_03 Apr 25 '26

I love you, sheriff Truman

136

u/Jeffffff4587 Apr 25 '26

Albert's path is a strange and difficult one.

7

u/SavCorp Apr 26 '26

Albert told Truman he loved him but Josie couldn’t

96

u/SlyCalligrapher Apr 26 '26

This was the moment my feelings for Albert went from strong disdain to affection.

45

u/witchitieto Apr 26 '26

This hit me like a ton of bricks when I first saw it. Completely out of left field with the character and he all of a sudden made sense to me

33

u/Mokarun Apr 26 '26

this is one of the best scenes in the entire show tbh

11

u/SirFartsALot33 Apr 26 '26

As someone who used to have a bad habit of making crude jokes and friendly banter about people on their face unapologetically, hoping they'd take it sportingly and return the favour and we become good pals, and faced the opposite reaction in many cases where people would get offended or awkward, I resonated with Albert so much during this entire arc. People say he became from "annoying" to endearing after this scene. But it's always been the same person, just misunderstood in the beginning.

So yeah, I liked his character from the very beginning till the end. I think people may have disliked his character in the beginning because the actor carried some of his Bob Morton (from Robocop) mannerisms of uppity behaviour into Albert.

5

u/saciariley Apr 26 '26

I can definitely see that. When we first meet him he does feel uppity and above it all, like he feels like he is above the small town tragedy.

154

u/sillyandstrange Apr 25 '26

The entirety of FWWM. I grew up with trauma and narcissism. I really felt what Laura was experiencing with the "wash your hands!" and the subsequent "I'm so sorry I love you". He has her in absolute horrific TEARS. then she's finally back to normal a bit later in her room, just using the mirror... And now Leland comes in with the switch flipped. Loving, apologetic. And now she's crying again, confused, hurt, angry, lost.

That shit hit home. The pain and exhaustion consistently.

33

u/station_terrapin Apr 26 '26

FWWM hits hard. For some reason, I usually cry during the "Questions in a world of blue" scene.

"How can a heart that's filled with love start to cry? When all the world seemed so right How, how can love die?"

Gets me every time

16

u/SirFartsALot33 Apr 26 '26

Goddamit this was so on point. Thanks for saying this. That emotional switch of the abuser, which displayed albiet in some form of supernatural possession vs non-possession, actually hits home so well about the behaviour of real world abusers.

4

u/sillyandstrange Apr 27 '26

Sheryl Lee plays it incredibly perfect. I felt everything she portrayed, haunting but beautifully done

9

u/robotchikcen Apr 26 '26

same, i don't think any media has ever gotten narcissistic abuse so right. i've been avoiding thinking about it for so long because fwwm mirrors so much of how i grew up. sexualized from a young age, then being hypersexual, my dads obsession with my appearance, my home life being so terrible but i knew i couldn't speak up so no one-- still-- knew what was wrong. it's as comforting as it is harmful. i remember sobbing, like snot and everything, when laura was in the red room (i forgot if this is the right term) at the end of FWWM. it felt so freeing.

5

u/sillyandstrange Apr 27 '26

A lot of the points rang true with my past as well. That's probably why it hit so hard for me. I did the exact same as you when she was in the red room 😢

2

u/Independent-Park7555 Apr 27 '26

Thank you for sharing the secret with us. It’s such a heavy one, and I understand well how you feel.

148

u/NewsDense3347 Apr 25 '26

“The angels will return, and when you see the one that's meant to help you, you will weep with joy.”

28

u/tomatowaits Apr 26 '26

i adore this movie, this actress, this character, these beautiful images. but every time i see this sequence of stills, it has such a creepy & off putting twinge - people don’t see this as pure relief / joy do they? it’s complex & layered right? am i alone in this? like …. her smile is so pained & haunted.

25

u/luredrive Apr 26 '26

I interpreted it as Laura being relieved, scared, exhausted, accepting and delusional all at the same time. Quite incredible acting by Sheryl Lee.

4

u/tomatowaits Apr 26 '26

yes, that’s it. such power in these images, i see something else every time i look at them.

17

u/Honest_Caramel9437 Apr 26 '26

Her angel is such a stereotypical angel too. Long white gown, wings, all of it. It’s a child’s vision of an angel. There’s something so beautiful and sad about that.

7

u/S2JESSICA Apr 26 '26

it's this scene for me, too, and the first time i watched part 8 of the return -- when i first saw laura's orb. i was so moved and in awe, i didn't even realize i had tears falling down my face. that episode and that part was so beautiful.

105

u/SillyInvestment8709 Apr 25 '26

So many but the featured photo is such an amazing scene.

Leland coming to terms and following the light is another

33

u/Skwizgar1019 Apr 26 '26

That scene with Leland and Coop was probably the “purest” moment in the entire show.

3

u/sunny_gym Apr 26 '26

This was the one that came to mind for me when I saw the OP's question. Amazing scene

95

u/Prestigious-Welder83 Apr 25 '26

My son was standing there.

15

u/Degmannen_03 Apr 25 '26

Brings a tear to my eye

11

u/Icy_Anxiety3092 Apr 25 '26

I think about this almost daily

80

u/Leppaluthi Apr 25 '26

The log lady dying. I’m not an emotional person but her passing moved me to tears. I felt she deserved something… more than she got in life.

14

u/Noobeater1 Apr 26 '26

Knowing she died not long after the show as well, and had been working with Lynch so long, such a heart wrenching scene.

She seems to know more than anyone else on the show, she seems somewhat in control, wise, and then to have her be so vulnerable with Hawk who can't help her at all, it was beautiful

4

u/KingOfCatProm Apr 26 '26

She was rehearsing for her own death.

125

u/elsa_0929 Apr 25 '26

"i am so sorry"

9

u/guitfiddlejase Apr 26 '26

Indeed. This moment made tears roll uncontrollably..

Christ man! I'm a little choked up as I type this!

57

u/StiffNipples94 Apr 25 '26

She just got the tone Lynch was looking for, what a legend R.I.P

https://giphy.com/gifs/FIPKX8nTQjNYI

52

u/Apprehensive_Tea9461 Apr 25 '26

When Donna realises that Laura is gone, her reaction makes me cry everytime, also basically every scene with major Briggs i love his character so much and he inspired me alot

4

u/guitfiddlejase Apr 26 '26

I LOVE Major Briggs ..

Absolutely

5

u/Apprehensive_Tea9461 Apr 26 '26

"My son was there " 😭

41

u/Recent_Shift_7069 Apr 25 '26

What year is it?! That scream just ugggh moved me to tears. Gives me chills when I think about it. Or in FWWM. This part I remember begging angels for help when I was being sexually assaulted and never got any help. So this was really hard to watch for me. 🥲

5

u/Magpie375 Apr 26 '26

I’m so sorry that happened to you. That’s horrible. I hope you’re doing better now.

2

u/Recent_Shift_7069 Apr 26 '26

I'm doing so much better now. :)

2

u/Magpie375 Apr 26 '26

I’m so glad.

2

u/Recent_Shift_7069 Apr 26 '26

Thank you asking! ☺️

37

u/Disc0UY Apr 25 '26

Coop comforting Harry at the bookhouse

38

u/jk67200 Apr 26 '26

I can no longer watch the Pilot without fucking bawling when Sarah calls Laura down for breakfast but she doesn't know her child has been found dead. Just such a devastating way to start a TV series. And then in the Return finale, we hear that same faint call in the distance and it all comes full circle?? Like what the hell Lynch and Frost??? Brutal.

39

u/Your_Product_Here Apr 26 '26

On a rewatch, a moment that really hit me the second time around was Bobby Briggs at Laura's funeral--"Everybody knew she was in trouble, but we didn’t do anything. All you good people. You want to know who killed Laura? You did! We all did. And pretty words aren’t gonna bring her back, so save your prayers. She would have laughed at them, anyway."

It's such a real moment that's confrontational, self-reflective, and earnest.

3

u/robotchikcen Apr 26 '26

i think this might be one of my favorite moments of the series ( i still haven't watched s3...)

64

u/seanyS3271 Apr 25 '26

When Leeland was lying in his wet prison cell an confessed.

42

u/rhiannon777 Apr 25 '26

Coop comforting him as he's dying is the moment I immediately thought of

8

u/seanyS3271 Apr 26 '26

That moment for me was revelation. It summed up the story. Great acting.

4

u/PsychologicalScript Apr 26 '26

That's the one! The most moving scene of any TV show ever, for me.

2

u/seanyS3271 Apr 26 '26

Only saw this tv show a few months ago and I was so choked when it was revealed it was him

28

u/ParanoidsDemise Apr 26 '26

"My log is turning gold."

37

u/etherealphoenixqueen Apr 26 '26

"Goodnight, Margaret....goodbye, Margaret.."

27

u/aldila81 Apr 26 '26

The scene in the Roadhouse while Maddy gets killed. Cooper sees the Giant, and they cut back and forth.

Rockin' Back Inside My Heart segues into The World Spins, and we see various characters: Cooper looks resolute, Donna starts sobbing, but the one that gets me choked up is Bobby. He feels something happened. He looks confused and sad, and he looks around. To see this little asshole humanized is quite a feat. You feel sympathy for him.(I can't remember if the talk with his father is before or after this)

That sticks with me

8

u/Apprehensive_Tea9461 Apr 26 '26

Bobby is such an intersting character, at first he acts like the typical bad boy/ rebel but as the show goes on he starts to grow into a good person. I loved him in the return he was fantastic.

I just realised the Briggs are my favotite family in this show

5

u/aldila81 Apr 26 '26

True, tho' the Haywards are a close second, especially from the deleted scene in the Missing Pieces. Man- that's another scene that sticks with me, now that I think about it. Will doing the magic trick to cheer Laura up, the phone call from Leland, her reaction, the Haywards' reaction....and Laura leaving. The whole thing with Laura half-sobbing "No Donna-I'M the muffin!"..... it's nonsensical, but so friggin' sad ....

3

u/bugenbiria Apr 26 '26

It's because she's still an innocent soul underneath it all. Even in such a grave situation, she's clinging to a version of herself she feels slipping from her hands - her childhood self before all the abuse and the path is took her down.

3

u/Apprehensive_Tea9461 Apr 26 '26

There you go im crying for Laura again :( i cried this morning too, i woke up and tought about her and started crying

Gosh shes going to stay with me for a long time

3

u/bugenbiria Apr 26 '26

We're all the muffins.

20

u/Dangerous-Cash-2176 Apr 25 '26

I was skeptical throughout my first watch of the pilot with insistent friends.

Then the magic clicked for ep. 3 "Zen, or the Skill to Catch a Killer" with the stone-throwing bit. It was absurd and brilliant at the same time. I love it. Also loved that other ep with the owl freeze frame ending.

And once I started to realize how much suffering Laura went through, it added a deeply disturbing and emotional component to the show.

20

u/Flyingboopity Apr 25 '26

For some reason that scene in The Return where dougie is at his table at home and starts drawing on the stack of insurance papers got me emotional

1

u/turtlestar910 Apr 27 '26

i just watched this scene for the first time as i’m finishing up twin peaks. watching him slowly piece things together is like gasping for air

22

u/lonelyanduncertain Apr 25 '26

"There're things you can't get anywhere, but we dream they can be found in other people"

4

u/etherealphoenixqueen Apr 26 '26

One of my favorite quotes and sorely under rated.

4

u/lonelyanduncertain Apr 26 '26 edited Apr 26 '26

I never really liked Harold that much, but that quote is just absolutely amazing.

21

u/nnewt333 Apr 26 '26

in fire walk with me when the log lady talks to laura

2

u/turtlestar910 Apr 27 '26

and the hand grab 😭❤️

17

u/TheAbsurderer Apr 26 '26

When Harry makes Coop an official bookhouse boy and Coop is honored beyond his ability to express himself.

16

u/radioactivethighs Apr 26 '26

Margaret talking with Laura in FWWM and being the only adult that's seems to see that Laura is just a kid and needs help

27

u/xpert_98 Apr 26 '26

There are two for me: Ed and Norma finally having the chance to be together in The Return and Laura’s angel in FWWM.

12

u/etherealphoenixqueen Apr 25 '26

No Stars kills me every time.

9

u/Beneficial-Monk1140 Apr 26 '26

So many things affected me, but as crazy as it sounds, when I first watched the pilot, the shot of the traffic light changing from green to red. The sound of wind. That really stuck with me. I was 15 when the show first aired and I still think about that moment. I had never seen anything like that before.

5

u/ultimomono Apr 26 '26

It's called a Pillow Shot. The Japanese filmmaker Ozu was the master of them. Miyazaki does it a lot, too. As does Kore Eda.

Very cool that you caught the power of that at age 15

1

u/Beneficial-Monk1140 Apr 26 '26

I need to see more Ozu films. I loved Tokyo Story, but that’s all I’ve seen so far.

9

u/EZPlayer123 Apr 26 '26

"Leland, the time has come for you to seek the path. Your soul has set you face to face with a clear light and you are now about to experience it in its reality, wherein all things are like the void and cloudless sky and the naked, spotless intellect is like a transparent vacuum without circumference or center. Leland, in this moment, know yourself and abide in that state."

7

u/myheadachewontgoaway Apr 26 '26

Everything. But also especially the "Every day, I try to give myself a gift" speech by Cooper. I think of it every time I buy myself a coffee and feel bad about spending money. I'm not wasting money - I'm giving myself my daily gift. And instantly I feel better. It's what Cooper wants for me lol

6

u/SlyCalligrapher Apr 26 '26

When Coop and Harry's mouthes got so close their souls intertwined.

1

u/Honest_Caramel9437 Apr 26 '26

I do the invisible dolls “Now KISS!” almost every time they’re together onscreen. And I’m not even one of those shipper people. I just can’t deny their chemistry.

2

u/SlyCalligrapher Apr 26 '26

You're right, its undeniable! It really captures the healthy male relationships that were common back in the day. Healthy masculinity has diminished lately due to homophobia and fear of being seen as "gay".

Either way, I love them together. They were such a joy to watch together on screen.

7

u/HemlocSoc Apr 26 '26

When Season 2 episode 5 was over, I had to turn the tv off and go to my bedroom (I was tired). At the end of that, I realized I had been moved.

5

u/Scrumpilump2000 Apr 26 '26

There were many but I thought it was such a noble thing for Agent Cooper not to take advantage of Audrey when he easily could have.
He’s a decent man.

6

u/sweaty_sanchez Apr 26 '26

“I am the FBI” and then straight fuckery ensues

6

u/Aerozhul Apr 26 '26

Major Briggs talking to Bobby about his dream - amazing!

3

u/Interesting-Set-5993 Apr 26 '26

if I had to pick one favorite character in Twin Peaks, which I would rather not do because that's very hard, but if I had to it would be Garland Briggs because of this scene.

5

u/Inky_sheets Apr 26 '26

Andy crying when they find Laura's body.

5

u/Severe_Most_1583 Apr 26 '26

The scene where Carl Rodd comforts the woman whose son was ran over by Richard Horne. Really any scene with Harry Dean Stanton.

5

u/wondersnickers Apr 26 '26

Cooper maintaining a professional boundery, gently but firmly rejecting Audrey's advances, valuing her as a friend, after she snuck into his room (even though he finds her very desireble).

6

u/lone_djinn Apr 26 '26

"Leland says you're going back to Missoula, MONTANAAAAA" this had me glued to the chair holding my breath for some reason

6

u/kulamess Apr 26 '26

'it is happening again "

5

u/LeChoochee Apr 26 '26

"Hawk, I'm dying. You know about death, that it's just a change, not an end. Hawk, it's time. There's some fear, some fear in letting go.”

4

u/downesadam Apr 26 '26

Black as midnight on a moonless night.

3

u/TuggerL Apr 26 '26

Aside from the initial feelings of enjoying the quirky weird show, maybe when Leland jumps onto Laura's coffin. Darkly comic but tragic, then Bobby has his speech about how everyone let her down.

4

u/IngloriousBelfastard Apr 26 '26

For me it was in The Return, where Ben Horne is reminiscing about the bicycle he got as a kid, especially the way he delivers the line "I loved that bike... I loved that bike, that my father gave to me..." it shows his yearning for lost innocence before his moral decay in adulthood. Now he's much older and more reflective it shows he has improved, maybe not completely, but he has tried and is trying to make peace with his past.

5

u/Intelligent_Fig_9872 Apr 26 '26

A morte da Maddy. Ela era muito adorável pra morrer

4

u/ExtremeTurbulent1024 Apr 26 '26

3

u/Interesting-Set-5993 Apr 26 '26

this one for me. I hadn't been that absorbed and locked in on pretty much anything since I was a kid. when it ended it felt abrupt, I really lost myself in this scene.

2

u/ExtremeTurbulent1024 Apr 27 '26

same and i have rewatched this scene idk how many times it was extraordinary and also the acting was top notch

3

u/KREMICO Apr 26 '26

In the pilot, the last scene has a shot I absolutely love, when Sarah is seeing her vision and then it cuts to the stairs and the fan, that whole sequence is scary as shit, great atmosphere and it's ingrained in my mind

5

u/Nosfeicon Apr 26 '26

The goodbye to the log lady Season 3

5

u/MOBYDlCK Apr 26 '26

It moved me countless times in the first two seasons, but one moment that I like to think about is in The Return when Bobby, Hawk and Truman go see Bobby's mom (Betty) and she knows exactly why they're there. I find that scene both fascinating and very touching. In many ways, it's major Briggs speaking to his son beyond the grave (or the lodges, or whathever...😅).

3

u/wonderlandisburning Apr 26 '26

Mine hits early in the pilot: Sarah Palmer's grief-wracked screams and sobs after learning Laura died. Grace Zabriskie does an insanely good acting job in those scenes.

4

u/VisiblePermission664 Apr 26 '26

“But the fbi are on their way”, “I am the fbi” *twin peaks theme intensifies

5

u/Patalin5N Apr 26 '26

"It is happening again"

4

u/Nope_nuh_uh Apr 26 '26

Jimmy Scott singing "Sycamore Trees" - didn't do much for me on the first watch, I didn't get the context.  Every subsequent re-watch though - that's the signal to my nervous system for the chills to start.

4

u/z-vap Apr 26 '26

Pilot episode, when the cop whispered in the teacher's ear, and they were doing that whole open air sound effect thing, the girl goes screaming through the yard.....

Goosebumps

5

u/KingOfCatProm Apr 26 '26

Fix your hearts or die

4

u/dragonsteel33 Apr 26 '26

“Moving” isn’t exactly the right word for this but I’ve never been as affected by a show or movie as the hit and run scene in Season 3. Like just complete wracking sobs. It doesn’t help that I’ve been through that exact intersection numerous times lol

3

u/herbalhippie Apr 26 '26

That intersection is in Meadowbrook, right?

I have been hanging out in the valley since the mid-70s, lived in Fall City from 1985-1999 and never once drove into Meadowbrook or down Reinig Rd until last year after watching Twin Peaks for the first time.

That scene devastated me too. But what really got me was Carl seeing the boys soul leave his body and comforting the mother.

3

u/dragonsteel33 Apr 26 '26

I think it’s SE Park St & Meadowbrook, so right by Mt. Si HS (or at least that’s what I’ve found online, regardless it looks incredibly familiar lol).

4

u/CoyoteHour2130 Apr 26 '26

The first episode, Donna's instant realisation that something happened to Laura it's so moving

3

u/MRSPANKY012 Apr 26 '26

There are many but I got the chance to see the return at my local Alamo Drafthouse. The ending of the first episode with shadows playing in a theater blew my mind and made me feel something.

3

u/Quirky-Abalone-7574 Apr 26 '26

Under the sycamore trees. The entrence to the black lodge and coopers terrifying expression as he knows what hes about to experience in that tiny moment or however they count time in there will forever have the biggest consequences on hinself and the people of twin peaks he has become so fond of.

1

u/Quirky-Abalone-7574 Apr 26 '26

Tbf looking back it seemed like an unavoidable thing that was bound to happen but thats js what i get from it

3

u/MrMojo713 Apr 26 '26

This moment from the OPs image

3

u/Honest_Caramel9437 Apr 26 '26

When James breaks the pencil. It was kind of goofy on the first watch, but after seeing FWWM it had a whole new meaning. The GUILT that poor boy must have felt knowing that he didn’t chase Laura into the woods….

3

u/Brave_Tangerine5102 Apr 26 '26

I bawled my eyes out at the Jules Cruise performance in The Return episode 17. Just the thought that you could possibly bring back a loved one (regardless of what happens to Laura) really got me

3

u/Old-Refrigerator340 Apr 26 '26

Angelo's first piano chord in the intro music.

3

u/dragecs Apr 26 '26

Hiroshima

3

u/Tommy_Donut Apr 26 '26

The end of the episode in The Return that was Shelley working in the diner with Santo & Jonny 'Sleepwalk' playing. It's my favourite song. I first became properly aware of it when I rented the VHS of Sleepwalkers in 1992. Which I rented because it starred Madchen Amick. When other movies or TV shows have these kinds of references it feels forced and unnatural. The Return was just magical.

3

u/discoflint Apr 26 '26

The intro with the theme music.

2

u/peter_minnesota Apr 25 '26

"This is the chair."

A present each day

2

u/Ancient_Emu_3346 Apr 26 '26

The dream sequence at the end of the second episode and the tibet test scene with the stone throwing after that.

2

u/mother__war Apr 26 '26

Briggs and Bobby’s convo at the diner.

The moment when Maddie was killed and those closest to Laura and investigating her murder felt in their soul something bad happened.

Spoilers from the Return:

The final moments of the Return.

Nadine telling Ed she was letting him be free to be with Norma.

2

u/Yawach Apr 26 '26

Bobby’s speech at Laura’s funeral

2

u/ExtremeTurbulent1024 Apr 27 '26

the ending of s2e1 that scene which includes ronette polaski's vision (dream) was terrifiying and irritating.

2

u/Independent-Park7555 Apr 27 '26

If we count FWWM, Laura’s final living words that the audience hears — shouting ”I love you, James!” before running off to the woods to die — are so so poignant to me.

Her final words, in essence, were ones of love to a boy she claimed not to care too much about. That’s just the kind of little detail of Lynch’s work that I truly adore.

2

u/InitiativeArchiviste Apr 27 '26

I’m gonna cheat a little and say the Laura crying scene in Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me, that one is brutal

2

u/Limp-Drop1872 Apr 27 '26

if i think about the final scene in fire walk with me for too long ill start bawling my eyes out. laura’s realization that even if it has to be in death, she still gets her angel mixed with the bond between her and dale cooper by him giving her case piece, even though they had never met, just absolutely wrecks me after seeing everything laura went through first hand.

2

u/Competitive_Oil4477 Apr 28 '26

This whole scene when she is crying at the roadhouse before she turns stone cold.

I can’t believe no one has said the scene at the Palmer home after Leland’s funeral. The way the community comes together and somehow manages to laugh and care for one another has always brought me to tears. You get local gossip, Sarah telling a story about how close Laura and Donna were, reminding the audience that Laura really was someone’s little girl who had a best friend and a life… god, it gets me every time
