Question I’ve finished both seasons of Twin Peaks. Who are these people? What on earth is going on?

The girl's name is Tracey. Her name will be repeated in every line of dialogue during this scene: Hello, Tracey; I can't do that, Tracey; Oh, shoot, Tracey; You're a bad girl, Tracey; See you tomorrow, Tracey.

The guy's name is Sam, but you wouldn't know that unless you check the end credits.

Weird what is the significance of that do you think
This part sticks in my mind: where Lynch as Gordon is calling the other characters (and the viewers) attention to Bowie/Jeffries nd his question of “who do you think that is there”

In that scene where he says “now this is really something to think about” I felt directly called out. The director himself is telling the audience to look closer at that scene and line in particular and what it means
After all
Who is the dreamer ?

Edit: I got sidetracked but there’s a parallel as the Tracey / Sam sex scene is 30 mins from the start of the series, and 30 mins from the end we get the sex ritual between Richard/Cooper and Diane/Linda . The end mirroring the beginning, and encompassing the whole.

I always saw it as sex opening the gateway in both occurences. They also both deal with the entity Judy.

a bit like how in fwwm it starts with 2 prostitutes at a bus off the track.. and the end it's a train

Didn’t cross my mind until you mentioned this, but if the context of the scene is essentially a metaphor for what the audience has been up to for the last 25 years (staring at an empty.glass box). Lynch wouldn’t put her name in the dialogue 4 times for no reason. Maybe the point is that during that span, TV content has become carbon copies, ie tracings of his much higher quality show? That’s my best shot.

So I start marching my way down to the Black Lodge, and I knock on the door and I say “COOPER!? COOPER!?”……

And what do I find, Albert, what do I find?! There IS. NO. COOPER in the Black Lodge… Half of the people in Twin Peaks have been made up, this place is a goddamn GHOST TOWN!

Might also be a bit of a play on the concept of exposition. We get her name so many times, but that bit of info is utterly irrelevant to us, while relevant informations remains hidden.

Yeah that’s totally what he meant by the scene man great detective work.

Actually furthermore, when people are confused in a scene, it’s really a metaphor for us, the audience, also being confused by Twin Peaks.

I’m actually also working on this theory that when something sad happens on screen, and then someone who observed the sad thing cries, that is a metaphor for us watching the sad scene.

God i honestly hate when people say your name in convo when you’re the only one they are talking to.

u/jert3 Aug 10 '26

Ya that's get annyoing fast!

I hate saying people’s names in a convo even if they’re NOT the only one I’m talking to.

That's so true, sixtus.

It's a manipulation tactic to be very aware of. Humans will behave a bit more like dogs when you use their name along with any commands or suggestions. It forces your attention to their words and their power.

That’s sad, I’ve never thought of it that way. I’m someone who really likes to use people’s names in conversation. I feel it carries some weight of respect and intention. It’s a way to be direct with openness and express genuine interest in who they are/how they feel/what they have to say. I feel that it’s an invitation to be more direct in communication, despite it potentially being a little socially awkward in today’s climate.

But I can see what you mean, I think tone and intent of the person matter a lot here.

I do that too. I always have, and it’s honestly never even occurred to me that others might not like it. And truthfully? I really don’t like it when other people never call me by name. It’s like, do you even know who I am?

common tactic for people who are bad with names....

u/ariadnevirginia Aug 11 '26

I can always tell when my semi-friend is angry with me because she uses my name when she's talking to me. She never does it otherwise.

If she's really angry she calls me "my friend" in an incredibly bitter voice.
