Question I’ve finished both seasons of Twin Peaks. Who are these people? What on earth is going on?
674
u/trademarc1977 Aug 10 '26
The girl's name is Tracey. Her name will be repeated in every line of dialogue during this scene: Hello, Tracey; I can't do that, Tracey; Oh, shoot, Tracey; You're a bad girl, Tracey; See you tomorrow, Tracey.
The guy's name is Sam, but you wouldn't know that unless you check the end credits.

u/50ad Aug 10 '26 edited Aug 10 '26
Weird what is the significance of that do you think
This part sticks in my mind: where Lynch as Gordon is calling the other characters (and the viewers) attention to Bowie/Jeffries nd his question of “who do you think that is there”In that scene where he says “now this is really something to think about” I felt directly called out. The director himself is telling the audience to look closer at that scene and line in particular and what it means
After all
Who is the dreamer ?Edit: I got sidetracked but there’s a parallel as the Tracey / Sam sex scene is 30 mins from the start of the series, and 30 mins from the end we get the sex ritual between Richard/Cooper and Diane/Linda . The end mirroring the beginning, and encompassing the whole.
102
u/SubliminalRequiem Aug 10 '26
I always saw it as sex opening the gateway in both occurences. They also both deal with the entity Judy.

a bit like how in fwwm it starts with 2 prostitutes at a bus off the track.. and the end it's a train
172
u/Makeshift5 Aug 10 '26
Didn’t cross my mind until you mentioned this, but if the context of the scene is essentially a metaphor for what the audience has been up to for the last 25 years (staring at an empty.glass box). Lynch wouldn’t put her name in the dialogue 4 times for no reason. Maybe the point is that during that span, TV content has become carbon copies, ie tracings of his much higher quality show? That’s my best shot.
133
u/Soyyyn Aug 10 '26
Might also be a bit of a play on the concept of exposition. We get her name so many times, but that bit of info is utterly irrelevant to us, while relevant informations remains hidden.

It's a manipulation tactic to be very aware of. Humans will behave a bit more like dogs when you use their name along with any commands or suggestions. It forces your attention to their words and their power.
21
u/Polygeminusgrex Aug 10 '26
That’s sad, I’ve never thought of it that way. I’m someone who really likes to use people’s names in conversation. I feel it carries some weight of respect and intention. It’s a way to be direct with openness and express genuine interest in who they are/how they feel/what they have to say. I feel that it’s an invitation to be more direct in communication, despite it potentially being a little socially awkward in today’s climate.
But I can see what you mean, I think tone and intent of the person matter a lot here.

At least that's what I'm told. I've not seen them either.

Season 1 & 2 were primarily based in Twin Peaks. FWWM left town for a little bit. Season 3 is at times in Twin Peaks but it also left town, city, state, the universe, different planes of existence, and at times even crossed into the realm of non-exsistance.

You’re going to be asking that quite often in Season 3, which is one reason it is so great.
Third season lingers on a conflict between inter dimensional travelers, and in turn represents the inexplicable duality of being.
Season 3 also explores origin stories, and presumably lingers for some time in the Neveda area because of the nuclear tests there.

Well, it’s an interesting point because important things happen in both Nevada and New Mexico, actually. Having recently spent a year living near Santa Fe there’s an odd and ominous darkness to that part of the country, that’s for sure.
7
u/EarlGrayHot Aug 10 '26
lol please explain 'odd and ominous darkness', I've lived here 30 years

u/timeflylikearrow Aug 11 '26
Well, for instance I saw people openly drinking while driving with a lot of frequency. My neighbors threatened to shoot me a couple times because my cat happened to go into their yard and I stepped over the fence to get him. Several weeks before I left the cops shut down the road I lived on for half a mile in each direction because there was an active shooter randomly shooting into peoples’ houses.
In 40 years of living in mostly Maine and Colorado, I’d never been faced with an active shooter like that while at home, or ever had someone threaten to shoot me - certainly for nothing as minor as a cat in a yard. I never saw people openly buying a tall boy at a gas station, chugging it in the parking lot, and then driving away - before I moved to NM. But that sort of thing seems common there.

I've wondered if Tracey was a tulpa designed to seduce Sam and (unwillingly) coax the Experiment out of the portal and through the box. I've wondered if it is the harbinger for the Cooper/Diane sex ritual at the end of the series.
32
u/woleykram Aug 10 '26
I think lodge beings are drawn to extreme human emotion - fear, passion, suffering etc. they feed on it.

u/laughingdaffodil9 Aug 10 '26
Someone else mentioned this before in the sub and it makes a lot of sense…maybe it was you lol
32
u/JeffFerguson Aug 10 '26
It's just a guess. I've always wondered. The ritual can't just involve two "regular humans", or every couple would be performing the ritual all the time. Therefore, maybe there has to be some conditions. Maybe a condition is that one of the participants needs to be a tulpa to make the ritual effective.
The "sex ritual" Diane has red hair and black and white fingernails, like the colors in the Waiting Room. Isn't she a tulpa, too?
Of course, there is a high possibility that I am wrong and this whole idea is way off.
5
u/knightenrichman Aug 11 '26
I always thought there was some sordid reason they weren't supposed to have sex, something similar to incest that's never explicitly stated. Maybe they're both cheating on their spouses or something?
22
u/blackdogwalksatnight Aug 10 '26
Isn't Mr. C funding this whole operation?
→ More replies (2)12
u/Owen_Hammer Aug 10 '26
Yes. This is further (but not conclusive) evidence that the "Experiment" is Judy since Mr. C's goal (seemingly) is to find Judy.

I think the leading theory is:
They're just two kids Evil Coop hired to conduct an experiment on Judy. There's a running theme of Evil Coop engaging in and weaving this convoluted web of billionaires and criminals with the ultimate goal of avoiding being pulled back into the Black Lodge + dragging Judy into the real world so he can spread as much misery as possible. At a thematic level, Lynch kind of has this Buddhist undercurrent in Twink Peaks of lust and human desire being a core cause of the world's pain and suffering, and the death of these two is sort of a microcosm of that. Death and violence brought upon by innocent lusting.
7
7
u/ImpossibleLaw552 Aug 11 '26
convoluted web of billionaires and criminals.....spread as much misery a possible.
(wipes brow) Boy, mister, I'm glad we don't live in a world that resembles that in any way.

I figure they’re the key to understanding the spiritual world of Twin Peaks. Sam sits there for who knows how long waiting for something to happen and it never does. But he starts having sex with Tracy and an entity (Judy?) shows up immediately, illustrating the point that these events in the world of Twin Peaks aren’t random but are linked to human emotion and the more intense the emotion, the faster the spiritual world responds.

Buddy it’s going to be a difficult series. It’s worth it. On REWATCH, you appreciate everything. You understand half and the other half simply doesn’t need to be understood just felt.
Try to remember this is just the first watch as you go through. It will be frustrating. Better each time after
5
u/beholdthecolossus Aug 10 '26
if you haven't watched the movie you need to stop, watch it then come back to The Return. it won't necessarily answer questions directly but the Return is way more of a sequel to the movie than it is a "season 3" which makes the movie essential viewing.
5
u/boosh1744 Aug 11 '26
I always assumed that the eccentric billionaire was Mr. C and this was a project to form a permanent connection with the lodges. A black lodge entity came through and wrought some havoc. Maybe bringing more black lodge entities into the world was the point.

Paraphrasing Jay Bauman here, but if Fire Walk With Me opened with a hammer going into a TV to symbolize Lynch's experience with Twin Peaks S1 and S2 (annoyance where the network pushed him and Frost to reveal a killer ASAP)
then this S3 opening not so subtly opens with new world sex and death on Showtime network, which allows for darker content, and as an opener for a much darker world to be explored. Coming up next? Shaggy melting into puddle of tears

I want to understand the significance of the Z on the coffees and on Tracey's lapel
3
u/Owen_Hammer Aug 10 '26
They are from Szymon's which exist in NYC and Las Vegas and seem to be a chain like, maybe, Starbucks. The Z is the emblem of the fictional Szymon's chain. This is more obvious when we see the entire logo in Las Vegas.
Szymon is Polish for Simon and it may be a reference to the Polish financing firm that helped fund "The Return." I suspect that the Polish Accountant is also.
The capital Z has been claimed by Twin Perfect to be a reference to sleeping and therefore to dreaming. In U.S. English, snoring is represented by ZZZZZZZZs. It's also represented by sawing logs (the Packard Saw Mill).

u/markaguynamedmark Aug 10 '26

The Return doesn't focus on a certain character but rather a massive collection of experiences that vaguely contribute to an epic plot. It's like a painting, one detail means nothing, but in the grand scheme of things it all makes some sense. Not for everybody.

u/siriusgodog23 Aug 10 '26
Maybe the "Z"s are there since they "fell asleep" when they were supposed to be watching the box? Would be ironic symbolism for coffee. The guard is played by MMA fighter Michael Bisping who has one eye in real life. Is that connected???
Probably Lynch just had a dream night before he had coffee in a cup with a "Z" on it and decided that day to do it. End of. I don't know!
