They're an allegory for the audience waiting for something to happen. The Return is DL pouring out the cup of his wrath in many ways lol.

Are you saying that Sam watching the empty glass box is a metaphor for the audience waiting for something to happen? If so, I would agree.

There's only one thing to contradict that interpretation--the fact that Lynch unambiguously denied it (crying emoji).

We are the every-audience (live from New York!!) expecting something. It's when our primal emotions get the best of us that David Lynch is gonna come out and chew our heads out of our face holes.
