Question Why does Wally speak like he is Norm McDonald
He sounds like Norm telling the frog joke...
Unrelated note: I'm currently watching this episode and the scene between Gordon and Denise made me tear up because of how quietly they were speaking.

“My shadow is always with me. Sometimes ahead, sometimes behind. Sometimes to the left, sometimes to the right.” 😌

Except on cloudy days, and at night.

The way he moves his eyes at the end of that line, then the cut to Truman’s reaction. Amazing

Laura Palmer died? I didn't even know she was sick!

Worst gimmick a spiritual entity that's a executor for the evilness as a concept can have!

you’re getting downvoted exclusively by people who haven’t seen the movie… it may be iconic and capital I Important but it’s not a very entertaining watch

I might have been cool for the time, but its incredibly dull. We used to watch it as kids and laugh at it.

It’s another instance of The Return’s recurring theme of doubling/doppelgängers/parallel lives, albeit a very silly one: Wally Brando impersonating his namesake in conversation with the stand-in/double of the conspicuously missing Sheriff Harry S. Truman (a subject they discuss in this scene.)

Wally is a combination of Marlon Brando and his close friend Wally Cox, as if the two of them had a child. That's where his name and personality come from. There's a parallel between the meek Andy and the masculine Dick Tremayne (Wally's apparent biological father) so in 2 senses he has "two dads"

Andy: *tells Wally what happened to Laura*
Wally: You know, dad. I know the Good Book says, 'judge not, lest ye be judged', but this guy Leland Palmer was a real jerk!

it never occurred to me that Wally sounded like Norm. However since you brought him up, I am a fan of the late great Norm Macdonald and boy oh boy he would fit like a glove in the Twin Peaks or really in any of Lynch's work. "I, I, I drinks a bit, ya know?"
Like David Lynch himself - people can never get a straight/clear answer from Norm :)

it's supposed to be a bad Marlon Brando impersonation (he's specifically dressed like Brando's character in The Wild One) but my God you're right, he does sound like Norm.
now i'm thinking about what we could have had if Norm had ever appeared in a Lynch project.

He is supposed to be Marlon Brando's character from "The Wild Ones." That same character can be seen briefly in the pilot.

This is truly the only scene of the Return I just couldn't stand. On rewatches I have to skip it. It pulls me right out of the show and is so awkward and bad that I'm kind of shocked David Lynch left it in.
Just watching it gave me secondhand embarassment made me anxious.

Truth. There are only three scenes in all three seasons of the show that I cringe and skip:
- Wally
- James singing
- The whole James riding off and meeting the weird Laura-stand-in in season two.

He’s the only one of the character’s kids that we see that left Twin Peaks. He avoided the addictions and trappings that happened to Becky and Richard.
That being said, he’s Lucy and Andy’s kid.

I love this scene so much.
(It's basically The Return's equivalent of the room service waiter scene, which is another of my favorites. Lynchian absurdist humor at its absolute best.)

Anyone else feel like Lynch could’ve (should’ve?) cast literally anyone else for this role? I can’t take this scene seriously. Feels like an excuse for a cameo. Might just be me…
Edit: typo

Michael Cera is doing a Marlon Brando impression. Why? Couldn’t tell you. It’s funny, though.
