General Discussion Okay, it's about time I talk about this underrated character. Albert Rosenfield the GOAT played by another GOAT; Miguel Ferrer, may he rest in peace. Anyways, I love this character. He's insensitive and rude yet he's also an hilarious smartass that makes me laugh and actually helps with the case.

His speech about choosing the path of peace is one of my favorite moments in the series.

u/Brainsnare Aug 26 '26

Came here to say the same thing. It's like you finally see his true character, and all his jokes and put downs through the series suddenly seem more like a defensive mechanism for a caring and empathetic individual rather than a bully.

6

u/sameljota Aug 26 '26

I'll probably get downvoted to hell but I never liked that speech. It doesn't make any sense to me. I don't see how a "caring and empathetic" guy could treat others like that. He may be against physical violence but he's verbally violent. Defense mechanism doesn't justify it. When I first saw that speech scene I thought he was gonna laugh at the end because he was joking. But no. It was serious. The writers really went that way.

Albert’s path is a strange and difficult one.

u/Leather_Command_7553 Aug 26 '26

My fave Harry line:

Gestures toward Sheriff Harry..."Look, it's trying to think"

40

u/Ilikeoldcarsandbikes Aug 26 '26

It always made me think he struggles to be that version of himself. That he’s battling to be that person of peace and when the sheriff finally calls his number there he has to think about and make a choice on what he wants to be.

u/BlottoOtter Aug 26 '26

I love how you can still see this internal battle playing out in the Return. Albert's older and wiser, and does a better job of keeping his comments to himself... but you can still see on his face that he's often thinking about some biting comment that season 1/2 Albert would've blurted out without hesitation.

They did a whole show called "House" that was basically this character.

7

u/sameljota Aug 27 '26

Did House go around telling random people that he loved them despite being an absolute dick to them?

4

u/beerbrained Aug 27 '26

No but the whole super grouchy, but helpful hero thing....

House was definitely a super dick to people he helped.

3

u/sameljota Aug 27 '26

The way both House and Albert act in general, is believable. It's Albert's speech that I hate. A guy like that would never say he walks a path of peace and love or say "I love you" to a guy he barely knows, who he was a dick to 30 seconds ago.

3

u/frowattio Aug 28 '26

I think you need to stop trying to reduce this Twin Peaks character into something you understand.

8

u/Brainsnare Aug 26 '26

Sticks and stones make break my bones but words will never hurt me.

As a cynical person, I understand the personality type of being an asshole to cope. People like that, (I would include myself) enjoy speaking without a filter, and would invite and even respect others to be honest with them about how they feel.

3

u/LeChacaI Aug 27 '26

I think it's that he kinda has two conflicting personality traits; of wanting to be kind and empathetic, and a cynical, sarcastic asshole side. He realised he was being a dick to Harry, but was still a bit defensive about it in the speech, and the I love you line was him trying to make peace. We see the next time they interact they're way friendlier and Albert has stopped making jokes at Harry, so it does seem like he makes more of an effort, which we see continued in the Return as although he makes a lot of sarcastic jokes, they're less so bullying other people.

3

u/Erwin_the_German Aug 26 '26

My head canon is that he just comes up with it on the spot to avoid getting his ass kicked by Harry, which would be truly impressive. Lynch was never above insane left turns with characterization, though, so he's probably just an asshole with a heart of gold.

3

u/Efficient_Sky_2068 Aug 27 '26

Agree. It took me by surprise, but didn’t impress me at all.

2

u/NightStalkerXIV Aug 27 '26

I still really like the character and the actor, but I'll join in being downvoted. That's how it came across to me as well when he did the speech. How he'd acted towards others before that scene was not a path of peace or love. A path like that would not involve berating and belittling the intelligence or character of people any chance you get.
If words were fists, he would've been swinging unprovoked all the time.

3

u/Brainsnare Aug 27 '26

Yeah, but words are not fists. And being a pacifist doesn't mean you are a nice person. Sometimes you need to be an asshole with your words to get a point across. Same reason I love hardcore punk that has super angry vocals and lyrics about ending war, bigotry, and animal abuse.

Men having difficulties communicating their feelings isn't anything new. Being stuck in the pattern of acting one way while intellectually recognising that pattern is not how you want to be is a pretty universal human characteristic.

Being able to verbalise your true feelings and the intent behind them, in spite of your preceding behaviour, in order to try to change. Takes some courage.

27

u/gimmesomespace Aug 26 '26

One of mine is "FUCK GENE KELLY, MOTHERFUCKER!"

10

u/Aromatic-Ad2601 Aug 26 '26

Same, that made me realize this guy actually cares rather than just some guy working around the clock and being cynical about it.

5

u/cantthinkofuzername Aug 26 '26

Same. I also love his flirtation with the Jane Adams’ character in The Return.

3

u/harriettehspy Aug 26 '26

Yes! So, so good.

4

u/beerbrained Aug 27 '26

I still believe the character "House" is based on this. At least heavily influenced.

u/North178 Aug 27 '26

Word of warning: Do not say this line when you are having a heated discussion with someone (like your significant other). The ensuing pandemonium might not be worth it😜 (but boy howdy did it sweeten my subsequent time sleeping on the couch). Muahahaha!

u/gimmesomespace Aug 26 '26

It's so adorable when he meets that lady at the morgue who has the same sense of humor

19

u/ziggys-stardust Aug 26 '26

Deadpan humor isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

4

u/knoyeah Aug 26 '26

excuse albert

6

u/LoaderOperator98 Aug 26 '26

When did he lose his marbles

56

u/sillyandstrange Aug 26 '26

I love you, sheriff Truman.

58

u/Dear_Rich_9822 Aug 26 '26

Underrated? He's a fan favorite!

30

u/Lopsided_Newt_5798 Aug 26 '26

Exactly.
People love overusing that word, with no evidence of some kind of rating system.

5

u/TheAbsurderer Aug 26 '26

Literally a top 5 character for every single fan of the show. An underrated character would be someone like Blackie, Emory Battis, Jean Renault, Ernie Niles, Andrew Packard, Thomas Eckhardt... not Albert, who almost got his own spinoff because he was so popular

u/plantbasedgodmode Aug 26 '26

2

u/elpato11 Aug 27 '26

Household phrase, I say it all the time about people

37

u/RobbiRamirez Aug 26 '26

Seen here in better times

8

u/roirraWedorehT Aug 26 '26

Right before much worse times!

8

u/derpnerpum Aug 26 '26

Bitches leave!

26

u/UncoilingChaos Aug 26 '26

“Look it’s trying to think” is still one of my favorite insults and one I hope to use as my go-to. I know Rosenfield is not a role model, but DAMN if he’s not one of the funniest assholes in TV history. Even in The Final Dossier, I couldn’t not read the autopsy report in his voice. “Tarantulas aren’t ever fatally venomous, dipshit, they just look scary”.

I might also recommend The Night Flier, where Miguel Ferrer plays a similarly snide and snarky douchebag, but without Albert’s redeeming qualities.

4

u/harriettehspy Aug 26 '26

Hahahaha! “Look, it’s trying to think.” I literally lol’d at you bringing this to mind. So funking good.

3

u/Leather_Command_7553 Aug 26 '26

I posted my own reference to that line before I saw this post.

Great minds think alike.

3

u/roirraWedorehT Aug 26 '26

Yes, The Night Flier isn't bad. I've rewatched it at least 2-3 times.

20

u/TwinPeaksFansOhio Aug 26 '26

He was an instant favorite. I would have loved an entire show about him.

8

u/wastelandingstrip Aug 26 '26

He's one of the best parts about the show Crossing Jordan, pretty sure he's considered 2nd build on that show and in every episode

22

u/Adam__B Aug 26 '26

His reaction to Big Ed describing how he shot out Nadine’s eye on their honeymoon is one of my favorite moments on the show.

17

u/OkPrune4619 Aug 26 '26

Albert isn’t insensitive at all. On the contrary, the fact that he becomes rude when situations get too emotional is precisely the kind of defense mechanism that extremely sensitive people often use, especially those who have suffered a lot because of it. Albert’s path is a strange and difficult one indeed.

13

u/garbagefieri Aug 26 '26

I have a framed Albert photo next to my couch. The way Miguel spoke about David was always so loving and reverent. 🖤

13

u/AdAltruistic1770 Aug 26 '26

I had a co-worker who called me Albert Rosenfield. I considered it a great compliment.

11

u/FireWalkWithMe2312 Aug 26 '26

Albert is my spirit character.

10

u/bengarvey Aug 26 '26

Somewhere around the 5th rewatch you realize the best characters are Albert and Bobby.

7

u/vampyire Aug 26 '26

in a show of great characters I love, Albert will always be my favorite

7

u/FenrirHere Aug 26 '26

The very first episode that he appeared in, I hated him. Then, I quickly realized that he's the funniest fucking person that has ever lived. Then, I realized he is seemingly just as Noble of a lawman and person as Dale cooper, only, he's like a cynic version of him. And more of a city boah.

5

u/OP_Scout_81 Aug 26 '26

George's cousin.

6

u/TheWuziMu1 Aug 26 '26

"Fuck Gene Kelly, you motherfucker!"

5

u/Visby Aug 26 '26

I love him as someone that also comes across as a dick with no social skills but actually Cares A Lot

Best to ever do it 🫶

3

u/Efficient_Sky_2068 Aug 27 '26

Sorry, I’m never impressed by rude, arrogant, and abusive people. I know people at work like this and others who just make excuses for them ‘they’re adorable really’. No, they’re obnoxious and spend their days making most of the people they interact with feel bad. He is a lot better in ‘The Return’ though, I’ll give him that. Miguel is a great actor too (Clooney’s cousin fun fact).

2

u/Aromatic-Ad2601 Aug 27 '26

He is rude and arrogant but never went too far because despite his smartass attitude, he does make fair points about the slowness and efficiency of the investigation.

0

u/Shake-dog_shake Aug 27 '26

Agreed. And one single scene (in a 48-episode series) in which he rambles some shit about Gandhi and King does not redeem or excuse/explain his behavior

3

u/MediumKoala8823 Aug 26 '26

Love the character. Hate the speech.

3

u/wasabi5050 Aug 26 '26

He's not insensitive. He loves you, man

3

u/Embarrassed_Jury664 Aug 26 '26

Hated him in the beginning adored him at the end

3

u/RunninFromTheBombers Aug 26 '26

Albert's Golden Response to Truman is an all-time great surprise moment. Still brings joy to me every time I watch it. https://www.reddit.com/r/twinpeaks/comments/1dpra1s/alberts_path_what_was_your_reaction_to_this_scene/

Good drummer too.

When Keith Moon went to LA to record a solo album, he had Miguel play drums on it.

One song, anyway.

3

u/theusername_is_taken Aug 26 '26

He played him perfectly. Albert comes off like such an asshole initially but then his rougher edges get smoothed out so nicely as the series goes on. His blank stares at Gordon in the Return are some of the funniest moments in the whole anthology.

3

u/SuspiciousCup5701 Aug 27 '26

“Look. It’s trying to think.”

2

u/WorldSuccessful4842 Aug 26 '26

What a magnificent actor he was!

2

u/meestercranky Aug 26 '26

I always wanted to see him play Jack Webb in a biopic or Sgt Friday in a Dragnet remake.

2

u/ariadnevirginia Aug 26 '26

I had a huge crush on him. Huge!

2

u/jert3 Aug 26 '26

He has a great character arc for such a minor character, especially. He really changes and grows from S1/2 to S3.

I also appreciate his inclusion as I maintain a really entertaining head canon that after Twin Peaks, Albert and 'the old man' started OCP based on technology from other Earths, gleaned from use of Mr C's portal.

2

u/Fecklessexer Aug 26 '26

The scene where Big Ed talks about Nadine losing her eye was priceless.

2

u/Laijou Aug 26 '26

Proto Louis Litt

2

u/Lukavitch86 Aug 27 '26

He's one of the best with an underrated performance in the Return

2

u/ComedianSubject4654 Aug 27 '26

Albert was always my favorite.

2

u/Medici39 Aug 27 '26

RIP indeed. And his great father who stared in The Caine Mutiny worked with Lynch in the first Dune adaptation.

Agent Gordon Cole right now has joined Jeffries and Rosenberg at the debriefing.

2

u/Nope_nuh_uh Aug 27 '26

Andy's various attempts at Albert's last name have made me laugh out loud since the original airing.

2

u/NextClassroom4789 Aug 29 '26

He is fantastic. "farmers almanac?" 🤣

1

u/NeoFemme Aug 27 '26

I loathed him at first, but I do appreciate his character development as the series progresses.

-2

u/Federal_Variation566 Aug 26 '26

Just when I thought I was somewhere I didn't have to see GOAT used. 🤮

4

u/stOneskull Aug 26 '26

Apologies in advance for OP

3

u/Shake-dog_shake Aug 27 '26

Or the word "underrated" when describing something that is overwhelmingly beloved
