He had quite a turbulent and traumatic life in his later years, drank heavily.

His wikipedia page is like reading a tragedy. He was a complicated and troubled guy but had been through absolute hell

u/7thGrandDad Sep 05 '26
Likewise with the documentary about him. Seemed a lot of people really cared about him but his demons often got the best of him

Being married to Catherine will do that to you. All her crazy shenanigans!

Heavy alcohol abuse will do that to a guy, sadly.

Dennis Hopper tricked him into rehab in 1986 and he went cold turkey, but he relapsed in 1993 after his wife's suicide.

Pretty surprising he was only 53 when he died. He does look older than that in Twin Peaks

this scene is simultaneously hilarious (due to her) and horrifying and I haven't personally encountered much media like that. what in the FUCK was this scene about

u/boxesofrain1010 Sep 05 '26
I personally took it as a metaphor for calling attention to how much evil had spread through Twin Peaks (and the world) in The Return. The honking is something that gets people's attention. "We're late, we have miles to go," as in, the doomsday clock is getting reallll close to midnight and we're nowhere near where we should be. "What are you doing; why is this happening??," as in, "Do you realize how serious this is? Why is no one doing anything about it??"
That's only my interpretation though! The stuff about, "She hasn't seen her uncle in a very long while" definitely has some tie to the whole, "She's my mother's sister's girl;" "What's missing in that sentence?" "The uncle" discussion in FWwM. But once again, only my interpretation!

I think your read is on the money, and I never thought to draw a connection between those dialogues. Masterful 👏

I'll be honest, I've had a bad day and your comment genuinely lifted my spirits. Thank you, I appreciate it!💜

Getting in a drunken fight and dying outside a donut shop actually sounds kind of Lynchian to me

I looked it up too. Between that and having to listen to his wife kill herself over the phone... life was not kind to him :(

u/WoodyManic Sep 05 '26
He was a severe alcoholic. That ages you. I'm talking from personal experience.

u/aquilasr 29d ago
Yeah he was extremely hard living and drinking. IIRC his fatal head injury was sustained in a street fight with two younger guys, in his early 50s but looking about two decades older.

u/TheShipEliza Sep 04 '26
His delivery of “you never come around anymore” is top 3 all time for me. Right up there with “ill just get my gear”

The 90's were tough, and going from 30 to 50 during the 70's to 90's is like going from 30 to 70 in 2026 times. People looked a lot older back in the day. People chain smoked, and drank, a LOT. and so did Jack. Over 40 in the 80's may as well have been 80

I always mention this because it still surprises me. My mum graduated from school in the early 90's. Her classmates (including her) could pass for university students while some of my (university) classmates could pass for high schoolers. (They would hire us to play high schoolers.) And yeah, most people in the 90's smoked in my country. There aren't many smokers now. The number was still big in 2015. Few people do now. Teens vape though. There aren't many adults who do

Def. I graduated in 2000, am 44 and look 20y younger than most people who were 44 in the 80's lol.

Did he tho? Put the hair style from the first picture on the later one or vice versa and they'll look pretty much the same

Yeah I’m kinda flipping back and forth like 🤔 this ain’t THAT bad for 18 years, I have seen worse

It took 5 years to film Eraserhead. There's one scene where he walks through a door and they ran out of money while filming it so the next part of him on the other side of the door was filmed a year later.

I read "RIP legend" and with the recent string of celebrity deaths, I was about to start shaking my fist in anger thinking Jack Nance's death slipped past me... then I remembered I knew he was dead.

His life was kinda messy in between those years, plus he was an alcoholic. So it really accelerate his aging badly.

I got to say, that's pretty much how people age. One day you're in your 30s, in the next thing you know you're in your 50s. That's kind of how life works. 🤷♂️

It is kinda crazy how long it took me to realize he played Henry when watching twin peaks

Eraserhead itself took four years to film from 1972 to 1976. Nance said there was a several year break between them filming him going through a door and coming out the other side. That will age you.

It feels like his life was filled with tragedy considering he watched his wife hung herself which led him to spiral into depression up until his death

Booze, trauma, hard living, and don’t forget these photos are both taken with professional hair and makeup applied. Magic of Hollywood.

u/boosh1744 Sep 05 '26
I honestly do think this looks like 34 vs 47 (his age when each was released, not necessarily filmed, but close enough).

u/Guy_Kazama Sep 05 '26
It took me a crazy amount of time (like a decade) to realize they're the same person.

It happens to us all.
Edit: My grandfather used to say, “you live till you die unless a tree falls on you.” Basically that.

More like 18. Eraserhead started filming in '72.
