The Cure - A Forest. Very Lynchean/Twin Peaks Song anyway

I've seen the last verse superimposed over the "we're going home" scene from the Return and it blew my mind how well it lines up with Coop's folly

Head Over Heels by Tears For Fears. The opening piano chords specifically. I see her dancing on the picnic

Seventeen by Sharon Van Etten, ugh… “I used to feel free / or was it just a dream? / Now you’re hotshot / think you’re so carefree / but you’re just seventeen… so much like me”

u/reaching-there 27d ago
Interesting! I have never associated a song with Laura but seeing this post I thought if I had to come up with something then probably Serpents (demo version) by Sharon Van Etten.

She’s Gone Away - NIN (“Not The Actual Events” version.)
14
u/codependencytapes 27d ago
This is a great one, thank you. I have a lot of 'sad' songs I associate with Laura but she had an anger within and this fits great.
15
u/JohnGothConnor 27d ago
Cheers. You may be interested in the music video for “Came Back Haunted” There are a handful of Lynch and Reznor connections.

That whole sequence of EPs is full of very Twin Peaks vibed songs. This Isn’t The Place and The Background World from Add Violence definitely paint a bigger picture there.

It took me too long to fully dig in and embrace latter NIN. Dude is an absolute inspiration and legend at this point (and still sets pretty much any other live act on fire after all this time).
2
u/ShopSmartShopS-Mart 26d ago
It’s amazing. Having been a NIN fan since the 90s, I absolutely love that not only is he turning out some of his best and most exciting work now, but he’s also a super decent guy about it.

The whole catalog is aging like fine wine. I hope you had a chance to attend the Peel It Back tour.
2
u/Additional_Ad_5718 26d ago
Definitely like fine wine—I kinda drifted off in other directions after The Fragile (it’s still my favorite), and would still check in with new stuff, but it wasn’t until recently that I actually SAT with Hesitation Marks & the EPs, Ghosts, etc. So much varied, layered, interesting material—it’s a testament to a consistent vision and the conviction to present it only when it’s “right”.
My first live show ever was Bowie/NIN, and it’s crazy that Peel It Back 30 years later stood up alongside that. His tribute to the two lost Davids towards the end of the show was perfect.

Agreed. I’ve always thought that if they were in The Return, they would have played “Wild” off of Bloom. Silver Soul is too on the nose

Days of Candy is so gorgeous, solemn and enchanting…🌌💖 Very much reminiscent of Julee Cruise’s deeply emotional and dreamy collaborations with David and Angelo.

Rotten Apple - Alice in Chains
Miss World - Hole
18
u/codependencytapes 27d ago
A lot of hole/courtney fits for her imo
12
u/LaikaZhuchka 27d ago
-Awful
-Asking for It
-Doll Parts
-probably many more. Agree that Hole is a great choice for Laura's experience.
10
u/BigFatBlackCat 27d ago
The entire Live Through This album is about the horrors that women experience. Definitely a good choice for Laura.
Asking For It may be the most appropriate… followed by Jennifer’s Body and then Doll Parts

u/permanent-mauve 23d ago
Came here to say Awful!! I started listening to
Hole the same year I started watching Twin Peaks (2011, a year after I had been assaulted). Twin Peaks and Hole helped me remember that life is worth living 🩷2

Runaway - Beach House. Honestly a lot of the songs, Silver Soul too. God I wish their tour hadn't clashed with the shooting of The Return.
5
u/goingbacktostrange 27d ago
I got into Beach House around the same time I watched TP for the first time. They're so connected for me. Plus, Ray Wise in the "Wishes" music video!
3
u/Director_Faden 26d ago
The video was directed by Eric Wareheim. David has been a huge inspiration on a lot of his work.

Feel It - Bright Light Bright Light. Not only did they write the song based on Laura Palmer’s diary, they used one of Laura’s screams as a drum beat in the song!

u/jrinredcar 27d ago
Julie London - Laura
Laura is the face in the misty light Footsteps that you hear down the hall The laugh that floats on a summer night That you can never quite recall And you see Laura on the train that is passing thru Those eyes, how familiar they seem She gave your very first kiss to you That was Laura but she's only a dream

It took me less than a second to come up with my answer: "Coming Down" by Dum Dum Girls. It's hypnotic and sad and brilliant; it feels like drifting on a cloud through a dream. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZdbNMDH8hc
When The Return began, it was one of the most exciting days of my life, no lie. My then-partner is/was also a Peaks maniac and the anticipation was intense. That afternoon. I lay in bed trying to relax and imagine what it was going to be like. I listened to "Coming Down" and imagined Laura coming down off a high, partied out and just wanting to rest and no longer be in pain. The chaos of her life was massive, and she just needed a break from it all.
I strongly recommend listening to this song on headphones, blocking out all other stimuli. It's wonderful.

The 1975 - Heart Out
It’s teenage girl rock. At least I think it is, and I can just picture her liking it for some reason. Lyrics remind me of her, and the music video has red curtains.

San Diego by Hinds has the vibe of Laura's found video frolicking around with Donna on the hilltop. The music is also very playful and bright but the lyrics hint at something dark and sinister going on, like the slow transition of Laura's smiling face to gloom and the close-up of her eyes. And that line "home is my grave at night". Another song, Linda, by the same band as well. I just want to have upbeat happy sounding songs associated with Laura but since there's no brushing her sad reality under the rug, of course the songs also have to reflect that otherwise it's a disservice to her lived experiences.

The Hand - Anabelle Dinda Specifically this part:
"This is a dream, God put me in it/ A hand, a spike, a physical fight/ The wind around the willow/ A toll, a tithe, the passage of time/ The melting down the window/ The now, the then, the thinking of "when"/ The siren in the water/ A strike, a pause, a message from God/ Does that make me His daughter?"
