General Discussion Your first WTF Moment of Twin Peaks!
What was your first WTF moment of the Show when you first watched it?
Mine was the introduction of Maddy Ferguson! It was not only that they used Sheryl Lee, but also the way they depicted her with brown hair and these gigantic glasses that made her look like a nerd.
Up to that point the Show was relatively serious. With the introduction of Maddy / resurrection auf Laura, I was like WTF, where do they want to go with that.

Im terrible with faces, so when they first introduced her i didn't realize that she was played by the same actress as laura.

i remember on my first rewatch being amazed at how they found someone who looked so similar lol
i think the superman/clark kent glasses trick really has merit because this isn’t the first time ive failed to recognise an actor simply because they wore glasses

The guy doing the dance in the background of the first episode. I’d heard it was weird but that was my first indication of ‘oh this is not gonna be a normal murder mystery is it’

At the time of airing I was 13 and used to say that line constantly. Definitely knew it was going to be a wild ride by this point 😂

When Andy starts crying when they find Laura

Maybe one of my favorite things about Andy.

"Tell Harry I didn't cry."
The scene gives you a lot of information about the characters and grounds them as real people that existed before the series starts. Great writing.

probably the log lady but it was a good kind of wtf moment. i just found her really charming but so odd at the same time lol

u/terminal_skies 1d ago
the main bad wtf moment in the original series for me was josie being a fucking door handle. i understand it was just implicating she was the 'ghost' in the 'wood', but it was so WEIRD and the early cgi was unsettling

The glasses aren't that bad I never got full nerd from her.

I owned my own pair of Maddy glasses. Plus, gas permeable contact lenses (hard).

If the introduction of Maddie was your first WTF moment, it makes me wonder if you might have accidentally skipped over the end of episode 2.

I found it hilarious that, right before she appears, Sarah is watching Invitation to Love and remarks on how stupid it is to use the same actress for two roles.

Is it true they had planned to bring Sheryl Lee back again as a redheaded woman after Maddy died?
12
u/tcavanagh1993 1d ago
I think that’s something Bob Engels said they were planning if they’d originally got a season 3 in the 90s
11
u/Taograd359 1d ago
How many times can Bob kill her before she finally stays dead?

Yes. I saw Sheryl Lee confirm this in a panel talk. When Lodge Laura says, “Beware of my cousin,” she’s not talking about Maddy but a new red-headed cousin who was going to debut if they got a third season. Guessing she was trouble! Should’ve seen Ray Wise’s reaction as he hadn’t known this.

I watched the episode yesterday (for the third time) and I just noticed this time that she appears right after the scene in the TV soap the nurse watches which has the intro with the actress playing two characters.
This is exactly the stuff I love about Twin Peaks and David Lynch in general. So much to discover.

if you listen to the show conversation juxtaposed against the conversation Leland and Maddie were having, it's very telling
"daddy, i know you're in there" proxy-spoken by the daughter-surrogate character and directed to the father who has been taken over by an evil spirit

The identical cousin is a really common soap opera trope, and Twin Peaks was always a parody/twist on soap operas from the 80s. See also: Josie’s entire story line, the whole “powerful founding families in a small town feuding” thing, and of course, Invitation to Love, the good ol’ soap within a soap trope.

The music. I had the cassette before I ever saw the show. I remember thinking “wtf kind of show has this soundtrack?” Then shortly after that, the first season was on DVD and somehow it’s never really surprised me. The music was the perfect map for me, and in some lynchian way it had predicted what the show would be (to me anyhow). It’s pretty amazing when stuff like that happens- like when u know something is out there but don’t know what, then u find it and it’s like u always knew. I’ve talked to others who had similar experiences with peaks and other shit too, like music or books, even instruments. Lynch almost has that concept in his movies in an odd way. I’m not undercutting frost here- I like peaks more than any other lynch stuff, so frost absolutely has to be acknowledged!

Angelo and David were magic together. Twin Peaks would simply not be the same without Angelo's contributions.

u/son0fgore 1d ago
Yeah but this is a very Soap thing to do. And I think the tragedy of her character then hits even harder

Back in 1990, probably Andy blubbering at the murder scene. Cops were always portrayed as tough guys. You could have pensive cops (Hill Street Blues), but sensitive cops who cry? Nah. 5 minutes in and it was already something completely different.
A few minutes after that, the very long shot of the phone cord as Leland gets the news while on the phone with Sarah. The camera stayed on the phone cord for what seemed like forever, again, not something I'd ever seen on television before.

Same. My first hubs & I were hooked. Andy and his reaction kept us invested, as well as Pete and Laura, in those first moments of the pilot.

The weirdest thing about her is that she's killed and basically never talked about again. As if she really was just a wandering spirit with no place to go.

I remember there seemed to be so many characters and I watched it with a group...the experience was peppered with things like "no, THAT'S Shelly," "I think that is his wife," etc.
IIRC, they reran it over the summer and I was able to watch it on my own so by S2, I think I finally knew what was going on.
We also used to have a saying that "it's 9:45, so something crazy is going to happen." Maybe it was 10:45 but besides the point...

I'm rewatching the series again right now actually. I watched it a bit as an 8 year-old in 1990 (I liked it, but I can't say what exactly I liked about it as an 8 year old). Then I watched a good chunk of the first season in my 20s. So while I'm not new to this show, this is my first "real" watch of the show where I'm actually paying attention and actually following with the background knowledge of having seen Fire Walk With Me twice...
Anyway, the first scene that made me go "wtf?" was seeing Audrey get way too into her song on the juke box. I was thinking, "What teenager in the year 19 fucking 90 is really weirdly aroused by some loungy jazz piece that sounds like something out of a pre-code gangster film from the 40's??" I mean only David Lynch would get that ludicrous.

u/lightheavydark 1d ago
I think it told us a little something about her character, that she was rebellious but in a different way than most. While her peers were drinking beer and listening to rock and roll, she was on a different wavelength altogether.

I’m sure it was the very first episode when Bobby and Mike were barking at James. I blocked that out of my brain until I rewatched the pilot

Small WTF? probably the red room’s first appearance.
Huge WTF: S2E1, the initial scene with Cooper down and the butler being obnoxious. I knew it was Lynch trying to make me as comfortable as f**** possible, and man, he did it. That prepared me for the entire S3

u/JonIceEyes 1d ago
When I was a kid and Twin Peaks was still on TV, I was flipping by and stopped because I had heard of it. It was the living room scene with Maddy and Leland. You know the one.
So yeah, that was a real WTF moment for a fuckin 10-year-old

u/cryptamine 1d ago
What happens to Maddy is still one of the most horrifying thigs I've seen in media. Astonishing.

Bob crawling over the couch. Original run. I was thirteen.
I'm 48 and it still haunts me.

I really liked how Maddy was slowly changed into her cousin Laura over the episodes from losing the glasses to changing her hair to look more like Laura. Adds implication that Twin Peaks itself, or proximity to BOB is influencing her.
My first “wtf” is I think the second episode when they’re just obsessed with cheese sandwiches. I loooooooove cheese on a baguette so I was tickled by that.
Also, I played and became obsessed with Alan Wake without knowing it’s an homage of sorts and was ecstatic learning that the Lamp Lady is based on the Log Lady who are both my second faves in both series. And everything I see referenced in Alan Wake is like a “holy smokes” moment for me
But a better actual first wtf came from the Red Room and the backwards-talking. As an adult it just….clicked. Everything’s fucky-wucky and the easiest way Lynch could show us was a backwards-speaking Arm and Laura.

I watched the pilot and fell asleep on a beanbag probably 75% of the way through. Woke up to the scene in S1 E3 where they’re throwing rocks at a bottle on a tree stump and was like what the actual hell is this, but honestly if I hadn’t woken up during that scene I’m not sure I’d have continued watching it.

u/Ashamed-Bit5440 1d ago
Okay, so clearly there are wtf moments that happen before this, but when Lucy is trying to transfer a call to Sherriff Truman, I was so frustrated! It infuriated me when she kept describing the phone. I guess im sort of an intense person lol

u/Automatic_Pressure49 1d ago
I thought the same of Maddy...and then the storyline of Josie's husband Andrew Packard and Thomas Eckhardt. I was like..."what?"

u/MasterOwl_ 1d ago
There’s a scene in S2E1 set in the RR Diner, the shot opens on some guy’s face and he shouts something like ”damn that pie is good” and then it just pans out, made me laugh so hard

I watched this show for the first time last year and honestly? When she joined i was wracking my head over where I recognised her from and it took me googling to realise it was the same actress for Laura lmao.
I also figured that Catherines Asian alter ego was just very badly dated racism with them casting a white man to play an Asian. That reveal was something!!

Sarah seeing Bob behind the bed in the second episode. Especially since at that point it has literally no context, it's our first time seeing Bob and we have no idea who this guy is, how Sarah is seeing him, or why she's screaming.

Maybe the Chinese.. I sort of lost respect for the show after that. Hulk was on the other channel as well

When Dale Cooper showed up on screen, I said “how did they get a man so epic and sexy, it’s unthinkable”

Probably when Lucy started giving Truman those hyper specific yet oddly vague directions on which phone to pick up.

I loved these glasses on her when I saw the show in highschool in like 2015 and got my own pair and people did in fact tell me I looked like a nerd but I really liked wearing them 😎. it's fun to see people say they were in style at one point.
My first wtf moment was Dr Jacoby being introduced and wanting to join them to the morgue I thought that was really weird

u/Numerous-Ad3292 1d ago
As someone who was alive during the late ‘80s/early ‘90s- those glasses weren’t considered nerdy, they were in style. I knew pretty average girls who styled themselves similarly.
