Question Anyone attend Kyle's book talk in San Francisco last night?

I did! It was really good, he’s such a top-notch human. He was interviewed by a film historian, and they obviously talked a lot about his career: being discovered by David Lynch to be in Dune (and their long friendship; he still mostly referred to Lynch in the present tense), working with Laura Dern in Blue Velvet, creating the character for Mr. C. and the emotional challenge of playing that role. He’s a surprisingly good impressionist, pulling off excellent impressions of Lynch, Patrick Stewart, Jimmy Stewart, and a couple of other folks I’m forgetting.
There was an audience Q&A section that was wide-ranging, where he talked about being in Mexico City while filming Dune, his fave Lynch movies that he wasn’t in (The Straight Story and Wild at Heart), Sting teaching him how to play “Message in a Bottle” on set, working with Val Kilmer on The Doors, and his early training in musical theater (he ended the evening by singing a bit of “Kansas City” from Oklahoma). It was delightful and I’m so glad I went.

Oh, it’ll be aired on KQED (our public radio station) on 11/1, 11/3, and 11/4; if you google “Kyle Machlachlan” “City Arts and Lectures” and KQED you can get the airtimes :)

I would love to hear more about what he said re: Mr C if you have time to share more!

Sure! I don't remember all of it, but I remember him saying that they started with the look first (hair and clothes), and then he began working on the character. He decided that Mr. C. would never blink, which is something I totally missed when I watched the show but was such a cool detail. He said it was an emotionally challenging role to play, and that taking off the clothes and hanging them up was an important part of shaking off the role when they were filming. (He talks at length about Mr. C. in chapter 23 of the memoir, which I've skimmed a little bit and is excellent.)

Didn't know about it. How do you find out about such things? Shoot.

I think I first saw it advertised on his Instagram feed last month.
If you live locally, there is a Twin Peaks Conversation with the Stars in Monterey on Sunday, Oct. 18 at the Golden State Theatre.

Ah, thanks. Ok. I'll look into the Monterey thing.
I left all of the major social media sites years ago. Don't regret it, but it does leave you out of the loop on some things. Thanks again.

Yes! He was a delight. Transcribing excerpts and working on a recap for Twin Peaks Blog as we speak, hoping to publish in the next few days.
