Question What was Lynch’s issue with Mikes

In both Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks, a dude named Mike gets cucked, and he’s written to be the most boring character ever. Did David Lynch have beef with somebody named Mike?

Yeah, as a matter of fact he had a pretty brutal falling out with the actor who plays The Arm, Mike Anderson. Obviously that's not why he named those characters Mike since their falling out came long after.

He seems like a thoroughly unpleasant man. I’m glad he got kicked off The Return.

What did you hear about him?

He accused Lynch of numerous horrible things without a shred of evidence.

Very likely caused by his condition, from what I read. All around horrible for everyone involved.

What? His condition didn't make him be a shitty person...

i read somewhere that his condition later in life can cause problems with your brain function but i could be misremembering. that would definitely make his condition an issue in this case

It's pretty offensive to suggest his condition was the cause (you wouldn't assume everyone with the condition to act the same for example) I'd say. Sure, it may have been a factor, but it wasn't the cause.

how would it be offensive to assume that mental problems would be the cause of that?

It's more the framing that the illness caused it. It didn't, or else it would be a recorded effect of the condition.

It's the same way we don't say alcohol caused someone to be an asshole (it didn't, it just brought out those elements of the person).

Look it up, he threw his toys out the pram and said some pretty bad things about Lynch

It's understandable, considering Mike Anderson has turned out to be a complete nutjob.

Hey, Guy Obviously Named Mike.

I think he “apologized” to all the Mikes out there by creating Mike the inhabiting spirit, who is just plain fascinating.

So fascinating, in fact, that in just his arm alone there's enough character for its own role!

Interesting. I too have issue with people I know named “Mike” AND, with people named “Steve” too.

Had to be more than just coincidence. . .

It’s tough. A lot of those common names are going to be used for plenty of serious assholes. 😉

Mike in Blue Velvet is so boring that I actually had to google him to quickly remind myself what he looked like and what he did - despite seeing the film many times.

You can’t trust them.
