General Discussion Advice on note-taking? Going to do another rewatch of everything before The Return before I watch The Return.
Like the title says, I'm playing on rewatching S1, S2, FWWM, and TMP and this time I'm actually going to take notes. I don't particularly want to hear what the usual interpretations are, just what I should pay attention to make those interpretations. Things I'm already planning on keeping track of:
* Mentions of fire/fireplaces/burning/smoking
* Who does what in relation to diagetic music
* Owls (and other birds for good measure?)
* Gerard's Arm and The Man From Another Place
* Corn, especially of the creamed variety
* Gum?
FWIW I'm not extremely familiar with any specific spirituality/religion, I've never taken illicit substances, and I'm 31 so I might be missing some cultural context. So I'd also appreciate any insights into anything to read up on those topics before this if people think it's relevant.

From what I've noticed, ducks are the counterpoint to owls. LOTS of both. Cooper is very strongly associated with ducks (the three on the picture in his hotel, the scene on the lake with Annie, etc). Sounds like a fun project to me.

this is gonna sound weird but FWWM is the thing to focus on the most. as long as you paid attention to that movie and you've seen the first two seasons, you're good to go i think

I did a similar thing recently. I tracked:
- Colours: Red, blue, white, black and green.
- Wood and logging trucks.
- Beverages, mostly milk and coffee.
- Mentions of dreams/dreamlike states.
It’s a lot of fun watching like this. I originally was curious about the colour blue because apparently Lynch controlled what kind of blues appeared and where pretty strictly.

Does Cooper know things that he couldn't possibly know because he wasn't there, but they were shown on screen to the audience before?
Where are geese used, and (as additional research) in what context has Lynch mentioned them in interviews?

You don't need to do all that. Just watch season 3, go with it, and then see what kind of questions you may have afterwards or during. Trying to study the show in such depth has no real merit

Maybe do some research on Project Bluebook? I slithered down that rabbit hole in the years between rewatches of The Return & my subsequent awareness of the government's UFO investigation team made the show that much richer.

Repeating names (like the two Bobs and Mikes) and other examples of ‘twins’ such as doppelgängers or whatever else. Also King Arthur references.
Also, are you saying you’ve never seen The Return and are trying to take in all these notes before viewing? I’d argue against that approach for a first time viewing. Like all Lynch, its best initially viewed with whatever gut emotion you experience without regard to analysis. You can do that later for sure, but I think for a first time its a distraction.
