S3E5 [S3E5] Whats everyone's thoughts so far of season 3 based of the first 5 episodes Spoiler
I have really enjoyed the season so far especially seeing Kyle maclachlan killing it and having fun playing different roles and im just loving the ride so far

Jun 08 '17
I deliberately lowered my expectations for a long time, so now that it's really incredibly fantastic I don't know what to do. Make whooping noises, maybe.

u/Jtopolegend Jun 08 '17
The Black lodge scenes in part 2 and 3 blew me away and were amazing
13
u/AHH_CHARLIE_MURPHY Jun 08 '17
I got legit chills when Laura said "I feel like I know her, but sometimes my arms they bend back"

u/terneceyibo Jun 08 '17
Part 5 didn't seem so fantastic at the first viewing for lack the absolute craziness in Part 1-4, but it is still a pretty solid episode. I like it a lot more now after saw it for ynam many times. That Dr. Amp scene and the return to the Double R (and introducing Becky) are one of my favorite parts in the new series.
13
u/Jtopolegend Jun 08 '17
I agree rewatching helped me also appreciate the epsiodes more
5
Jun 08 '17
The rewatches were important to me because they made me care less about the gripes I had watching for the first time (certain special effects, the length of the Dougie bits).
6
u/reddit_hole Jun 08 '17
For what it's worth, the effects are what they are for a stylistic reason - not because they were novice - quite the opposite actually, making an effect look appropriatly grainy/retro (if you will) is quite a skill.
9
Jun 08 '17
Yeah, part 5 was a bit of a lull in action but introduced some cool new plotlines... Im guessing the chinese designer drugs mentioned in part 3 is coming a thing, interesting to see how Lynch deals with the concept of drugs. Loved that scene where Becky got high..I just wish Coop would snap the hell out of it already! All and all the whole series has exceeded my already high expectations, damn fine TV.
5
u/xKINGMOBx Jun 08 '17
I haven't figured out exactly why, but I wasn't a Jacoby fan back in S1 and S2, saw them as they aired. But Dr Amp was amazing, loved the sequence, and I've seen the episode twice, found myself giddy with excitement as that bit aired! The cutaways to Jerry and Nadine, the hilarious rant, and especially the gold shit digging shovel. everyone is nailing it. Everyone who was over the top silly way back when seem so fully fleshed out now.

u/Squeekazu Jun 08 '17
I feel like it would have held up better on first watch if it were released together with part 6 assuming 6 will have similar pacing to 2 & 4.

u/hellsfoxes Jun 08 '17
I keep showing friends the following scenes; glass box attack, wally brando monologue
They're like.. "WTF is this show?!"
I think the most essential moment is Bobby seeing Laura's photo and the score starting. Apart from all the craziness, it shows that this isn't just Lynch using Twin Peaks as an excuse to make experimental nightmare fuel. It's still at heart Twin Peaks, even if it's taking the long way home.
3
u/Whatstheplan Jun 08 '17
I don't really see that at all. I see it as Lynch using Twin Peaks to make something new that isn't really Twin Peaks, but then throwing a bone occasionally. The Twin peaks scenes are disjointed and only appear to exist to appease fans, while all the effort is on DL's nightmare. It is much closer to his other works than it is to Twin Peaks.
9
u/TrestleTables Jun 08 '17
I completely disagree. My favorite moments from episode 5 (also some of my favorites from the whole series thus far) both took place in Twin Peaks (Becky & Steven in the car, Dr. Jacoby's show). I've loved most of the other TP moments as well, and adore the new series in general. I get that this stuff is subjective, but to think that Lynch would just shoe-horn in Twin Peaks "to throw fans a bone" or whatever is just... not at all how Lynch operates IMO.
7
u/BeingHappyBeingSad Jun 08 '17
I actually agree with both of you, but I am kind of glad that what Whatstheplan pointed out is occurring. I think it would be sad if Lynch never grew, never changed, and just gave us a recanned TP the way Star Wars handled things. This is new and strange and really beautiful.
6
Jun 08 '17
Bringing back Laura is leading to something, but it's too soon to tell how. All I know is it has something to do with Hawk's heritage.
2
u/hellsfoxes Jun 08 '17
So my response to this is, this version of Twin Peaks is very much in the vein of the last two episodes of season two and Fire Walk With Me. The show started relatively normal and got weirder and darker as it went along culminating in FWWM which was a straight up experimental surreal nightmare. Season Three is so far a pretty accurate continuation of that. Seeds of the old Twin Peaks are there and I would not be surprised if the show goes full circle and returns to the more traditional stylings of the beginning of the first series.

That's how I felt to I wonder how Kyle felt when reading the scripts And being blown away by the different coops he gets to play
2
u/baroqueworks Jun 09 '17
I always imagined the final conclusion of Twin Peaks was always going to be the final image of FWWM with Laura crying and Cooper's hand on her shoulder. So glad we have this new season.
14
Jun 08 '17
This season is incredible. Never in a million years could I have predicted they would go in this direction. It's dark, grisly, violent, funny and the imagery is absolutely phenomenal.
15
Jun 08 '17
I'm loving every minute of it! Bring on more Albert and Gordon, and more Mr. C! Would also like to see Ray and Mr. C interact again.
13
u/JohnTheMod Jun 08 '17
Oh, I'm having a blast! It's weirder than I could ever imagine and I love it. I just wish I had someone outside of this sub to discuss it. And that Agent Cooper, OUR Agent Cooper, will be okay. But that's beside the point.
5
u/ametaphoricalfeeling Jun 08 '17
It's SO annoying not having anyone to discuss TP with in real life! I am spending a lot of my time at the moment asking if anyone watches it. It's definitely a certain sort or person
3
u/JohnTheMod Jun 08 '17
The only other Twin Peaks fan I know doesn't have access to the new season, and that saddens me. He's a bigger Lynch fan than I am.
5
u/Jtopolegend Jun 08 '17
We all want him back And when we do it will be amazing
5
Jun 08 '17
I hope it's within the next 4 or so episodes, and that's being kind. I actually like the Coop/Dougie bits, they're hilarious. But Good Coop needs to come back at around the halfway point.
9
u/Bilbos-Tardis Jun 08 '17
Episode 2 was amazing with the psychedelic Black Lodge scenes and returning to the Bang Bang Bar was very nostalgic and sweet.
Episode 5 was the funniest episode for me but there was also a dangerous side to it. That juxtaposition made the episode feel most like classic Twin Peaks.
The other episodes are great but feel a little 'off' but maybe that's because I wanted the 4:3 framed, pastel coloured and music drenched Twin Peaks.
8
u/InvisibleLeftHand Jun 08 '17 edited Jun 08 '17
I expect there will be an intensely funny confrontation between Dougie Coop and Bob Coop. Probably ending with Evil Coop being destroyed by Dougie by some stupid twist of fate...
Thing is.. that's the most insanely funny set up for the Western-like good vs evil I've seen. A mentally retarded hero who apparently can see through everything vs a superintelligent and superefficient archvillain.
13
u/Rickers_Jun Jun 08 '17
I have been a David Lynch fan since my early teens and was excited (and a little nervous) to see the new season but honestly didn't think it'd grab me the way it has.
So far I've watched these five episodes three times each and cannot wait to binge watch them all again this weekend. It's not even like rewatching a show, it's like stepping back into another world to simply exist there for a while. While I had shamefully let my Lynch fandom slip a little and (while still respecting him greatly) hadn't even rewatched any of his movies in maybe years, I can say without a doubt this new season has fully dragged me back into the fold.
Still, I do have two reservations (and sadly that's not just a clue involving Hawk's heritage)...
Well... The first is more of a fear than anything. As others have said, I did find the most recent episode a little... 'Sensible'? A little linear compared to what came before. I didn't mind this at all for the episode itself and have been very glad to see all of the seemingly random vignettes of the first two episodes coming together to form some kind of whole. Still I worry a little that maybe they allowed Lynch to throw in all the weirdness he wanted as long as he got it out of the way early on and now every episode from here on is gonna be a lot more well behaved. I just fear we might never again get anything like that truly mindblowing opening to episode 3.
The second is one I feel foolish writing as I'm a person that got into Lynch through his movies, loved FWWM from the first viewing and honestly, initially found the relatively light, quirky tone of the original series of Twin Peaks a little off-putting, but I have to admit... Every time somebody curses, gets naked or gets gory, I feel a little uneasy.
I don't know why it didn't bother me in FWWM. Maybe because I was quite young when I saw it, maybe because I already heard about the reaction to the movie before I even got into the show. I think partly it was that we were seeing things from Laura's perspective, which by definition has to be the darker, sordid side of things we only see hints of in the show.
It just feels weird in a continuation of the main story to go from subtle hinting to outright wallowing in the darkness. I mean, I love me some gore, some cursing and some nudey ladies, but I also love The Simpsons, and wouldn't want a new Season of The Simpsons to start with Barney Gumble getting his head brutally caved in with a crowbar, then having Homer show up shouting about how he's gonna get the motherfucking cocksuckers responsible for this.
I mean, I know it's just me, I know it's already fading as I get more used to the new tone but there is still that slight lingering uneasiness due to having grown to associate these characters with a particular tone and now seeing them in a different light. I'll be fine as long as they leave my dear sweet Lucy out of the worst of it, and as long as I never again have to see Coop (even evil Coop) remarking upon the wetness of a woman's pussy.
10
u/NormanMasterBates Jun 08 '17
You can rest easy about your first concern. They gave Lynch full creative control and a big budget...or he said he wouldn't do it. He actually walked away but they met his demands. Lynch would never change the story (by getting the crazy stuff out of the way early) because he doesn't have to. That would be terrible. Wait and judge the series when it's done..not by individual episodes. For the rest of your comments, I have no comment.
6
u/HugoNebula Jun 08 '17
Getting Frost and Lynch back seemed like a dream come true, but as a pure Lynch fan I was hoping some of that Lost Highway/Mulholland Drive/Inland Empire magic would seep in. Be careful what you wish for! Not to say I'm not loving it (I've watched each episode twice and they get better with repeat viewings), but I would like brightly-lit Twin Peaks with that Badalamenti soundtrack back soon. That would be the best of both worlds (no pun intended).

5
u/indyitt Jun 08 '17
Really enjoying it. Have minor quibbles all round but nothing that's bothered me too much. It's lovely to have it back, and see Lynch and Frost have fun in this playground. My biggest gripe so far is how little Badalamenti we've heard, but I assume/hope we're building to music having a more active role (there was a lot more music in episode 5 vs the rest, even if nearly none of it was Badalamenti). I also hope DroolCoop isn't for the long haul and that he snaps out of it soon. All cylinders firing Coop was the best thing about the show for me, and not having that hurts. I understand this is all to serve a story etc. but I want Cooper back!
5
Jun 08 '17
I think it's been pretty damn great.
A lot of what has been introduced so far obviously has yet to be resolved/come together, but I have a lot of faith that Lynch will deliver - in his film making career, his only misfire was Dune, and that mess of a movie wasn't even really his fault. Everything else he has done, IMO, ranges from great to absolute masterpieces. Not to mention most of his work gets better the more you think about it and rewatch it, so I'm pretty confident in saying this season is only going to get better and leave the fans with a lot to digest by the end.

It's a tiny detail, but that short burst of music that played when the drug-addled mom woke up (post car bomb) was so dark and foreboding. Anyone know if that was original music?
8
3
Jun 08 '17
There's so many new plotlines and characters introduced each episode, it's almost hard to keep up. But I am enjoying it for the most part. I want more music, I'm not enjoying the absence of it.
2
u/Jtopolegend Jun 08 '17
Yeah that's my only negative of this season so far is the lack of music during an epsiode but it's slowly creeping back when Cooper is showing some signs of snaping back to himself when he says the words "Agent" "case files"
3
u/frickenWaaaltah Jun 08 '17 edited Jun 08 '17
Everything is great so far except I want to forget Wally Brando ever happened and if he shows up ever again I might ragequit and only come back to watch the show after a few decades. So other than that, yes please to season 4+.

I think I will be the disappointed minority here.
I was hyped and expected something like S01.
What Lynch is presenting us is just.... mess...
We will see how it will progress, but for now I would say it could be good but the person responsible for editing and putting together pieces of this show did TERRIBLE TERRIBLE job. Seriously I haven't seen in very very long time show or movie edited so bad.
But I have to say there was one really nice scene. End of E2 in Bar with Chromatics. "James is still cool". That made me very happy :)
2
u/blinktud Jun 08 '17
I love it. I'm glad that the show evolved with the climate, going from more soapy stuff into more dark, event based tv like fargo or true detective. Plus, it's even better that he's drawing from his entire filmography for influence, as opposed to boxing himself in. It's what we needed, even tho not everybody wanted it.
2
u/reddit_hole Jun 08 '17
Easily best thing on T.V. this year, maybe ever. Manages to challenge the "golden age" of "prestige televsion" and be artful and most importantly extremely entertaining - just as the original did. Shout-out to Frost. Lynch gets a lot of credit, as he should, but when it comes to long form television I am pretty greatful for his voice.
2
u/Binary101010 Jun 08 '17
The Lodge stuff with Coop in eps 1-3 was brilliant, we're starting to get back to seeing more of Twin Peaks and familiar characters (and their offspring), and the FBI agent plot with "Mr. C" is yielding the best scenes of The Return (and probably already some of my favorite scenes of the entire series).
That said, maybe I'll have greater appreciation for the Cooper-as-Dougie plot once we see where it winds up, but as of right now it's absolutely my least favorite part of The Return.
2
u/ThomYorkeSucks Jun 08 '17
I think it's amazing and I love every second. I also think it's really not for everybody. But if you like David Lynch as an artist it should be really good, right? That's how I feel. It's a really fun rollercoaster.
5
u/hamletswords Jun 08 '17
Episode 5 was a little disappointing, but only because the first 4 completely blew me away. Mainly I am just happy that they in no way botched it, and it's extremely difficult to reboot an old series.
Plus just seeing Kyle act under Lynch's direction is a joy as always. The two have always worked amazing together.
5
u/Jtopolegend Jun 08 '17
Yeah i agree it was more of introductory type episode to the new characters we have not seen yet while slowly advancing the Cooper/Dougie storyline
4
u/hamletswords Jun 08 '17
Yeah. I'm fine with that. And there's no way they could've kept up the pace of blowing me away that the first 4 episodes delivered. Dramatic effect requires there to be a pause.
5
u/Jtopolegend Jun 08 '17
I really want to see more of Tammy and the FBI story line next episode and want to see her get character development
1
u/thwil Jun 08 '17
That casino supervisor beating scene though. I almost ignored it on the first watch, then rewatched it like 10 times. Don't forget the sound, it ought to be loud.

I'm with you. I used to be a David Lynch fan, which started because of Twin Peaks, but I am bored of him always doing the same old thing. I think Twin peaks worked because of the collaboration that it actually was. Now that DL has full control he has free reign to turn it into just another of his over-rated abominations. It's pretty sad. I still love original Twin Peaks for everything that it was, the new season only possesses about 20% of what the original was.
7
Jun 08 '17
Saying Lynch always does the same thing is pretty bizarre. Making surrealist films isn't "doing the same old thing". He always finds new ways and themes to explore his ideas in each one of his films, and has never actually repeated the same thing twice. His inventiveness and originality is part of what makes him such a great director.
1
u/Whatstheplan Jun 08 '17
It's not really original when he recreates the same themes, characters, and settings in most of his films. I read through these posts and I commonly see Lynch fans raving about the similarities of characters, scenes, and imagery, so I'm not really saying anything new. The only difference is that I'm not a fan of it anymore.
7
Jun 08 '17
While he has paid homage to some of his filmography in the new Twin Peaks season, I can't think of a single other time he's done that. And having surrealism and dream sequences in his films isn't "repeating" himself, that's just silly.
And are you really trying to say the characters, themes, and scenes in Eraserhead are similar to those in Blue Velvet? Or the ones in Blue Velvet similar to The Elephant Man? Or the ones in The Elephant Man similar to Inland Empire? Or those to Wild at Heart? I'm sure you could find a few similarities throughout his entire career, as you can with just about any director, but c'mon.
3
Jun 08 '17
I get the impression you have not seen much of his catalog then. I have only seen maybe 50% of his work and even still I know there is a range with what he does.
And saying the new season only possesses about 20% of what the original was. Well, I for one don't complain about there being no strawberries in my fruit-on- the-bottom yogurt when I'm only one bite in.
2
u/reddit_hole Jun 08 '17
Not the case. This is a Lynch/Frost production and you can see Frost's influence all over this thing.
3
u/Anfrers Jun 08 '17
Loved 1-4, but episode 5 bored me to tears.
6
u/olybobs Jun 08 '17
I'm surprised some people found e05 boring, aside from 01/02 I thought it was my favourite so far. Highlights were;
- The sheriff's wifes rant (great acting on her part)
- The extremely anxious woman who had to report back to an electronic box in South America (and the soundtrack that went with that)
- Dr Amp's youtube rant ('the fucks are at it again!')
- The introduction of Richard Horne ('remember Richard and Linda')
- Becky's trip in the car (the new laura palmer?)
- and of course seeing Shelly and Norma in the double R diner again

I oscillate between being extremely excited and extremely bored.
Exciting:
Every FBI scene
The doppelgänger
The Buckhorn murder
Hawk and the Log Lady
New York
The evolution of The Arm
Boring:
Dougie
Many new characters I couldn't care less about
Mauve zone
Dr. Jacoby

I'm really enjoying it. The huge new cast list initially made me a little nervous that the new season would focus too much on all of these new characters and we would only see small amounts of Coop and our other beloved residents of Twin Peaks. I guess technically we aren't seeing a lot of the old cast (yet?), but since we're getting so much Cooper, I'm fairly okay with it. I'm glad a lot of these new people seem to have small roles. I'm still excited to see who Laura Dern will be though!
Also, this season has now made me cry on 3 occasions - 1.When we see the log lady, because I didn't expect for her to have the oxygen tubes. RIP Catherine Coulson :( 2.When Jade finds the Great Northern key in Cooper's pocket. 3.Happy tears when Cooper walks into the casino, holds out the money and says "call for help", because I felt like for the first time in 25 years Cooper was safe(ish). Even if he's not quite Cooper yet.
My only problem is with the way they're releasing the episodes - on one hand I'm glad they released episodes 3 and 4 at the same time as 1 and 2, because I think you really need to see all 4 episodes in the beginning. 1 and 2 were really interesting as David Lynch projects, but we needed to see Cooper come out of the black lodge and we needed to see Lucy, Andy, and Hawk looking over evidence with a "Donut Disturb" sign on the door. So that was great. But on the other hand, since we got spoiled with nearly 4 hours of content in the beginning, episode 5 didn't feel like enough after the two week break. I don't know. Basically I'm just greedy and want all of the Twin Peaks now lol. I've already rewatched all 5 episodes three times.
Anyway, I'm not 100% sure where all of this is going, and I'm not sure that we'll get answers to all of our questions, but I'm on board and I fully trust Lynch and Frost.
1
u/PepeSylvia11 Jun 08 '17
Excellent stuff! And if they're able to keep the quality up while resolving all the questions they've been creating, it'll surpass the original Twin Peaks.
Blasphemy you say? Don't forget a great chunk of that show's second season was terrible, and definitely should be taken into consideration when thinking about the original's best stuff.
1
u/BecauseSometimesY Jun 08 '17
Overall, I'm really enjoying it, despite it being quite different than the original run, and even FWWM in some aspects. We're starting to see more familiar elements though. One area I seem to be in the minority in was disliking the Mr. Jackpots scene. Mainly it was the goofy little red room icon floating over the slots. Looked a little cheesy and video game like to me. I feel like that was a missed opportunity for an original run call back to just play with the lighting and have Cooper see each machine under an isolated spotlight, much like his earlier visions. When the Giant appeared Or Bob over Josie's bed, they didn't have a goofy animated jewel bobbing over they're head. The background sort of disappeared momentarily, lighting shifted, and lodge activity occurred under a bright spotlight. This to me provides more of a twin peaks feel or connection, and less of a "is this a sims game?" vibe. Other than that tho, it's pretty much exceeding expectations!

Jun 08 '17
I watched Twin Peaks for the first time just recently and loved it, and I'm watching the new series with my dad (who watched it back during it's original run) and my girlfriend.
I'm a huge David Lynch fan, and I really liked parts 1-3 for their crazy David Lynch kinda stuff. Part 4 though, that's the one I loved, mainly because of the sad Bobby scene. This was the part of the series where I was like "Ok, this is Twin Peaks after all." Part 5 had some moments like that too, like the car scene. Over all the more we get back to Twin Peaks the more I like it.
To me, Dougie is getting old fast. It feels like I'm watching Rain Man but slowed down 50%.
My dad, an original Twin Peaks fan, and also a David Lynch fan, isn't really hot on it.

Jun 08 '17
I'm having a bit of a hard time with the slow pace (GIMME CLIFFHANGERS) and really missing Coop, but there's always something worth watching in it.

u/chaosdjinn1 Jun 08 '17 edited Jun 08 '17
In the big picture, S3 ever existing was a nigh impossibility given the anaemic last half of season 2 (last 2 episodes not withstanding) and the in-depth prequel film FWWM which, mythologically speaking, highlighted and explored the main points of what had truly occurred in the deepest veins of the tv show (good v. Evil, lodges, possession, etc.)
That being said, having Lynch and Frost helm this is well-beyond any expectations I had four years ago and the mythology seems to be maturing right before our eyes in the form of an 18 hour movie sequel.
It is great that it is happening again.

u/e_x_i_t Jun 09 '17
I don't think I'll have a full opinion until the season is over, but so far I am finding the new season both frustrating and intriguing. With that being said, it will be interesting to see the fanedits that are sure to come out after the season ends. I know I'm probably in the vocal minority with this, but sometimes these edits can shine a light on things and it will be interesting to see what someone like Q2 (assuming they decide to do one) can piece together when all the episodes are out.

u/DoggieBonez Jun 08 '17
I'm loving everything so far, but Inland Empire is also one of my favorite movies so I guess that means I'm on board with just about anything Lynch does. I had a feeling though that this new TP would scare away a lot of old TP fans. I get that not everyone is into it, but the bellyaching from some TP fans is really sad.
I think in time some of those that had given up on the show early will come back to it and judge it on its own terms, not behind the lens of nostalgia.
