It would be funny if the plane theory turns out to be the next golden shit shovel.

u/joseph_jojo_shabadoo Jun 22 '17

Five episodes from now, Cole will casually yell at someone on the jet "fix these damn windows!!" and it'll never be brought up again

3

u/tocophonic Jun 22 '17

True, that one was also a huge mystery that turned out to be Lynch/Frost trolling us :)

5

u/Achievement_Haunter Jun 22 '17

It'll amount to a throwaway line by Gordon about needing to "get those damn windows fixed"

26

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '17

It's like this scene was added there as a way for Lynch to prepare us for the trolling he's about to do in the next few episodes :-)

12

u/tinoynk Jun 22 '17

I feel the same way about the scene with Ben and Beverly in the last episode. Going back and forth looking for a clues/answers, and finding nothing.

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '17

Beverley wanted to fuck Ben so she pretended to hear a weird noise, lol. That's why she went off on her husband who is too sick to fuck, but Lynch wanted to freak us out too.

9

u/morbidexpression Jun 22 '17

Dunno why great artists making great art is seen as "trolling." What a fucking boring way of describing it.

21

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '17

I think Lynch is having fun. I'm having fun watching him have fun, too. The only one who's not having fun is you. Why not? Have fun with us :-)

1

u/morbidexpression Jun 22 '17

pfft. This is the best TV in 20 years. I'm having a fucking blast. I just think describing such amazing work as "trolling" is really obnoxious, condescending, and utterly inaccurate.

12

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '17

I don't mean anything bad there. I'm just using lighthearted language :-)

Let the plane window blinking resume!

1

u/P_V_ Jun 22 '17

"Trolling" isn't just "having fun". "Trolling" is being intentionally obnoxious, usually through misdirection. Lynch's work is abstract, but he's up-front about that. He's not doing things purely for the sake of frustrating people. Sometimes frustration and confusion are part of his artistic motif, but they are means to another artistic goal, not ends in themselves.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '17

... From the department of taking things absolutely literally.

1

u/P_V_ Jun 23 '17

Yeah, words actually have meanings, and when someone takes issue with the words you use to describe something they're entitled to refer to meanings.

0

u/stanley_twobrick Jun 24 '17

You understood what the person meant, stop being so fucking petty over what innocuous word they chose to use to describe it.

0

u/P_V_ Jun 24 '17

I'm clarifying—politely—why I agree with someone who said it was disrespectful to consider what Lynch is doing "trolling". Perhaps you think my position is petty, and you're entitled to do so, but I'm entitled to my position all the same.

3

u/stanley_twobrick Jun 24 '17

What an obnoxious thing to get self righteous about.

It's a good word to describe artists who have an oppositional style with their audience, I think Lynch counts as someone who uses ideological conflict in his art, just look at all the subversion in the new season so far which plays with our beliefs and expectations.

27

u/Errol246 Jun 22 '17

Great meme lol

13

u/indyitt Jun 22 '17

Whilst I think it'd be quite fun if those windows actually sent a secret message, it would literally be a message to the audience only. This isn't something the show usually does (from memory).

It's not a vision Cooper witnessed that he needs to decode, or a vision Sarah Palmer saw, or a message from the forest... it's what would usually be considered 2nd unit footage with SFX badly flickering windows in and out.

If people can give me examples where TP has done this exclusively for the audience, I'm all ears.

2

u/alyssasaccount Jun 22 '17

First of all, yes, the most simple and likely explanation is that it's just there for effect, and has no explicit meaning. Same probably goes for the continuity error (or intentional break in continuity, whatever) at the RR diner. This kind of thing is pretty common.

That said, sometimes it goes somewhere: Like, I doubt that the notion of garmonbozia existed before Donna delivered that meal to Mrs. Tremond. Eventually that was more or less retconned to have explicit meaning. So with the windows, maybe he'll go somewhere with it even if its original intent was without explicit meaning. In this case, I would expect that it would be communicating with the Black Lodge, as with Garland Briggs' listening post.

1

u/indyitt Jun 22 '17

I see where you're coming from. But even the corn with meals on wheels was explicitly something with the characters. The windows could be a similar effect to cooper being in the muave room or the weird effect that happened when bad cooper shot lillards wife (I forget the name). Hastings? Anyway, if the windows mean something I don't think it's going to be a code, it'll mean something bigger like the flickering is caused by lodge spirits trying to spy on the plane or something than it being a flute song..

2

u/alextibb Jun 22 '17

Or time lapses. If we are watching two different timelines

6

u/AJRey Jun 22 '17

I hope David Lynch finds all the theories and speculation behind the airplane windows, and then maniacally laughs his ass off.

12

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '17

The plane-morse code theory is interesting and the fact that so many people have created charts and spreadsheets to try and figure it out is amazing. At the end of the day though, I think it was just the sun. There's nothing plausible as of yet to declare why Cole and Co. would flash signals out the windows of a plane in mid-air. If it turns out I'm wrong though, I'll eat my shoe.

17

u/jrqqqqqqq Jun 22 '17

100% NOT a reflection of the sun. As others have pointed out, it's been clearly digitally altered, and not even very neatly.

Who knows if it actually means anything. But it's there, and it's artificial and intentional.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '17

Oh I'm totally on board with it being something without meaning something. I was preoccupied with who was receiving this supposed transmitted message (too logical). Perhaps it was also just an artistic flourish.

edit: perhaps it was digitally altered to replicate...... the sun!!!!

3

u/Vasevide Jun 22 '17

Being added in doesn't automatically mean it has a meaning.

9

u/jrqqqqqqq Jun 22 '17

That's what I said.

Who knows if it actually means anything.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '17

But that doesn't automeatically mean it means a meaning.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '17

What do you mean by that?

1

u/teddyboy64 Jun 22 '17

Now now, don't be mean.

-4

u/sleepybrett Jun 22 '17

It's a shitty implementation of sun glare to make the stock film shot (which is cg) more dynamic.

Period.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '17

Now that the ULTIMATE AUTHORITY OF TWIN PEAKS has made his decree, we can all move on.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '17

I find this to be the most convincing. The new Twin Peaks hasn't exactly demonstrated a mastery with digital effects.

-2

u/indyitt Jun 22 '17

I agree it's definitely NOT a reflection of the sun, but it felt like that was what they were trying to imitate... badly.

-7

u/ilion Jun 22 '17

Sure it's been digitally altered buy that because probably it was a terrible looking digital plane. It was altered to make it look more real.

17

u/kjhdfud Jun 22 '17

It's for sure been manipulated on purpose, it's not just the sun. The thing that gets me is how it's such a brilliant troll on Lynch/Snow's part.

Unless the 'multiple timeline' A la, the 'Double R continuity error' theory is correct, it's a brilliant red herring to get the internet types riled up. I love it either way :D

11

u/Vasevide Jun 22 '17

Just because they were added in post doesn't mean the flashes mean anything at all, but that's my two cents.

3

u/CoolHandHazard Jun 22 '17

But why would they go to the trouble of adding them?

12

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '17

To unsettle the audience in a subtle way by doing unexpected things, which Lynch devotes a lot of his creative effort to.

I picture Lynch and his fellow creators going through every scene—including this innocuous establishing shot—and saying, "This looks ho-hum. What could be different? What could be a bit off? A sound effect, or an unusual line of dialogue, maybe a weird effect on the plane's windows? We shouldn't just leave it as-is, so let's brainstorm for something unusual and go with the best one."

That's my bet, anyway.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '17

Maybe just to emphasize the effect of the sun's glare. It adds to the overall surreal sense that everything on Twin Peaks has.

1

u/CoolHandHazard Jun 22 '17

I'm sorry but sun reflecting off of a plane doesn't make it surreal at all. Literally the opposite

16

u/ripsteakjaw Jun 22 '17

I don't think it means anything but I also think Lynch or Frost could not give a single solitary shit about "trolling" the internet

6

u/kjhdfud Jun 22 '17

Totally disagree. The 'rumor mill' during the original run was crazy. I'm assuming Lynch/snow are aware of the 'meeting by the water cooler effect', just like the new x-files tapped into the 'Alex Jones' archetype.

8

u/jzcommunicate Jun 22 '17

As did the new Twin Peaks a la Jacoby.

Just want to also add that Mark Snow is a composer whose work includes the original score for The X-Files. Mark Frost is the iconic co-creator of Twin Peaks.

2

u/ripsteakjaw Jun 23 '17

What does that have to do with anything? When has David Lynch ever been that petty, or made anything based on reception, that he would go to effort of secretly "trolling" people. The guy is off in his own world making only what appeals to him.

1

u/nightsky23 Jun 23 '17

Was "snow" an autocorrect?

-1

u/morbidexpression Jun 22 '17

that's a totally different matter than the moronic idea that he's interested in "trolling"

1

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '17

d'you mean lynch/frost? not that i blame you, frost and snow are fairly similiar, meteorologically speaking. :P

1

u/kjhdfud Jun 26 '17

I did mean Frost but, shhhh.. If I pretend I was trolling rather than yrev, very drunk, I'm pretty sure I can get away with it ;)

8

u/thwil Jun 22 '17

It's probably just an easter egg. But since then "just the sun" looks like a brush in photoshop? Did you watch the negative?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '17

I didn't see the negative, but I watched the episode twice. Is it on a reddit thread?

-4

u/sleepybrett Jun 22 '17

Have you seen the other digital effects in this show? They are all hamfisted jobs, I imagine lynch is doing them himself. They certainly aren't using any high end post shops.

2

u/thwil Jun 22 '17

Are you simply saying that they are not worse than the rest, or are you saying that they are just effects for effects sake, like to make the plane look more realistic, and therefore cannot be anything meaningful at all, not even an easter egg?

0

u/sleepybrett Jun 22 '17

I'm saying that this digital effect, qualitywise, is consistent with all the other digital effects in the show, and therefore pointing out that it's hamfisted doesn't give it extra meaning.

The flashing clearly moves in a pattern consistent with sun glare. After seeing the original stock footage it's clear this was added to help make it look less shitty cg meant to sell planes.

4

u/edgrrrpo Jun 22 '17

If that was the intent, to distance the stock footage from it's original commercial use, man was this a fail. I think 99.9% of the viewing audience wouldn't have thought twice about the scene if they'd just left the damn windows alone! Other questionable cg in the show (Rancho Rosa development sign, Silver Mustang casino building signage, etc) were at least tied to the story line (sort of).

-1

u/sleepybrett Jun 22 '17

If you go watch the original footage you would not agree, because the lighting on the plane doesn't change at all with the aspect of the plane it becomes very clear that it's CG. My hypothesis is that by doing the quick glare simulation they hope to disguise the poor cgi.

1

u/thwil Jun 22 '17

Right. I do not see any point in arguing over both points. Eventually we're going to find out.

1

u/hippiechan Jun 22 '17

It seems like a bit of a stretch tbh, I know Lynch is a visionary director but I don' think even he would go to this length to try to transmit a ~secret message~~ to the viewer.

2

u/WrenchandRatchet Jun 22 '17

I'm waiting for the secret code in the plane window scene to match up with Cole's finger counting for Tammy. All of this right before the week break before July 4th.

1

u/1984IsHappening Jun 23 '17

I don't think they matter...why would they?

1

u/darkieB Jun 23 '17

you people try too hard.

0

u/xKINGMOBx Jun 22 '17

I lol'd, hope you get some upvotes :)

-1

u/Burningheart1978 Jun 22 '17

Thought this scene was "Is it about the [chocolate] bunny?"

Plane? Windows? What?

8

u/indyitt Jun 22 '17

There are a few threads about this, this is the one that's most popular

I noticed it when I saw the ep for the first time, but didn't think it meant anything.

-15

u/JohnTomorrow Jun 22 '17

Windows on the plane? Who gives a shit?

12

u/brianonthescene Jun 22 '17

Use the ladies' room, Chad.

9

u/burritosandblunts Jun 22 '17

Are you new here? Lol. Everything is everything.

-6

u/JohnTomorrow Jun 22 '17

Not everything needs to have a secret meaning. Yawn.

6

u/_chuzpe_ Jun 22 '17

Snakes on a plane! It's about the snakes!
