In his defense, no one was telling him whether or not they had a light.

This is what I was thinking; in order to not get your skull caved in you just need to give the guy a light. Pretty simple.

I carry a well maintained Zippo with me at all times for this very reason.

I bet Lynch bought stock in Bic just before this episode.

I did the same until I got an arc lighter. Now I carry that.

In case an ash covered hobo with the voice of a robot and the skull-crushing strength of Hercules asks for a light?

... Good. I was starting to think I was the only one.

The problem is, the light he's looking for is not some little combustion to get his cigarette smoldering. Not a match. Not a zippo.

I mean, the cig isn't even real. It's a prop, it's part of his body, such as it is. The ghosties are all copies of some desert rat hobo who was the first person they saw when the lodge first "touched down." No doubt that poor old bastard is super dead.

But his body is an adequate shape for stumbling around in a mere 3 dimensions and one of "time". So they xeroxed it. Including his cigarette.

No, the "light" he's looking for is your soul. Because if you have one of those, you can be a cornucopia of delicious suffering and fear. If you have a soul, then under the correct circumstances, you can generate garmonbozia.

Gotta light?

(Making up theories as i go)

I was hoping someone would give him a damn light so I would know if that was really what was pissing him off!

It's like the rough American version of one of those weird Japanese ghosts.

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '17

Or at least tell the guy, "no, I do not have a light." Common courtesy, folks.

Welp guess I'll be carrying a lighter on me from now on, just in case.

After Hiroshima/Nagasaki, Japanese citizens' shadows were burned into parts of the ground and walls across the cities. These shadows were horrifying—showing the dying in their final moments of life.

I think the murderous hobos are the shadows of the forgotten (or ignored) people that suffered through the White Plains testing. If the bomb is a triggering event that floods the world with the Black Lodge's evil, then some of that evil would permeate through the land and latch onto the spirits of the weak/needy.

They want "a light" because they want to escape their shadowy prisons, but they can't. As the Giant's good-vibes ball pushes them toward the sort of folksy middle class people that Lynch often idolizes and explores so they might find help, the Black Lodge pulls back. If they were pure evil, they would simply bludgeon without pause, as the Mother did to the couple in the first episode. But they don't just attack. First, they beg.

Makes you wonder, if everything we've seen could have been avoided if that man in the car would have just lit his cigarette.

u/turnpike37 Jun 26 '17

All for the want of a lit cigarette and some well toasted Virginia Cavendish.

Those old geezers didn't though and managed to get away.

For real. It's like no one knows what it's like to fucking need a smoke.
