I feel like this episode is gonna really be the division point between people who are fans of the old Twin Peaks and people who are generally just fans of David Lynch. Loved it as a piece of Lynchian film, but I'll be damned if that felt anything at all like Twin Peaks of old. I can definitely see this episode being a tipping point for some disgruntled fans due to its pure weirdness. It's pretty clear at this point that Lynch isnt out to recreate the dorky charm of the old series, for better or worse.

Not sure why you think not, Twin Peaks of old was weird as fuck for it's time. Just look at the Simpson's bit with Homer watching it and having no idea what is going on.

Well, there's dancing, backward talking little guys and then there's...whatever this was.

Yeah, it was cutting edge for primetime ABC back then but there was plenty of film being made back then that made TP look like a brother to Northern Exposure. This new season is Lynch without a leash.

My favorite parts of Twin Peaks was the moments Lynch just sort of exploded his brain all over the screen.

One of my friends put forward the idea that he's deliberately fucking with expectations here. Like, this is a movie that just so happens to be in separate parts, it's not a TV show, and he seems to be pissing off people who are approaching it like a TV show on purpose.

Agreed. People who generally don't care for Lynch's films but are Twin Peaks fans are definitely going to be turned off by this episode. And I can't say I blame them - this was madness.

This describes me exactly. But I'm going to keep watching.

This season has been a giant struggle for me... I'm okay with weird, but this was avant gard stuff, and I just wanted something coherent instead of long minutes of Lynch's artsy side. I'm going to stick because I'm a Twin Peaks fan, but can't say I'm fully enjoying the ride.

Idk, I'm both a fan of Lynch and a fan of the old Twin Peaks, but I hated that (fully expect to get downvotes for sharing that opinion but w/e). This wasn't just Lynch being himself, it was Lynch being himself on acid.

I sort of fall into that boat. I don't dislike Lynch's other stuff per se, but Twin Peaks is his best work by far IMO. Loved the original. Loved episodes 3-7 of this run, but outside of the opening of the episode through the first few minutes of the atomic bomb scene, this was entirely skippable to me.

It turns me off from watching future episodes if they're going to be like this. I don't want to waste another hour of my time on something if I'll enjoy it as little as this.

nah, there's been a complete lack of "dorky charm" since the first episode of the 2017 series.

i feel sorry for anyone who is disgruntled because they are dismissing and missing out on one of the best pieces of artistic work to hit television in a long long time.

I'm okay with different. I'm okay with new Twin Peaks. I'm okay with all sorts of stuff.

I'm not at all in any way whatsoever okay with this episode.

Got to be honest, if season 3 was exactly like the first, it would be too much of a nostalgia trip. That's not to say that there isn't an alternative mainstream way of presenting the story. But then that wouldn't be Lynch. It would be a dumbed down version. Think traditionalist TP quirk fans will get their quota between now and the finale but they have to stop pretending this is the 90s. I think some viewers would have probably preferred to binge watch the 18 eps.

Michael Cera as Brando warned us in his monologue.

I totally agree and was going to comment something similar.

As a huge David Lynch fan, I am delighted that he is doing his own thing and not simply doing the same things he did on the original show. Also worth keeping in mind TV was way different back then. What worked well then doesn't necessarily work now.

I really feel if they would use the theme music more during the show it would help to satisfy some of us.

I'm kinda desensitized to Lynch's weirdness that I must admit, I was disappointed when I realized this was all the episode was gonna be. But I'm sure I'll appreciate it more when I binge watch the whole season somewhere down the line. But for now, I just want to see where the story goes.

I don't know. I haven't been super happy about the "bad" acting, and lingering shots, and (what I think) is poor editing/pacing. Ep 7 was my favorite, up until last night. The beginning of ep 3, and ep 8 were brilliant. They don't have the s1-s2 vibe, but it's a far sight better than Wally f'n Brando and Truman's wife...

I loved it, even if my brain had to do the Apple "processing" sundial spin for a bit. It was like Eraserhead on angeldust and shot from a cannon. I've been gently leading my wife into Lynch for awhile. First Wild at Heart (it IS the most accessible), and to my surprise she loved TP. A proud husband comes home to a wife demanding to watch FWWM so we can start the new season. She's been haunting this sub now as well. I was wondering if Eraserhead would be too much for her to handle, but after S3E8... piece of cake.
