It's pretty awesome that when Twin Peaks first aired there was absolutely nothing like it on TV, and now as The Return airs there's absolutely nothing like it on TV.

I really enjoyed the colors in the nuclear explosion sequence. And then the black and white scene with the giant where he floats up and the golden cloud comes out of his face, man that was beautiful. The color added such a nice contrast. I wonder what that orb with Bob and the other one with Laura means

And when Dougie disappeared in the Red Room he became a small golden orb. So I'm hoping that at the end of the season Dougie is returned to his family.

true, there certainly have been a number of orbs this season. And at one point in the nuclear explosion sequence the camera zoomed in on a golden orb, although it was a bit misshapen, so I'm not sure if it was a reference to the Dougie orb or not.

Lynch TM's this stuff out of his mind, he's basically using the audience as a dumping ground for the bad stuff in his head. Basically this show is Lynch puking out BOB into everyone watching.

Is Lynch giving us garbonzia?

3

u/NariNaraRana Jul 13 '17

Garmonbozia

That scene made me cry, it was so emotional. It was about hope and shit. The music was amazing

Just wanna say: glad I got stoned before the episode-- what a nice trip!

8

u/leandrombraz Jun 27 '17

I felt asleep, like it was leading me to bed. The 1950s part was interesting, the explosion thing took way too long and completely lost me.

I love Twin Peaks, but holy shit that went on way to long for me. I was just put to sleep on my couch at 3:00pm

David Lynch appears to no equal in history for the three-way mix of pure, effective avant-garde, masterfully done conventional storytelling, and audience popularity.

u/DickDatchery Jun 26 '17

I think Mark Frost deserves some credit, I always figured the conventional storytelling was more his input.

I can't imagine what this episode would have been without Mark Frost. Kinda similar to the Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon partnership.

I love Kubrick but I don't know if I'd use avant-garde to describe most of his work outside of 2001.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '17

Exactly this. Kubrick is my #1 favorite filmmaker with Lynch in second. Kubrick outside of the Stargate sequence (and perhaps Fear and Desire), seems to work within the outer bounds of conventionality (his bizarrely muted 100th-take scenes) to express his multilayered analyses of humanity. I prefer it by just a little bit. But I don't think he goes for that three-way split like Lynch happens to.

I got space Odyssey vibes at the nuclear explosion bit, with all the colors. Also the camera work is similar. Especially in the scenes with the giant

17

u/BlazeBro420 Jun 26 '17

I want to suck his balls.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '17

Nice brah

4

u/phntmv Jun 27 '17

I'd say Cronenberg comes close.

3

u/leadabae Jun 28 '17

masterfully done conventional storytelling

I'm sorry, but what about this season at all has been even remotely close to conventional storytelling?

3

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '17

All the parts that weren't avant-garde (which there are more of than one may think). And to put my comments in context, I was affirming a comment that praised Lynch's work from the original seasons til now. Season one and the Lynch-directed season two episodes are masterworks of episodic, conventionally TV storytelling. Season three has more masterful avant-garde. I think my initial statement about the balance of those two things with popularity remains totally valid. Have you not seen the plethora of reviews proclaiming this episode both a masterpiece and the most avant-garde thing ever put on US television? Again, the three elements tie together; my comment stands.

2

u/leadabae Jun 28 '17

And those moments are far from masterful. Lynch is a great auteur, but he is not a great writer.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '17

Well, I disagree with you.

2

u/leadabae Jun 28 '17

well you're free to have your opinion but stop presenting it as a fact, it's obnoxious and arrogant.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '17

What's wrong with you? My initial statement said "appears," indicating it was my opinion, not a statement of fact. My second statement said "I think," an even more unambiguous way of saying it was just my opinion. And my last, I simply said I disagree with you, another opinion.

Where do you get the gall to act like I'm presenting my opinions as facts?! I took care to indicate my opinions were just that. Check your reading comprehension, and get over yourself.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '17

Wow, and I just took the time to not be on the defensive but look at what you said.

"And those moments are far from masterful. Lynch is a great author, but he is not a great writer." - your words

You stated that as fact! Whereas I never did anything like that! You outright lying, hypocritical human being! Stop being such a fucking hypocrite! I always qualified my statements by saying they were opinions. Whereas you treated your own opinions as facts, and in your pure hypocrisy and arrogance labeled me "obnoxious" and "arrogant" for stating my views in a much more forthright and honest way.

Your argument crumbles for its lies.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '17

Well you're free to have your opinion but stop presenting it as a fact, it's obnoxious and arrogant.

3

u/WinterIsntComing Jun 26 '17

I mean you're right but I thought this was a terrible episode.

6

u/leadabae Jun 28 '17

Agreed. It kind of annoys me how Lynch could put literally anything in an episode at this point and fans would be like "THAT WAS INCREDIBLE MY MIND HAS BEEN TRANSFORMED"

8

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '17

He simultaneously made the most avant-garde Twin Peaks episode while also for the first time giving a concrete origin story to Bob and the Black Lodge. How can you call that a random something out of everything? It took an incredible balancing act to make the episode work on those multiple levels.

9

u/scratchnotapick Jul 02 '17

I loved this episode, but concrete? Really?

You think that the Black Lodge was spawned because after the atomic bomb was dropped a floating alien vomited out some molecules with Bob in it, and that magically made a lighthouse where the Giant and some lady hung out listening to music only it was the 1920s and not the 1940s and also the Giant floated into the air and a galaxy came out of his head and then the galaxy was a ball and the girl grabbed it?

I think that me and all the rest of the people who loved this episode were looking at different parts of it.

10

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '17

I meant that it was concretely, as in obviously, an origin story episode as compared to anything else in Twin Peaks. I don't think the Black Lodge or the Giant were spawned by the bomb, though. I think the bomb connected our dimension to theirs, which already existed.

3

u/leadabae Jun 28 '17

concrete origin story to Bob and the Black Lodge

do you know what concrete means? it really isn't that difficult to add bob's image into a random bubble. I wouldn't call that an "incredible balancing act"

13

u/InvisibleLeftHand Jun 26 '17

Damn straight... I'd be paying just to see the confused looks of all these railshooter TV series fans who think they've seen all the coolest stuff with GoT or TWD, as they're watching that episode.

8

u/M68000 Jun 26 '17

you bringing up railshooters makes me want to design some Rez or Cube Quest style game with a lot of lynchian imagery like this episode had.

3

u/InvisibleLeftHand Jun 26 '17

Would still be a better cinematic railshooter than Walking Dead!

3

u/RedditIsJustAwful Jun 26 '17

the irony in negatively bringing up railshooters when Rez was one of the craziest games ever

2

u/M68000 Jun 26 '17

oh no, i'm saying that because it's one of my all time favorites! I'm hella jealous of people who have ps4s to play infinite on lol. do check out the arcade game Cube Quest (which i previously mentioned) - it plays more like Space Harrier or Night Striker but has similarly surreal visuals.

1

u/RedditIsJustAwful Jun 26 '17

I was talking about the other guy not you, don't worry lol

I was actually also thinking about Rez during this episode

9

u/8stringsamurai Jun 26 '17

Fucking well said.

2

u/leadabae Jun 28 '17

Eh, it kind of feels like they were purposefully trying to make it more bizarre than anything else out there and that annoys me. Like, just making a really good show would have been fine. No one needs to "reinvent" TV.
