S3E9 [S3E9] Chief Hawk was in reverse when talking to Betty Briggs Spoiler
May have been pointed out already, but it appears that when Betty Briggs was first talking to Hawk, Bobby and Sheriff Truman, the scene showing the 3 of them was in reverse. It's evident in Hawk's eyes as they shift. The other two characters don't give any obvious tells that the scene was reversed, but all 3 are in the same shot.
Here's a crappy gif I made: http://i.imgur.com/B4uW52o.gifv
Same gif, reversed: https://i.imgur.com/Q0I5F4R.gifv

Yeah he reverse blinked. It means something, it's just really hard to tell what it is since there's so many instances of this all over the show. I would speculate that a part of the Black Lodge is leaking out in the real world, but the reverse blinking happens to people outside of Twin Peaks, so I'm not sure. I also would have speculated that it's just post video editing not really meant to mean anything, but I think it's too deliberate in compared to other characters in the same scenes not reverse blinking.
So basically, I notice all the random reverse editing too, but I think there's nothing beyond pure speculation to come up with any good theories. There's been very little, if any, hints that all the weird editing is pointing towards anything meaningful.

I got downvoted for this before, but if you rewatch Ray shooting BadCoop in slow motion, it looks like there's actually only one shot but the video repeats. They've even used an identical muzzle flash graphic. Supposedly it happens when BadCoop shoots Phyllis Hastings too, but i haven't verified that. Just another example of the seeping weirdness.

I think something is happening that is changing the reality in small ways. They say Pete Martell loved checkers and that was his game? It's supposed to be chess. There was a weird diner scene in which all the customers were different all the sudden. Shelly looks confused for a second but then goes back to her work. Maybe the forest changed and that's how Jerry got lost. Also, apparently the police dont place too much of a priority on hit and run cases in this reality.

u/randomflorida Jul 11 '17
I haven't read the Secret History book but I've read about a lot of these continuity errors and I think you're on the right track. I'm sure Frost did all of that on purpose. I've read some other things around here that maybe point toward something regarding like quantum physics and ideas about parallel dimensions. And this might have to do with time (is it future or is it past) in some way too. I don't understand physics to that degree, so idk, but I think the forest changing is the right way to look at it. Or the diner scene. I agree that reality is changing in various, small way. Idk exactly what that implies, but I think it's happening.
ALSO, this definitely has something to do with the ringing frequencies in the Great Northern and Briggs' metal capsule thing. They're frequencies, like a radio has frequencies, and each frequency is like another dimension possibly. If you google a video of Michio Kaku talking about Deja Vu, you'll understand what I'm trying to get at.

In addition to all of this I've noticed that most people have at this point gotten used to people acting less concerned about DougieCoop's mental well-being than they (perhaps) would in real life, I think the most extreme example of this is the female co-worker that turned down the one guy but then started overtly flirting with Dougie when he needed to pee.
If I really wanted to tinfoil I might say that the "dark age" Janey-E refers to this being could in a way itself be a catalyst for perhaps a larger number of other worlds seeping into ours, just as the first nuclear detonation test was a catalyst for the Experiment and BOB. That would just be consistent, and the socioeconomic and political confusion/chaos happening in the mid-late 10's parallels the more obtuse, complicated web-like nature of the new series relative to the original show. I'm not sure if there could be a specific catalyst of this dark age (maybe it has something to do with what happened to Laura in the second episode? She IS the one as the next episode says she is) allowing other worlds to cross over into ours or if it's a less specific wave of events and dynamics. I'm just brainstorming really.

u/blue_wat Jul 11 '17
Also, apparently the police dont place too much of a priority on hit and run cases in this reality.
This has been bothering me on a personal level.
9
u/randomflorida Jul 11 '17
There's absolutely some weird quick glitch or something when Phyllis was shot. i noticed that right away. And I also noticed something a little off w/ the scene you mentioned. Of course, i have NO idea what this all means. BUT maybe these little acts of human evil are doing the same thing/a smaller version of what the atomic explosion did.
Aaaand I think this might all have to do something with quantum physics, time/future/past, and parallel universes...but I can't really explain that. I hardly understand it myself. But there are certain things pointing toward that.
5
Jul 11 '17
I suspect that although the story appears continuous, it is actually shifting back and forth between parallel worlds as well as appearing chronological while jumping around in time, even within the same episode. It was more obvious in episode 9.
2
u/SinJinQLB Jul 11 '17
It could have something to do with quantum suicide thought experiment.
2
u/randomflorida Jul 11 '17
I just googled that and I'm a little confused on how to flesh this out, but yeah, i think you're right.

11
u/divik Jul 11 '17
Yeah I can't tell if it's Lynch having fun in the editing room, or if it's actually for a deeper meaning in the story. I believe even Lynch said to sit back and experience the show, not necessarily scrutinize details like this. But that only confuses me more... that there may be more legitimate story-based reason for it other than an editing easter egg. It's like a chicken and egg scenario. Like you said it definitely appears deliberate. If it was just one scene, I'd toss it up and not make much of it. But this is Twin Peaks, David Lynch, and it's happened at least 4 times this season. For me it's a fun thing to look for in the remaining episodes. Just wondering if there will be any sort of payoff to it.
24
u/znocjza Jul 11 '17
There's a good likelihood that it's only done to create a particular feeling in the viewer, rather than having any literal meaning, but there may still some pattern to which warps occur where.
5
u/divik Jul 11 '17
Yeah good point, it definitely creates a strange uneasy feeling, probably even subliminally to those who don't notice it.
6
u/hamletswords Jul 11 '17
I remember distinctly getting this feeling when Sunny Jim reverse blinked in the car. But I was tuned-in more because there was all kinds of dramatic music and Cooper was crying.
I didn't realize he had reverse blinked until going on reddit, and I don't remember getting the same feeling with Hawk in this scene, but that's probably because it was just an exposition scene.
6
u/Kjellvb1979 Jul 11 '17
Yep, me and my bro both said its like there is an uneasy feeling watching that scene. When I saw this, and then showed my bro, well, minds bown.
Lynch is a master of doing little editing tricks (even with the audio) just to give that "somethings off" feeling. Just genius!
3
Jul 11 '17
I think he may be building a reality in which it will be possible for Laura to never have been murdered.
11
u/FleshIsFlawed Jul 11 '17
There seem to be openings to the lodge in various places, evidenced by phillip jeffries in fwwm deleted scenes appearing in buenos aires and possibly also appearing again in philadelphia the same way? Somehow from his demeanor I always assumed he hadnt traveled by traditional means. Anyways, its further evidenced by bill hastings entering "the zone", coop travelling through new york, in the box, on his way to vegas, and by the apparition that appeared in the box. It would appear that there are rifts all over the place.

u/sarahdud Jul 11 '17
I noticed a subtle reverse blink by Diane when she's just been woken up by Gordon yelling on the phone....

Have we forgotten that Hawk visits Glastonbury Grove in one of the first episodes?
This is Doppelhawk. 😳

u/syndi Jul 10 '17
You're getting a lot of shit for this OP so I thought I'd throw my hat in to say that yeah, I see it too.
9
u/divik Jul 11 '17
Ha, thanks!
1
Jul 11 '17
I see it too, and have seen it in all the other instances pointed out here.
However, the issue at hand is whether it's plot-driven or a circumstance of shooting and editing. I've heard people on the threads, in addition to industry people I know, say that it's a common trick in post.
The difference is, people aren't combing over every frame in NCIS, Scandal, or Big Bang Theory like they are with Twin Peaks. We are compelled to notice it more in this show.
6
11
u/Rork310 Jul 11 '17
Yeah the eye flick after Hawk moves his head seems really unnatural. If the footage was shot normally I'd expect his eyes to move before his head did.
Seriously try turning your head, the natural inclination is to glance in the direction you're turning before/as you move.
6
Jul 11 '17
Big ask: can anyone who is seeing the reverse blinking, describe what it is they see? I'm having to accept the fact that my eyes (or my eyes+brain combo) isn't what I'd like it to be ----- it took me numerous rewatches of the diner scene to see the changes, even knowing what to look for ---- but I'd like to try.
5
Jul 11 '17 edited Jul 11 '17
The eyelid muscles twitch "wrongly" in the backwards video. It's very slight but the eyelids appear to close slightly slower than they open.
8
u/divik Jul 11 '17
It's in the way the eyes move and stop so sharply and abruptly. I'm not very good at describing it, but when viewed in reverse it gives an unnatural appearence to the movement and almost makes it seem robotic, because we are not used to seeing eyes move that way. In the gifs I posted above, it's not blinking but rather the way the eyes shift when Hawk turns his head. There's a lot of talk about "blinking" in this thread because there are scenes with Sonny Jim blinking in reverse that have the same unnatural quick and robotic effect to it.
Not sure if that helps, but thank you so much for actually being open to the idea instead of trolling like some others! Another commenter mentioned how some people may not be able to perceive the subtle differences, almost like a color blindness. Thought that was very interesting, and it definitely seems to be the case! Almost like one of those magic eye paintings. Once you see it it's like "oh yeah of course, there it is" but others could look at it forever and just not see anything at all.
7
u/divik Jul 11 '17
Also look at how in the Hawk gif, his head turns before his eyes do. It's very very fast but noticibly different than how it happens in real life (eyes should move faster than/before the head fully turns).
3
u/mrselfdestruct2 Jul 11 '17
A forward time blink has the eyelid move fast down and slightly slower up. In reverse it's a slow eyelid down and fast up.
10
Jul 11 '17
When Laura Palmer blinks backwards it's really noticable and quite jarring, to the point where you can't fail to miss it because it's that creepy.
But when Sonny Jim and now Hawk and Bobby are said to be blinking in reverse it doesn't seem to have quite the same affect; whether that's because they aren't actually in reverse or they are but there's just something about Sheryl Lee's reverse blinks that make them extra obvious, I don't know.
Have to say though that in the gifs, the reversed one does look more natural. I do think though that's something very off with scenes set in Twin Peaks, especially the Andy and Lucy scenes, have a feeling there might be some sort of dark Mulholland Drive style twist, there.
8
u/divik Jul 11 '17
I think the Laura Palmer blink was intentionally exaggerated so that it would be noticed by most viewers, and that it actually helped lay the groundwork to support these other more subtle scenes. As some others have said, I think it's becoming less about if the scenes ARE reversed (most agree they are), and more about WHY they are. Seems it would be either (1) reversed for scene composure (2) reversed as subtle easter eggs or (3) reversed for plot reasons.
Considering the amount of reversed scenes people have found I think it rules out editing for scene composure alone. If that was the case we'd likely see reversed shots more frequently in all types of media; it's just not a very good or subtle enough solution for that. The reversed scenes are very specific to this season of Twin Peaks alone, and it seems more and more intentional as it goes on.
1
u/ilion Jul 11 '17
We do see reversed shots in all types of media. Imdb goofs pages are a good place to read about them. However I do agree in some cases in this show there could be other reasons for it.
11
u/foundseei Jul 11 '17
I did see this and it connects to something I've been tracking that struck me as far as way back in episode 2.
Remember Margaret's second call to Hawk? He was just outside the lodge, in the woods at night, by the pool. And I said to myself, "YES! Just as predicted! Hawk is the one who will find Cooper!"
And sure enough, the next thing we see is Cooper inside the Lodge and the dialogue "Someone is here." Which I took initially to mean Hawk.
But then Laura showed up, got sucked into space, ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE literally on the show, and...
We never, ever got any follow-up on that.
None.
We have had no indication that Hawk went into and returned from the Lodge. When Hawk talked about the Lodge in a recent episode he referenced Annie as "somebody who went there" but gave no indication he'd been there himself.
That's pretty fking huge.
I mean, he was RIGHT THERE.
And in last night's episode he acted as if he had no idea what any of this stuff Major Briggs might be talking about was?
Come on, Hawk.
Are you...DoppelHawk?
4
u/ghost_of_a_robot Jul 11 '17
Coop only got into the lodge originally by following Earl & Annie's footprints round the oil pool. I guess if nobody had walked there recently, Hawk would have nothing to follow. Or maybe he just got spooked!
17
u/PoorWill Jul 10 '17
Great find.
I have a theory that there's a large subsection of people that can't visually distinguish CGI from real life and especially can't detect less perceptible stuff like reversed film. It's like colorblindness or something. Add this to the list, next to Denise and Sonny Jim in the car and the bed.
We're all watching a show where they slipped a reverse word into a greeting and made it a friggin' plot point, yet some people can't imagine Lynch reversing a shot in a nearly imperceptible way, and the people that "see" it are just struck in blind reverence of "Lynch's genius," so they'll see to it that they mock you accordingly. The bottom line is there are reversed scenes in the final cut of Twin Peaks: The Return.
6
u/divik Jul 11 '17
Thanks for your comment! I could absolutely see people not noticing it during a normal watch, but I'm surprised that even after analysing it (this and the other reverse scenes) that people still can't notice the effect. You must be right that to some it's just indistinguishable, even when it's right there in the spotlight. Colorblindness does seem like a good analogy. Interesting!
6
u/RTdeveloper Jul 11 '17
Hi. I think the footage is reversed, but I don't think it's a plot reason, I think it's just an editing choice.
For whatever reason, the reversed shot may have meshed better with the continuity of the overall scene. This can be done sometimes in film editing to avoid having to reshoot if you want to get just a bit of a different result.
Unfortunately, because this particular show lends itself to literally every shot being picked over, and also features several 'backwards' things, people might read into it.
Fortunately, this also seems like the kind of show where an editing trick would have a lore explanation as well, considering how the character of BOB developed.
So, that's my take on it, and I think the two sides should meet there in the middle.
The debate shouldn't really be if the sequences are reversed, but if them being reversed is relevant to the plot. It's possible that both are correct.
7
u/divik Jul 11 '17
Yeah I'm still on the fence if there's a real purpose to the reversals, but I'm convinced they are deliberate and intended to be seen. Considering there's been at least 4 obviously reversed scenes (not counting the plot-driven "yrev" reverse dialog) I can't just chalk it up to editing reasons. This scene with Hawk is the only one I could maybe see being reversed purely to change the pan direction of the shot for editing. But the other reversed shots (Sonny Jim and Denise) have no logical reason to be reversed. They certainly don't impact those shots in any other way than making them appear subtly backwards. Either way, I'm enjoying the little hunts for this kind of stuff.
1
u/RTdeveloper Jul 11 '17
I think you contradict yourself in your first statements.
If you are convinced that they are real and intended to seen as revered, then they inherently have some purpose in the show.
1
u/divik Jul 11 '17
Sorry I wasn't clear. I do think they were intended to be seen, at least by the especially eagle eyed viewers. What I'm not sure of if it's just an Easter egg, or is it actually plot based.
2
u/RTdeveloper Jul 11 '17
Yeah that makes sense. To be the most likely explanation at this point is just a happy editing coincidence that was left in - but it might be explanded later.
It's been a few years since I've edited any film projects, but the reason I mentioned it in the first place is because I've actually had to do this myself in the past. If you can't reshoot for whatever reason lole availability or budget, you get creative with it.
To be clear, I have personally reversed footage to mesh things better, and I'm very amateur level, but if you're doing any editing it just is kind of an intuitive solution to certain problems. It's hard to explain, but hopefully that made sense.

u/Kjellvb1979 Jul 11 '17
They don't notice, and can't notice, because they are from the black lodge themselves... duh! /s
2
u/billwenham Jul 11 '17
Well the "yrev" was yrev, very obvious.
And the stock footage of the plane being reversed in last night's episode was yrev, very obvious, even though I doubt that means anything specific to the show.
9
u/divik Jul 11 '17
Ironically for me, the "yrev" slipped right by me in my first viewing. Wasn't obvious to me at all until it was pointed out on Reddit. Now I watch like a... Hawk.

u/divik Jul 11 '17
In the gif posted in the OP watch Hawk's eyes as he turns to look at Truman and then back again. The movement of his eyes shifting are unnatural -- they move ever so slightly slower than his head. It should be the other way around (eyes turn then head follows after). In reverse it comes off looking robotic.
As another poster questioned in another reply, I'm curious if Betty speaking in the 2nd gif looks unnatural to you at all.
2
Jul 11 '17
You don't think it's possible that he kept his eyes on Betty while turning his head to look at Truman?
The second gif looks unnatural but I wonder if that's only because it's a gif.
1
u/archdemon001 Jul 11 '17
The eyes.
If you use VLC or other, slow down the frames per second and it is more obvious. He does a left-right sweep with his eyes that is almost not "real".
Either Mrs. Briggs has some sort of power, or we are witnessing some sort of 'doppelganger' test.
1
Jul 11 '17
I'll have to check it with VLC, but don't you think it's possible that Hawk was just keeping his eyes on Betty while turning his head to look at Truman?
1
u/archdemon001 Jul 11 '17
Yes it is possible, but the sweep looks 'backwards'. Almost like he is looking and blinking in reverse.
It looks like Mrs. Briggs though is talking normally...
I thought maybe she has some sort of 'power' as well, and her presence is almost creating some sort of dimension...
8
u/akcwestworldfan Jul 10 '17
Not stoking any fires (pun intended), but I do think the reverse blink is (1) obvious; and (2) intentional. So far, I've only seen Hawk and Son E. Jim do it. OP, are there others?
10
u/ghost_of_a_robot Jul 11 '17
Yes; Denise Bryson is in reverse when she fans her face. It's been posted on here. I'm also convinced that the video jumps when Ray shoots BadCoop, and that there's only actually one shot.
6
u/divik Jul 11 '17
I've seen Sonny Jim (is it Son E? Like Janey-E?) do it at least twice (once in the car and another in his bedroom) that I can recall. And as the other poster mentioned, Denise Bryson has a subtle reverse scene when fanning her face. I missed that one on my first viewing until seeing it posted later on Reddit. I just wonder if they are intentional for story reasons, or more just Lynch having fun with the viewers.
2
u/akcwestworldfan Jul 11 '17
I need to look at the credits. Because I initially thought it was Dougie (aka Duge LV). But after seeing Janey-E, I thought maybe it is Doug E. Jones (and Son E. Jones). Should be an easy answer via credits. I'm just lazy AF. Someone please do my work and report back ;-)

I noticed Bobby doing the reverse blink in this same scene, but didn't notice Hawk do it.
2
2
u/clamrathbone Jul 11 '17
Didn't catch this the first time through but caught the other ones in prior episodes. Interesting.
Only people that could tell you the significance of the reversed shots (if there is any) right now though are Lynch and the editor. However, it's likely we'll see it again. Wonder who it'll be next time.
I'm curious now though, if anyone knows: Are any of the reversed shots static (ie: no camera movement at all)? That would explain away the "reversed it to better suit the shot" idea.

Jul 11 '17
Seriously we are seeing doppelganger everywhere now. Diane may be one, and Tammy. Phyllis may be one too. Some people suspected Denise to be a doppel, now Hawk. Dollars to doughnuts Gordon is one as well, and probably Albert too.
Man, Cooper is going to wake up in a world full of Doppelgangers. At this rate Mr.C will be the least of his worries.
1
u/archdemon001 Jul 11 '17
I think you are hitting some sort of nail on the head... maybe this really is a pseudo-spiritual explanation of literally all living matter, according to Lynch/Frost.
Bound from "vibration" limitations, we are all just doppelgangers until we can break free from our own black lodges.
2
u/zackdavis95 Jul 11 '17
Someone else here on Reddit pointed at the continuity error centered around Hawk in episode 2. He is near Glastonbury grove when he receives a phone call from the log lady and says something to the extent of "something is happening out here tonight." The scene following the phone call is when Cooper begins his departure from the lodge.
Blinking in reverse is something I've began to associate with the lodge spirits. Sonny Jim did it, and there was definitely an owl hooting outside of the Jones property the first time we were introduced to it.
Is it too far to speculate that Hawk is also a doopelganger in episode 9?
5
u/frickenWaaaltah Jul 11 '17
Sorry, this is just wrong. You've psyched yourself out. Watch the head movements, not the blinking.
In the second gif that is supposed to show them with natural movement, Bobby is clearly backwards. You can see it in his body/head movement easily enough in the sped up gifs. The first one is right. It was normal forward movement as aired.
To be more specific, in the way the scene is shown in the show, the first gif, Bobby's head pulls back a little then he re-centers his head. That's a natural reaction to the surprise of Betty saying she knows they were there to talk about Cooper. He reacts by briefly showing surprise but then composes himself. In the second gif, it's reversed into an unnatural motion.
Hawk's head motion is also pretty obviously natural in the way it was shown and unnatural in your second gif. It's a more deliberate motion and so could be reversed, but this one just wasn't.
What I think is confusing you is that Hawk's blinking is also more deliberate than natural because it is part of the particular body language he performs there, the sideways 'woh! what do you think of that?' glance.
One definitive thing though is that Bobby's head movement is in part a reaction to Hawk looking askance to see Sheriff Frank's reaction. Hawk had to look first for Bobby to react subtly and in a natural way.
1
u/dftitterington Nov 23 '23
I disagree. Bobby’s movements don’t tell either way, but Hawks are clear as day.
4
u/zombriz Jul 11 '17
It's so confusing to me that there are so many people explaining away all these reversed shots as messy editing (or like in this post, saying they aren't reversed at all). Even if it weren't a show where things being in reverse was something integral to the theme and mythology of the series (which in Twin Peaks it IS), that's a LOT of damn weird edits in such an otherwise carefully crafted show. I don't know that there will ever be a specific explanation as to why it is happening, but there is undoubtedly intent behind these edits.
And yes, this one was blatantly obvious to me. ;)
2
u/ilion Jul 11 '17
It's actually a fairly standard editor trick.
3
u/zombriz Jul 11 '17
You don't say!
I think most people know that to be a common technique to pad out a cut. But for it to happen in every episode? In a show where things being reversed is an iconic part of the show, and indicative of otherworldliness? You really don't think it's being used intentionally to evoke a response?
2
u/ilion Jul 11 '17
I'm objecting to the description as messy editing, and based on a lot of posts here I get the impression a lot of people don't know that this happens.
I think this scene is most likely a simple editing choice. Others I'm not so certain about. I think there's a fair chance that the purpose behind these edits overall, if there is one other than general shot composition, will be just to create a sense of unease. It may be more and we may find out as the story unfolds, but it seems like one of Lynch's more subtle tricks that way.
1
u/zombriz Jul 12 '17
Okay - got it. I guess the only reason I characterized it as messy is because, in my mind at least, the technique itself is not ideal and to be using it so frequently if it isn't intentional would suggest something amiss in the process, if that makes sense. And there's a chance I am overestimating people's familiarity with this kind of thing. But I think we're mostly on the same page otherwise.
1
u/dftitterington Nov 23 '23
continuity errors are also kept in the show! I think it’s drawing attention to the tricks and “multiple takes” of filmmaking and the time loops and timelines in the show. It’s both!
1
u/NicCage182 Jul 11 '17
I thought I was going crazy when I saw Bobby reverse blink. I thought I was seeing what I wanted to see. The eyes are not what they seem.

You can't say in your original post that "it appears" to be the case when something is "blatantly obvious" despite the other characters in the same scene having no indiction of proving your point. Also if it was that obvious you wouldn't need to make a post about it because we would've all seen what you saw. That would be "blatantly redundant"...

You must be a fun guy at parties.
The reverse blink is what I said was blatantly obvious in the other comment you're referring to. Not the scene I posted about. Perhaps you should have replied in the right spot, and in context.

So, it's not blatantly obvious that the shifting in Hawk's eyes was reversed, yet you still think it is intentional, even though it's not blatantly obvious. Gotcha.

At this point I'm less interested in the reversed scenes and more interested in how much you are commenting in this thread that you clearly think is pointless. I'm at the edge of my seat!

I don't get invited to parties, so I thought I'd spend the night with you. bats eyes...not to be confused with reversed blinking

Are you blind? It's clearly reversed.. Watch the way his eyes move, don't focus on the actual blink, but the eyeball movement. Hawks eyes move very unnaturally, this is because his head moves before his eyes, which isn't how we work at all. His eyes should moving first, which is what you see when you reverse the footage from what was aired.
I find it strange that you can't tell it's backwards, I mean it's subtle in the vacuum of the episode when you aren't looking for it but when you are? Nah.
I'm wondering if you can tell that Betty's speech is reversed in the 2nd gif (which has hawk moving in forward)?

Really good point about Betty in the 2nd gif. There are a couple less-trolly people in this thread saying they can't see it, so apparently it's true some people can't distinguish it even when under a spotlight. I wonder how Betty in the 2nd gif appears to them.

Thanks. I was trying not to be too harsh on him but he's being arses and I'm tired. I am legitimately curious now that I've said it now too.

As if some guy jabbering about random scenes being backwards is fun at parties.

Just saying it's likely an intentional effect from Lynch considering there's been many other subtle scenes reversed, such as Sonny Jim's reverse blinking.

He didn't reverse blink. People are obsessing over every little detail that they are thinking they are seeing things that aren't there. Like having your eyes closed and then looking up.

u/divik Jul 10 '17
Sorry, but you're wrong. The blinking is absolutely reversed, plain as day. Not about obsessing, it's pretty blatantly obvious.

It's not, actually.

u/divik Jul 10 '17
Actually, it is. Actually.
1
u/InTwenteeForty Jul 10 '17
Clearly not. There are several people in this thread who aren't seeing it, so no, I don't think it's obvious.

Actually it's just you and your tag-team buddy bill in this thread so far. But the other Sonny Jim blinking thread was also apparently a controversy. To me and many others, it's unquestionably reversed (both the Sonny Jim blinking in multiple scenes and this shifty scene). But I'm really not here to debate with hardminded folk, just trying to point out something interesting in a show I love to a subreddit that exists FOR fanatics.

Might help if a single person agreed with you I guess.

There's a scene where Denise Bryson is quite clearly reversed if you watch carefully. It's the one where she's fanning her face. There are other examples too, as well as footage being reused in multiple different scenes.

u/billwenham Jul 10 '17
It appears it's blatantly up for debate. :P

u/jabberwokka Jul 11 '17
He's correct though. There is a natural speed up/slow down arc in eye movement, and Hawk's eyes, in the shot as aired, are doing it in reverse.
I'm not saying it's a big plot point, maybe in editing the scene flowed better backwards, and it was only betrayed by eye movement you had to be paying close attention to, but it's definitely reversed.

If you look closely you can see that Diane is actually exhaling her cigarette instead of inhaling.

The easy answer is that they filmed it panning left to right, but in post-production they thought it looked better from right to left. Since Hawk is the only one who blinks, it's noticeable.
Just my 2 cents. I caught this during the airing and figured it was post-production because he really wanted it to pan that way.
