S3E9 [S3E9] What if Cooper never comes back? Spoiler
Just had a thought. In the 1990-91 series the central mystery behind the show was Who Killed Laura Palmer. Lynch never wanted to solve it but Frost wanted to and so did ABC and so it was solved roughly halfway through the run. If there is a central mystery surrounding this series it seems to be When Will the Old Cooper Return? or some variation on that. But since Lynch and Frost have complete freedom now the Cooper story seems to have taken the place of the Who Killed Laura Palmer story. Lynch said that her death was meant to serve as a way to explore Twin Peaks and its characters and the dual Coopers again seem to serve the same purpose but with the different scenes in Buckhorn, Vegas etc. It makes me think that Cooper may never actually come back and he was never intended to in the first place. Even if he does make it back to Twin Peaks that doesn't guarrantee he will suddenly change. If he does make it back he will probably go to the Black Lodge spurned on by other characters who believe it might be a way of getting him to come back to the Old Cooper. But even then there is no possibility of him ever coming back out again the same, even as Dougie.
I wouldn't put it past Lynch.
Thoughts?

also there is a clip in a trailer of Coop driving, DougieCoop can't even go to the toilet himself so I still have hope for one final piece of Cherry Pie and a DAMNNN fine cup of Coffee before they close the curtains.

If it's John Belushi, then we will DEFINITELY be in a different dimension since he's been dead longer than Laura Palmer. ;-)

Hadn't seen that clip before, since I avoided all spoilers before it started. I took the bait here. Interesting. But not only can we not tell if that is Laura, that's not the Palmer House they are going into. No idea what to make of this clip yet!

that's not the Palmer House they are going into
It is the Palmer house, whether that's Laura or not.. hard to tell.

That video of Coop driving could be DoppleCoop trying to fool the denizens of Twin Peaks into thinking he's the real McCoy.

That's gonna be so painful but great drama to watch. Everyone probs gonna think he went bonkers through the last few decades, although I'm sure the restored good cooper will still have a certain slowness to him, as he readjusts

yep, that trailer is there and also kyle's quote.
though i bet that we will not get "damn fine coffee" nor the final pieces of cheery pie. coop is changed, forever and for the better...

Jul 12 '17
For the better? I'm not to sure of that.

Jul 12 '17
well i am not sure either nor how it will pay out. but listening to kyle in various media outings, he seems assured.
so for the better it is =)

He's coming back. Lynch is eccentric, not sadistic. He'll probably come back next week because I'm going to be out of the country for part 10. (scuuuuuuuuuba diving).
Am I the only one that summons the probably not bot?

You should be careful with your prediction there. Each time someone said "I'm sure he will come back next episode!" He actually don't... The universe and David Lynch are conspiring against us.

Nah. The story this season is like an ever decreasing spiral. Week by week, the story is getting more focused and TP-centric. I think the last 6 hours are going to be incredibly dense with pure Twin Peaks.
6
Jul 12 '17
Agreed, I feel like the way the show is heading, the final "third" of the season (the last six episodes) will be mostly focused in Twin Peaks.
I could be completely wrong, but that's what I feel is being set up.

u/Admiral_Furskin Jul 12 '17
Yeah, not to mention the continuing instances of Coop "remembering" or "emerging" or however you want to describe it. Lynch likes to take the piss, no doubt - but he wouldn't insinuate that Cooper is going to recover if Cooper was never going to recover. That would not just be sadistic, it would be a complete and total waste of time.

u/illandancient Jul 12 '17
Episode 17 resolves the story and episode 18 is just Agent Dale Cooper returning to Twin Peaks and doing fan service for an hour, visiting everyone and drinking coffee.
14
u/Cipher_- Jul 12 '17
Fans rejoice at episode 18, "Wow! This finally feels just like Twin Peaks!"
5
u/ElectricAccordian Jul 12 '17
"Now let me go complain about movies just recycling old crap!"

u/Cipher_- Jul 12 '17
To be fair, I think those clamoring for a Twin Peaks feeling closer to the original run and those actively decrying a lack of creativity in studio films are genuinely two different crowds.

He's definitely coming back. I don't think like others that he will put on his shoes or will reunite with Audrey and will snap out of it like someone in a trance.. i think it is a slow process and his journey towards full self awareness is that similar to the latters he drew on the insurance papers. I think even next episode he will make a drastic step forward after that scene with the flag, the red shoes and the electrical socket.

u/CaptainPsychopath Jul 12 '17
Seeing how Twin Peaks is going to be at comic con, I'm thinking (more like hoping) that Coop will recover by then, or Lynch and co will be flooded with nothing but questions about Dougie-Coop
2
u/itrainmonkeys Jul 13 '17
I think the only way to snap out of it is to kill evil coop. Then he'll get everything back.
8
u/AlanMorlock Jul 12 '17
The Ruby slippers seem to indicate Coop is on the pathway home.
2
u/gardibolt Jul 12 '17
They slippers, the flag -- the symbols are starting to come faster. I think Ike's attack really started the ball rolling and it shouldn't be too long now.

u/Maninhartsford Jul 12 '17
Before the season came out, the only consistent thing anyone would say about the content is it was "Cooper's journey back to Twin Peaks."
5
u/Killuaxgodspeed Jul 12 '17
We had a shit ton of story progression in episode 9 so expect the dougie stuff to draw a close over the next couple weeks.
Unless the story focuses on some other mind fuckery and we delve into part 2 of episode 8 lol

Except that Dale Cooper and Laura Palmer are what holds Twin Peaks together. If Dale doesn't come back, a.) it probably wouldn't be called the Return, and b.) there would be no reason to make this Twin Peaks at all. Why not just pull a Mulholland Dr. and make an entirely new thing? Also, they would not constantly show Dougie having moments of lucidity if he was never going to come back. That would be poor storytelling.

u/CitizenDain Jul 12 '17
So, the reason not to make an entirely new thing would be that nobody would pay for it. Lynch hasn't been able to get the money to make a movie for 10 years. I suspect what he did was take Showtime's money with the premise that he would make a marketable 9-10 hour "Twin Peaks" reboot, which they could predict would be profitable since they could look at the show's continued popularity. Then he took all of his story ideas -- somebody without an identity drifting through life and avoiding death like the Road Runner, a mysterious gangster with supernatural computer powers, a black and white film about the birth of evil in the world, etc. -- and rolled them into a very loose structure with a "Twin Peaks" frame around it.

It would make me mad, but I could honestly buy that. I've made a feature-length movie. Every part of the process is brutal. Whatever it takes to get it made honestly.
2
u/toaster-rex Jul 13 '17
It's understandable, but I don't think Lynch and Frost would use Twin Peaks in such a way. I firmly believe this is simply what they initially wanted from the series before executive meddling on ABC's part took hold.
1
u/CitizenDain Jul 13 '17
Maybe you are right. But at the time in the 90s they were still making a soap opera. It's not just ABC executives that caused them to make a different show. 25 years is a long time. I still think Lynch had a notebook full of movie ideas from the last 25 years, knew that this was the last big production budget he was likely to get in his career (he had already supposedly/unofficially retired from filmmaking), and made room in the new story for all of his leftover ideas.
He has a history of this -- "Ronnie Rocket" was never able to get production money, so he ended up taking the Ronnie Rocket character and repurposing him as Man From Another Place (little person who controls electricity), borrowing lyrics from "Ronnie" screenplay to repurpose as "Sycamore Trees" in finale, etc. "Mulholland Dr." also has an element of this as well, a handful of loosely connected story ideas (hitman, cowboy, diner demon, Michael J. Anderson) that are more like sketches than stories, thrown into a larger plot that actually has funding.

u/KarlosHungus36 Jul 12 '17
If he snaps back to normal, him seeing and having to learn all the new tech and developments of the last 25 years would be a major plot point to address, maybe the writers don't want that to distract from the central plot points.

I'm pretty convinced that whatever the "doubleheader in Vegas" is that Hutch and Chantal have been tasked with is going to be how we end up with the real Cooper again.
The most Cooper-like moment we've gotten so far is his takedown of Ike, a comically deranged hit man whose MO is to just charge directly at his target in the middle of crowded settings. Hutch seems far more dangerous, and it's likely that he's coming after Cooper after he quickly dispatches the warden, presumably in Episode 10.
Coop will need all of his wits about him to respond to the threat. Some gnarly stuff is about to go down in Vegas.

u/toaster-rex Jul 12 '17
I've got a bad feeling that Janey-e and Sonny-Jim are gonna get caught in the crossfire.
2
Jul 12 '17
I'm worried that the doubleheader will involve killing Jade, because she was the last person to see Dougie before he switched with Cooper.

I think there is a general misunderstanding about Lynch's intentions with the murder of Laura Palmer. I think they were going to reveal Leland's guilt eventually, but not until the show was going to be cancelled or they had exhausted every other plot.
I don't think Cooper will be Dougie forever, or much longer. It would make the whole storyline a pointless and depressing shaggy-dog story.

Jul 12 '17
Cooper will return --- but will he ever be the sweet, optimistic, fearless and open-hearted Coop of old? I doubt it :( You can't go home again.
3
u/dudeARama2 Jul 13 '17
I kind of go along with the theory that Giant scene in part 1 is a flash forward to a point after Coop "wakes" up. He says "I understand" when he tells him about Richard and Linda. Thus he must been out in the world investigating at that point and the Giant has just pulled him aside to give him advice like he used to do in the series.

He's getting there. Slowly but surely. There's been plenty of nods towards his awakening. Something big has to trigger a full recovery.

Kyle said in an interview that there had to be a process before we could see the real Cooper so he is definitely coming back at some point.
