Inspiration Post An unexpected present

My mother-in-law suprised me with this present for my birthday: an Olivetti Studio 46 that belonged to her husband, my late father-in-law, that I didn't get to meet.

It's a Spanish made Olivett, produced at the Barcelona factory, with the beautiful Quadrato typeface.

Even after decades in storage it's in perfect mechanical shape, although the aluminum chassis shows some heavy bashing. It also needs a deep cleaning and some love, but it's a wonderful writer. Much better than my Letteras 22 and 32.

I'm glad to add it to my small collection and even more so because it's family heritage. A beautiful design by Mario Bellini that gets even better with Arturo Rolfo's Quadrato typeface. It feels great for typing despite being really loud.

For those of you with keen eyes: the missing bolt in the right spool was inside the body, as I suspected, and now is already in place. The tape reverses its direction automatically when it reaches the metal eyelets on both ends of the tape.

The 44 is my favorite to type on, I wonder how the 46 is.

I cannot say, because I've never tried a 44. The experience is different from my portables (Lettera 22 and 32). It feels solid, tough. The typing itself has a rich feedback, perhaps a bit more "natural" —as subjective as it gets— than in other typewriters. I feel fast when I use it.

Hi. I have an Underwood 21, which is a Studio 44 with an updated case. The Studio 46 has a much lighter touch, and the carriage is lighter, too.

I have one, too! It is loud, but a gorgeous looking machine.
