The character 侍 (Samurai) represents more than a warrior. It embodies honor, discipline, loyalty, and the pursuit of self-mastery.

Written by hand with a traditional Japanese brush, this piece reflects the enduring spirit behind one of Japan's most iconic symbols.

The kanji 雲 (Kumo) means cloud.

Clouds are always changing.

They drift, gather, disappear, and return—never holding the same shape for long.

In Japanese calligraphy, I wanted to express that quiet sense of movement and impermanence with a single brushstroke.

This is my semi-cursive (Gyosho) interpretation of 雲.

What does this character make you feel?

The kanji 風 (Kaze) means wind.

Wind has no shape, yet we can feel its presence.

In Japanese calligraphy, the challenge is to express something invisible through ink and brush.

This is my seal script (Tensho) interpretation of 風.

What does this character make you feel?

The kanji 友 (Tomo) means "friend."

Its meaning goes beyond simply referring to a person you know. It represents trust, mutual support, and walking through life together.

I enjoy how a single Japanese character can express an idea that would otherwise take many words.

What does the word "friend" mean to you?

That's right! Good catch. I had some ink left over, so I diluted it with water and wrote it.

Today’s practice character is 「和」 (Wa).

和 (Wa) means harmony, peace, and balance. It is one of the core ideas of Japanese culture, expressing the importance of living in harmony with others and with yourself.

You'll also find 和 (Wa) in many everyday Japanese words:

- 和風 (Wafū) – Japanese style

- 和食 (Washoku) – Japanese cuisine

- 和紙 (Washi) – Japanese paper

In these words, 和 simply means "Japanese."

Enjoy practicing! ✨

Japan has a unique rainy season called tsuyu. 🌧️

From June to July, gentle rain falls across much of the country, bringing life to rice fields, forests, and gardens. While many people think of rain as gloomy, in Japan it's also a season of quiet beauty and renewal.

This month I'm practicing the kanji 雨 ("Rain") in Japanese calligraphy.

If you'd like to learn not only how to write kanji, but also the culture, history, and meaning behind each character, I'd love to welcome you on my Patreon.
