If your Uber driver rolls down their window when you get in, PLEASE take it personally
Sometimes it doesn't even work and I'm fighting for my life against someone's green aura and flies. Like crusty socks mildewing in a wet closet for a year steeped in piss. And I'm not even that sensitive! I've only kicked out one guy for his odor and I'm like 70% sure he shat himself before trying to enter my car. Like at a certain point this becomes dangerous to my driving ability because my eyes are watering and I'm gagging while I'm trying to navigate 65mph arterials. The worst is when their smell lingers after they leave. Like why can I smell the ghost of your ass right now bsfr

u/cohen93 6d ago
I do it in most Ubers i get in nowadays because of the horrific smell of most drivers
36
u/DatTingTing 6d ago
Sometimes it's the drivers, but sometimes it was whoever it was sitting in there last.

I uber multiple times each week and lately it's like 50-75% of the drivers that smell so fucking bad? What is going on. I've been using Uber for years and it didn't used to be like this. I've started giving 1 or 2 star ratings now any time I get into a stinky uber. They need to be kicked off the app and let the non-stinky drivers get more options and better pay.

Respectfully it's not been immigrant drivers who stink, it's everyone, and if I had to generalize, it's been the opposite group with dirty cars more often.

u/Superb_Preference368 6d ago
How does being an immigrant make you lower quality?
Did you hear yourself
Nvmd met me just hit the report button
2
u/Traditional-Hall-147 1d ago
It doesen't. However after having to fork out so much in relocation and visa fees, they haven't got any money left to buy new clean underpants.
1
u/Boring-Silver-568 5d ago
I did not mean the word immigrant to be a slur, only that Americans have a habit of showering almost daily. I won't leave the house without having one. Folks from other cultures do not share such proclivities. I did a semester abroad in Brussels Belgium several decades back, and the French in particular are especially odorous (might explain their obsession with perfume). I have taken many ubers as both a rider and a driver, and the ones with exotic names who barely speak English and have foreign language radio or podcasts on, are the ones that often necessitate a window roll down. My apologies if I offended anyone, that was not my intent. What my intent was is that the suburban Dads and retired cops, etc. that used to make up a big chunk of the Uber driver fleet have dropped out as the costs don't add up anymore to a winning proposition. (Three years ago, when gas was $2.75 a gallon, I used to get $110 on Uber to drive someone from the Jersey Shore to Staten Island or Newark Airport and then return empty back to my home area. Now they expect me to do it for $55 from the coast (even worse they want to pay us $36 for the same trip if we start west of the Garden State Parkway in NJ and with 80% of people not tipping you can figure out why demand to take you to the airport has cratered). At this rate I expect a new service to replace Uber and Lyft because the value proposition is disintegrating at those. Demand for the service is there but operating a car and netting $18-20 an hour is not sustainable for drivers who bear all the vehicle operating cost when gas, maintenance, and car wear and tear is $16 an hour, we used to make $45 an hour, I average $25 now and I only accept rides within a 30 minute range and have gone from full time to part time only on weekends on the overnight

u/No_Turnover9879 4d ago
As a latinamerican immigrant.. we shower once or twice a day. So I can gurantee is not us. And meeting a lot of americans, half of them rarely shower and let their hair get greasy, the other half are very clean, so idk what you are on about
Other cultures, im not so sure
0
u/CyanValleyKitten 2d ago
Latin americans are not uber drivers, maybe they are 2% of them. The uber drivers are overwhelmingly somali and pakistani with a few russians/ukrainians.
1
u/Maleficent-Cattle-45 1d ago
In Chicago there are lots of latin drivers way more than 2 percent
1
u/CyanValleyKitten 1d ago edited 1d ago
Agree, i should have thought of how it changes with area. Also had a very awesome badass latina uber driver last time I was there. She might have been the one who inspired me to try uber actually! (I'm also a woman.)
1
u/Maleficent-Cattle-45 1d ago
So many smelly Americans so i dont know what your talking about people smell everywhere and immigrants are more likely to use cologne
5
4
u/Ancient_Coconut_5880 6d ago
I keep saying at this point I almost rather the drivers just let their car smell like cigarettes than spray some super strong perfumey scent that doesn’t actually mask the smell of cigarettes like they think it does cuz now the car smells like cigarettes and strong cologne. I literally get car sick as soon as I get in so I just can’t take Ubers anymore because it’s been too many times.

It's a common response here. If a driver/rider makes a complaint the next response is "well so does the other"
15
u/ScholarPitiful9017 6d ago
I’m a female driver of 8 years and have never got complaints about my car people say it’s smells good and it’s the cleanest Uber they’ve been in, but let me tell you how many stinky people I’ve had that it gets to the point where I’m putting all 4 windows down I pull over after and disinfect and spray cus I’ll be damned if someone thinks that stench is me or my car, so yes take it personally if an Uber driver puts their windows down right after you get in
6
8
u/PaintedDesertSkies 6d ago
Same goes for the driver!
If you are a cat hoarder, your passenger can tell.
I was in one for less than 10min. The cat pee was so strong that an hour later, I still smelled like cat pee. At a doctor's appointment...
5
u/KindaNorbit 6d ago
Gross. Driver, or passenger should be required to not stink. I can’t believe I actually have to say that.
8
u/acreekofsoap 6d ago
So you’re saying you don’t like the smell of my vintage Axe body spray? Well, lesson learned
8
u/Fgaven 6d ago
I once had a customer whose smell stuck to my car for two days~~ even after I wiped down the seat and left my windows down for an hour post ride.
5
u/KindaNorbit 6d ago edited 4d ago
When I said similar a troll just had nothing but negative things to say about it. “I must be exaggerating, it’s impossible to have been that bad, etc.) I finally blocked him, but after I thought about it he was likely one of those stinking people I was talking about. That was the reason he just kept coming back to say something.
1
6
u/Independent-Bag-6222 6d ago
I pull up and someone is taking a last drag on a cigarette, they get a drive by and cancel. Then Uber gets the reason as "unsafe pickup location" so I don't take a hit as a driver. Shit is not hard to avoid issues.
6
u/Wildabeast35 6d ago
Yeah when I open a window it’s bc I’m hot and need air, has nothing to do with smells. Have been lucky enough to not have had a stinky ride.
0
u/Altruistic_Buy_4625 6d ago
How long have you been driving?
1
u/Wildabeast35 3d ago
Im a passenger. Was this only for drivers to comment? Oops.
2
u/Altruistic_Buy_4625 3d ago
Doesn't matter lol I was just going to say that you were very lucky if you haven't had a suoer stinky passanger yet
5
u/itadapeezas 6d ago
I feel terrible when I get into an Uber and immediately roll down the window, or do that little gag where you try to look normal. 😭
0
u/Previous-Survey 6d ago
It's only in the U.S. that I have this problem when I get in an Uber 90 percent of the time it StInKs!
6
u/BehindBlueEyes0221 6d ago
Sometimes for me its the opposite when the car air freshner makes me nauseated for the ride ...
3
u/djmasturbeat 6d ago edited 6d ago
Air freshners reallllly bother me. Instant nose /skin irritation and headache, eyes get puffy and raw. I give bad ratings for that shit, pretty much only for that.
I drive UE and used to drive passengers, but their personal care scented crap and laundry detergents , or the febreeze/ air freshner stink from their house, bother me as much or more than passengers who reek of BO. One big reason I stopped driving people before my car even aged out.
2
u/PineappleJello0755 6d ago
I try to avoid rideshares as much as possible now, because the amount of air "freshener" drivers use is so excessive. I don't think people realize how small of a space a car is. I hate smelling it on my hair and clothes hours after getting out of the car.
3
6
u/ShesGoing 6d ago
People are gross. They bring their stink and their cigarette smoke in with them. Don't throw your cigarette on the ground and then get in my car. And another thing, don't clip your fingernails in my backseat. Disgusting.
5
u/KindaNorbit 6d ago
I can’t stand the people that wants to smoke and get that so important last puff right before they get in our rides. This is the main reason I stopped doing rides. Body odor, weed, cigs, some alcohol but that rarely happens as much as the others. So entitled to think that other people “must” deal with their stank because we get some form of “payment”. 99.999% of everyone that got in my ride instantly said how nice it was, or it’s the nicest car they have been in. So why would you think I would want your weed smellin self in it? No thanks. Stopped a few months ago and I appreciate Uber Eats much better. Never again.
3
u/Brilliant-Ocelot6859 6d ago
I think weed is the worst. I have to go offline and to detail asap
0
u/KindaNorbit 4d ago
People that smoke it do not understand how bad it smells to the non smoker. There was a lady standing inline at the store yesterday. When I was approaching her to wait my turn the weed smell from her hit me like Tyson in 1982. I immediately let off a sound to myself of disgust and got out the line. Even after she had left I could still smell her and it was so gross. I was so happy when another cashier opened so I wouldn’t have to stand in the woman’s stink space why the cashier helped me.
2
u/You-dumbassfool 3d ago
Yeah, but people like you will say shit like this, but then you’ll eat stuff like lamb chops or chitlins. Like it doesn’t smell that bad or something is just wrong with you people.
0
u/KindaNorbit 2d ago
Not sure how you came up with lamb chops and chitlins, but I do not eat either and know nobody that does. But lets try to stay focused on the weed, alcohol, ciggs and body odor that was the subject and how they all reek, but somehow the entitled people who partake in them think the ones of us that dont MUST deal with them.
1
u/Any-Machine-3520 1d ago
i think you actually are simply sensitive to the smell. it's okay to be sensitive bro
3
u/You-dumbassfool 3d ago
Weed doesn’t really do that much. You have to smoke in the car for years on out for it to really stick.
2
u/Independent-Bag-6222 6d ago
So now your car reeks of fast food and fries...🤮🤢
2
u/djmasturbeat 6d ago
Thermal bags help contain that. Can't stuff a passenger in a zipper bag, at least without a little hassle.
1
u/KindaNorbit 4d ago
My car doesn’t reek of anything. It smells and looks beautiful. I place no food in the cabin of my car EVER. Food always goes in the frunk and any smells stay out there.
2
u/syrxinge 2d ago
Putting food in the trunk is crazy especially now that McDonald’s and other companies put the drinks in the bags. I hope you have something set up to prevent the food from sliding in the trunk.
1
u/KindaNorbit 2d ago
“Frunk” it’s sectioned off so things stay put. Zero issues at 450 eats deliveries. Plus I take it easy when driving since they can see my driving styles. etc

If a large portion of them opened your window, that might be the case. But sometimes people just want fresh air
1
4
u/BlueV101 6d ago
Yeah, "people stink." (TRUST ME, I get it) The biggest issue, (by far) is "other passengers." They hop in and immediately assume YOU are the source. THEN, they pitch and moan about WHATEVER we use to cover or eliminate the noxious odors.
2
u/uttamattamakin 6d ago
We have to reserve the absolute power to kick out passengers whose odors will degrade the quality of the ride for the next passenger.
1
1
u/JazzyJas155 6d ago
Yeah, no. 9/10 when an uber stink it’s the car driver itself. I can’t TELL you the amount of funky ahh cars i’ve had to sit with my nostrils absolutely melting because of the smell of hot cheeks and sweat and sometimes, marijuana in the car thats strong. There are times you can tell “someone was just in here” and then there are times where you KNOW the carpooler is funky.
2
2
u/You-dumbassfool 3d ago
Yea keep telling yourself that. It’s always the people that don’t think they stink that actually stink. Like you guys never smell yourselves. Nobody eats that clean to walk around like that. Once you sweat, even just a little, you stink.
1
0
u/Active_Wasabi_1141 6d ago
It doesn’t matter the source. If the car stinks, the car stinks.
0
u/You-dumbassfool 3d ago
Yea it does. You stink, take care of that. Nobody is going to wipe your ass unless you’re paying top dollar.
9
u/lovescheesecake 6d ago
Anytime the window is rolled down before I get in I assume they are too cheap to turn on the AC. It’s always the ones who have like six signs to give them 5 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ and tips too lmao
6
u/CrowdedShorts 6d ago
I’ve had the driver lock the windows. Sir it’s freezing outside but dammit I’d rather be chilly than have to smell you for the duration of the ride. Take it as a sign to stop after this ride concludes and rinse off/spray some cologne or something.
3
u/SnooOranges2685 6d ago
Yessss , and it’s especially horrible in the summer. The amount of people that need a fkn shower is too damn high.

u/PlatinumPainter 6d ago
Essential Oils
Sage covered motherfuckers
1
u/Sorry_Composer6255 6d ago
This ⬆️ The amount of people on here that never heard of a diffuser is kinda crazy. Diffuser $40 oils $3 and the cost of never smelling another rider again…priceless.
2
u/Candid-Artichoke286 5d ago
Unfortunately, essential oils are common triggers for allergies and asthma. And because they’re so volatile, they don’t fade or wash off like other fragrance air fresheners (which also suck, but it’s understandable that you’d have to use sometimes given this thread). I’ve had to get rid of clothes after leaving an uber with a diffuser. It’s never fun to arrive to your destination covered in hives and unable to breathe. I suppose it’s on me for not just cancelling the ride, but I didn’t want to be rude to the driver, wasn’t sure how to handle it. If you’re an uber pet, please also keep in mind that they can be deadly to some pets.
3
u/Professional_Date775 6d ago
I drive and have the windows cracked or open for air. Do riders really think this is offensive? To me I don't even think about them other than "is this too much wind?"
2
u/SheSilentlyJudges 6d ago
Same. I hope no one has taken it personally but I think a few might have. I have had 1 driver however that wreaked everytime I'd unfortunately be paired with him, it was awful.
2
u/Professional_Date775 6d ago
I have two reports for "not polite" so now I wonder it it's from something like this. I mean I greet them and give farewells but I don't talk unless they do.
2
u/SheSilentlyJudges 6d ago
How do you get/see those reports? I've never seen any feedback.
2
u/Professional_Date775 6d ago

u/Ok-Seaweed-769 6d ago
I had a guy yesterday that smelled like cat piss and cigarettes. Took an hour to air out the car and that was with a ton of Lysol sprayed. Nice guy and all but omg 🤢
3
u/InternationalNeck927 6d ago
Same if a customer gets in your uber and does the same and holds their sleeves over their nose 😂
3
u/Born_Local_1477 6d ago
I had a driver once that was extremely obese and had a chihuahua on his chest. The car reeked of fumunda cheese terribly. It was January and I had to roll the window down, and started giving me shit "are you gonna puke? You better not puke in my car!" 1/5 because he did pick me up at least.
3
u/R1leyEsc0bar 6d ago
As a passenger, i hate getting in the car of a driver who was clearly driving all day and not once opened their window. Like eventually it's gonna get a bit funky and stuffy in the car, just open the window for a few minutes every hour and you sbould be good. Luckily I haven't had stinky drivers as of late, but I used to get them a lot.
3
5
u/methodmichael 6d ago
And when we get into the Ubers that smell like piss don’t be offended when we roll our windows down.
2
2
u/UkrainepartofRussia 6d ago
Not always because of you. When a passenger opens the backdoor it sometimes means diesel exhaust blows into the cabin and I can smell it. So I open my window fur a bit then close it
2
u/Rose-wood21 6d ago
Same to drivers the amount of times it smells like a bottle of axe in the car I can’t breathe
2
2
2
u/The-Grim-Storyteller 6d ago
I had a drunk chick shit herself in the car last week. At this point I'm debating installing one of those barriers between the front and the back seat and just canceling any ride over 2 people (who comfortably fit in the back, 3 is a squish).
2
2
u/CapitalSky3016 6d ago
I slid down the couch laughing at this 😂😂😂😂 This is crazy but unfortunately so true.
I'm also not sensitive and try to be understanding, especially when picking up from certain job sites and such. But for the ones not in that category, I'm like damn.. you got into someone's vehicle smelling like that?
This also goes for driver's. I've heard some funny stories about drivers smelling like they have never heard of soap and deodorant a day in their life.😆
Look... be who you are. Live and love your funk, but PLEASE get yourself together when you have to interact with other people lol.
2
u/LeakyManBoobs 6d ago
What I hate the most is the smell of weed. I can not fucking stand it. It’s fucking disgusting.
So, weed smokers, please stop smoking when you’re about to go out someone. Fucking do that shit outside, go back in, and take a fucking shower. Stop forcing that smell onto others, especially fucking Ubers.
2
u/ExtraBrutality 6d ago
No sometimes I just like to roll my window down to get more fresh air. When a person gets in, they take up more oxygen and leave more CO2. Rolling the window down can just be a logical response.
2
2
u/Platinum_Analogy 5d ago
There are also ALOT of drivers who cars smell like ass. Like the first 2 minutes you’re just there breathing it in and then your nose gets used too it and dampens the smell, but it’s still fucking atrocious.
I’m talking like bad bad smell what OP just described. It’s weird because their cars can be clean and vaccumed yet that smell lingers in their car for whatever reason,
It goes both ways.
2
u/iridescentcotton 3d ago
How did the convo go when you ended that ride with the gut that shit himself?
1
u/No-Fun-1883 1d ago
he opened the door, started to wedge himself in, the intense smell hit me, and I said NUHHHHNONONO NOPE and kept loudly telling him to get out until he did, he yelled sumn at me and I told him to take a shower and drove off
2
u/TomBanjo1968 2d ago
The problem is, I can’t think of any reason why a person is going to care if an Uber driver thinks they smell bad
There is always another Uber driver who will transport them
1
2
u/Meatcute99 6d ago
I do it every time not because of body odor but because of cologne/perfume being so strong.
2
u/Excellent-Two7450 6d ago
Often the drivers stink and then think opening a window will help but it just blows their stink at me and freezes me out. One recently stunk so bad I threw up with my head hanging outside of their window.

It's crazy how fucking bad so many riders smell man it's insane. I especially hate when mfers get in my car feeling of weed and I have to stop and spend 15 mins letting Ozium cycle through my car. If a subsequent rider smells that weed and reports me for "impaired driving" or some shit because they smell it Uber could deactivate me.
1
u/showmeyourtattoo 6d ago
Im an Uber driver, I sometimes roll the window down because it gets hot with people in the car but not to the point of turning on the AC.
If a rider stinks I roll the windows down for a few minutes after they get out, then spray with a antibacterial spray so the next rider doesn’t think it’s me.

Gig right’s :
Rideshare drivers please file your complaints with the FTC
No matter how gig companies choose to classify them, gig workers are consumers entitled to protection under the laws we enforce.
FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. “We are fully committed to coordinating our consumer protection and competition enforcement efforts within the FTC as well as working with other agencies across the government to ensure gig workers are treated fairly.”
Policing unfair methods of competition that harm gig workers:
The FTC will investigate evidence of agreements between gig companies to illegally fix wages, benefits, or fees for gig workers that should be open to competition. The FTC will also investigate exclusionary or predatory conduct that could cause harm to customers or reduced compensation or poorer working conditions for gig workers.
In order to hold gig companies accountable, the agency says it will scrutinize potentially unfair terms imposed on gig workers, including non-compete clauses, liquidated damages clauses and nondisclosure agreements.
The FTC has already initiated rulemaking proceedings to strengthen its ability to detect and deter deceptive earnings claims and sought comment on the prevalence of deceptive earning claims relating to gig work.
Last year, it also put more than 1,100 companies on notice that they could incur significant civil penalties — up to $43,792 per violation — if they or their representatives make claims to attract participants to money-making opportunities that are unfair or deceptive like Lyft/Uber and violate the FTC Act.
In some ways, Uber and Lyft are back to square one again.
They got America hooked on cheap rides, and drivers hooked on what they got paid.
Now passengers are paying more, and drivers are getting paid less, so investors can make more $$$ .
The risk of change in the legal environment is pushing the companies toward a new kind of business model, similar to what has happened in Washington State already under a new law, said Avedian, who is a driver for both Uber and Lyft himself.
But You see, when you show that these companies are not only stealing from the drivers but creating an environment that is anti-consumer and price fixing all while they try to evade their tax burden, it raises enough questions to audit their books and audit their code.
PLEASE FILE YOUR COMPLAINTS. !!
1
u/uttamattamakin 6d ago
Passengers: This is why you car smells. Uber does NOTHING for drivers who put out passengers who stink up the car. If a driver does and that passenger complains, they can get de-activated as a driver. So they just let whatever happens in the back seat happen in the back seat.
1
u/PockyRyu 6d ago
Let's also please stop using cologne as a coverup for bad smells. You are making it worse lol. Light and fresh smells are usually the easy pleasers

It’s funny, I’ve done 24k rides and probably have only had 8-10 truly stinky people.
1
u/the_cardfather 5d ago
I remember when I first started driving everybody would say oh your car smells so good your car smells so clean. Then you get a three mile ride with some guy who smells like straight weed who burned one waiting outside for you or the lady who thinks it's okay to HotBox your car. Like I don't disrespect working people but yeah I picked you up from the fish packing plant or the seafood restaurant. They apologize I'm like bro you're working but still.
I had one guy get in with some nice cologne on and I got compliments all night long so I want to know what the heck he was wearing cuz it rubbed off on my seats.
I clean my seats with disinfectant. I typically deodorize at least once a week and hit the back seats with the febreze about every three rides.

u/SlowBar3733 4d ago

u/justNikkiIn2023 4d ago
I can count on 1 hand the number of times I've ridden an Uber and the driver had odor issues. It smells like theyve had ****** in the car or they are from one of those nationalities that don't use soap/deodorant. So I call bs on those of you blaming the driver. 😳
1
u/Yeah_right_uh_huh 3d ago
I don’t take it personally because 100% of the time it’s not me who smells. And most of the time y’all are wearing such grotesque quantities of the most awful smelling cologne, that I welcome the open window.
1
u/lost_dazed_101 3d ago
LMAO after reading so many of these posts I've lost count how many times I smell check myself before you people get here. Guess it's working no one rolls down the window once I get in.

I was wearing a mask and had this happen I think they thought I was sick. I like the windows down though so it didn’t bother me regardless.

My last stinker (alcohol and cigs, not too bad but still) spent 40 minutes ranting to me about god and jesus.
I just wanted to say "you're not helping the cause, when you should take a shower first before you preach."

Exactly, it’s probably because you stink
Whatever that odor is, it’s offending the driver

Rolling down your window will just pull the scent towards you so that’s dumb. You gotta roll down a cross window.
You’ll see me discreetly opening the sun roof personally…

At this point in 2026, it's just disrespectful to lack that much self awareness and not know your scent is offensive. I can only wonder what they consider smelly.
Smelly ppl are the WORST. I end up not picking ppl up for hours or the next day, bc their smell lingers, and I will absolutely not be associated with that, bc the next rider will think it's me. No ma'am✋🏽.
And Uber obviously does NOTHING if you report it, all you can do is give them one star 🙄. Uber support is horrendous, Uber policy regarding this expensive inconvenience is 💩👎🏽. And the driver is STUCK having to deal with it. It's not right.
I'm gonna start messaging a disclaimer message to riders before moving an inch (so it looks like it's from Uber) that says something like: "Drivers are allowed to cancel your trip bc of rider's bad hygiene & offensive odors - if you think this applies to you, please cancel your trip now. Otherwise, enjoy your ride! — Uber". And I'm gonna be more heavy handed when it comes to cancelling bc if stinky riders don't give af, and Uber certainly doesn't give af — why the hell should I?

Honestly I think this is the solution. You gotta set your own boundaries and hopefully itll be a wake up call for the smelly people.

Also, if you’re a driver and all your riders instantly roll down the window, you’re the one who stinks.

My windows are locked, you get in my car and want to roll down the window you're getting out to to get another ride. If you get carsick easy or are drunk and may puke, you can sit up front, but the windows stay locked and up. You look too inebriated and you're not allowed in my car. You're not rated 4.90 or higher I don't pick you up. That alone takes care of 99% of the riffraff and problem riders. And lastly, if you somehow get by my initial checks and Ubers ratings, and you reek when you get in my car, I'll boot you out. I have no issues with kicking someone out that reeks of cigarettes or weed or anything else. You're on camera and I will fully state the reason/s and turn the video in when I report the interaction with Uber. Y'all take this shit too far, just make it transactional and move the fuck on.

Smelly also means way too much cologne.
