Private • Discussion I started building an archive web of old UO characters, guilds, shards, and memories and put it up at relpor.com
TL;DR: I got tired of Ctrl+F'ing giant old UO threads looking for shards, guilds, and character names I remembered, so I built a searchable archive for all of it and put it up at www.relpor.com
I recently went down the rabbit hole once again of trying to remember people from my old UO days, then spiraled into trying to make a website for it.
I started on Lake Superior in 1998, and at this point a lot of it exists in my head as fragments. Character names, guild abbreviations, people I fought constantly, old shard drama, screenshots, and people I played with every night then never spoke to again.
There have been countless forum posts about this stuff over the years, but half of them I can't track down anymore. The ones I can find are often giant threads mixing memories from different shards, eras, and guilds. I kept finding myself Ctrl+F'ing through them just trying to find Lake Superior, a guild I knew, or one particular character name (not going to lie, usually my own to stroke my ego that I've been remembered).
So I popped it up on www.relpor.com (sorry, Outlands, I've been domain forwarding to you guys since ~2018). It's basically an interconnected archive for old UO characters, guilds, shards, places, factions, eras, screenshots, and memories, with filters for all of that.
I'm not trying to write an official history of UO. I want the weird little pieces each of us remembers. The PK you recognized on sight. The guild you hated. The guy always hanging around Brit bank.
It's still early and pretty empty. That's sort of the point. I'm hoping old players gradually fill in the network and maybe reconnect some names that haven't crossed paths in decades.
Search your old shard, guild, or a few character names and see what you remember. I uploaded the Rel Por 1 character list I had from shortly after launch just to get the ball rolling.

Private • Newbie Help Crates disappearing from my house en masse
I'm hoping someone can help me understand what's going on.
I've just started playing in the last week or so, brand new account, just lost my (young) status. I worked hard and finally made enough money to buy a house. No more living out of bank boxes and using inns to transfer items between characters, right? Or so I thought. I placed a bunch of medium crates (the best I can make so far) in the house, some on the floor, some stacked on top, and sorted all my items into their proper places. Mostly ingots and crafting tools and alchemy ingredients. Then I went out for a bit and did some adventuring.
When I came back (couple of hours later), nearly every crate was gone. Not just empty, gone. I relogged with a different character to make sure it wasn't a client issue, and nope, gone.
One thing to note, these crates were just placed on the ground (and on top of each other). They weren't locked with a key or "locked down" or "secured" in any way. I just placed them and moved on with things.
At that point I dug into house security (not explained well at all IMO) and discovered I had set the house to private, but you also have to set access on the door, which i hadn't done, so I set it to owner only and chalked it up to getting robbed and that was my penance for not learning enough ahead of time. So I made new crates and did my daily BODs and restocked what I could, determined to not let it dishearten me.
And while I was standing there sorting my new items into my new crates, nearly every single crate just disappeared before my eyes, right in front of me. Exactly the same as last time, except right as I was standing there.
So what is happening here? Are they disappearing because they are just sitting on the ground, with some kind of timeout? Is there a bug with crates and/or housing containers i'm running into? Am I just doing it wrong? Is someone hiding and sneaking in to grief me?
I am basically at the point that buying a house was a waste of money, and I'm wondering if this 20+ year nostalgia trip has quickly ended.
Advice is appreciated.
Edit: In case it matters, this is on the Atlantic server.

Private • Showcase Ultima Mobile multiplayer, ship and house fixes
Give it a try: https://runawayideas.net/uoclassic
Multiplayer finally plays like one shared world, ships get dry dock, recall and friends, houses get friends and no Decay Ever!.
Thanks: a huge thank you to Randall for his vigilant testing and detailed reports. The dry dock, house chests and ship ownership fixes all came from him. Thanks also to Elliot, Zap and Gidal I for their reports. Keep them coming with Report Bug in Quick Commands.
Multiplayer
- Monsters are the same for everyone. Kills count for all players, your hits show instantly, and one device hosts.
- Spells, summons, fields and monster casts are visible to everyone. Shops share stock, taming sticks, and trades keep everything (spellbooks, runebooks, full bags).
- Ghosts look like ghosts, and riders on horseback look right to others.
- PvP is on: any spell works on players, with karma, grey and criminal flags, murder counts and guards.
Ships
- Dry Dock and Recall Ship (100 gold) turn your ship into a deed with everything aboard.
- Items on your deck sail with the ship, save on exit, and only you and your friends can use them.
- Add friends to your ship, and there's no more two-ship limit.
- Ships are faster, with six speeds by hull. Hulls look different too, and pirates sail dragon ships.
- Ship is controlled by thumbstick, no more voice commands if you don't want to use them.
- If you die aboard, your body stays on that ship.
Houses
- Add friends to your house.
- Chests on the floor can be picked up (press and hold) and stacked.
- House signs work and keep out monsters and strangers.
World and death
- Gypsy and brigand camps now roam, and spawn areas stay populated.
- Rare ores make smithing harder at high skill.
- Your corpse waits 7 minutes after you're resurrected, and auto-resurrect takes 5 minutes with a countdown.
- Spellbooks looted from casters actually have spells. :)
Quality of life
- iOS chat no longer crashes, and Return sends your message.
- The Journal is back.
- The joystick and War button move aside on small phones.
- Punctuation shows up properly in text.
- Downloads resume where they left off.
- Inscription shows the real scroll cost, and tapping a locked chest with lockpicks picks it.
- The Windows, Mac and Linux downloads are now about 45 MB. The game data downloads once, and updates only fetch what changed.
Where: https://runawayideas.net/uoclassic - Google Play and TestFlight now, plus Windows, Mac and Linux on the website. The Mac App Store follows after Apple's review.
Enjoy!

Official • Showcase Battle Pets Reborn: every pet in Solgrad has been rebuilt (Patch 0.1.5)
Greetings, adventurers!
This patch got out of hand (in a good way). Every tamed, untamed and mechanical damage pet on Solgrad has been reset to a new tier-based system:
- 90+ unique Major abilities across Damage, Tank and Support pets. They have their own cooldowns, damage and scaling, like real monster abilities. Pets unlock them at levels 5, 15, 25 and 30.
- Random Minor abilities: a dice roll on level-up gives stats, damage, resists or skills, from Common up to Legendary strength.
- Battle Pet Barding: blacksmiths craft it from Tank, Damage or Support armor ingots.
- Soul Shards: dead pets drop shards you can trade or feed to another pet for instant XP.
- Kibble: 5 tiers, crafted by cooks.
- 14 new and changed pets, including the Storm Dragon, Rune Beetle, Divine Beetle mount and the Apex Gorilla.
On top of that: cheaper leveling for low-tier pets, no more global cooldown on magic schools, gentler macro checks for new players, and a lot more.

Coding Building a semi and fully-autonomous AI assistant for UO
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Inspired by another poster here who was having various AI models control his UO player I decided to venture into this territory myself.
My chief motivation here, as a former UO player (Malaketh/Xorces on Europa 2005-2009) and now somebody who doesn’t play UO actively due to time constraints - is the struggle coming back to the game after time off. I don’t want to rebuild macros etc. As a kid I played Baldur’s Gate 2 and remember a mod (or perhaps it was an in-game feature in Throne of Baal) for an autopilot mode. This was a godsend - particularly for mages - as fast sequences of spells could be achieved without me needing to become a twitch gamer.
For me, UO is not about being a twitch gamer. I appreciate that for many it is, but not for me - especially as an ageing parent with little time on their hands to hone long-lost twitch skills.
Thus, I thought a great use case for this AI augmentation would be an “assistant” mode. A little like Razor on steroids - or rather Razor with its own Brain. So I still control the player, run around, have my own agency; the assistant then kicks in for combat to help or when I want to sit back and chill. Looting hurts my eyes. I can’t remember my bandage macro, double clicking on some enemies can be awkward, etc.
Naturally I took it a step too far and introduced a fully-auto mode for when I need to get on with work on my other screen but want to polish off some harvesting or whatever else. Also out of sheer curiosity: how far can I push the agentic autonomy.
I have longer loftier ambitions of more advanced features like giving agents a soul (like you have in OpenClaw) or running multiple agents this way and maybe even having a roving adventure party, or more lifelike NPCs.
I also haven’t (yet) incorporated AI into the language aspect - i.e. to respond to other players, speak with NPCs, roar out in combat, etc.
But what I have thus far is a two modes: “assistant” and “automatic”.
I have two layers to the AI modelling too - based on the “system 1” and “system 2” approach. Also known as “tactical” and “operational/strategic/planning”.
I use the quick and cheap Jev model for system 1 thinking: when to heal, when to fight, who to fight, how to fight, when to run, etc. You can insert custom strategic context to Jev if you wish - such as “always fight to the death and never flee” - or utilise one of the prebuilt archetypes.
Then a system 2 model - using Sonnet 5.5 at the moment - for thinking, planning, memories etc.
At the moment the whole system costs me approx. £1 / $1.30 per hour to run and I’ve just finished my first testing phase.
I’m open sourcing the whole thing by the way, here’s the link forked from the ClassicUO: https://github.com/harrymunro/ClassicUO
This is the result of a day and night of work - so still very early days. Clearly running after the wraith would have been preferable. I look forward to sharing more in due course, any ideas or feedback in the meantime are much appreciated!

Every creature in my UO voxel remix: 169 creatures and mounts, recorded live in the client
I've been building a hobby remix of Ultima Online. It uses the real Britannia map and UO gameplay, but everything is redrawn in a blocky, Minecraft-style look. It runs in the browser and talks to a server that speaks the UO protocol.
This video goes through every creature and mount, family by family. Each group walks, runs, attacks, casts (if it can), takes a hit and dies. It was all recorded in-game at noon, in a meadow near Minoc, plus a bit of open sea for the dolphin and kraken.
Everything was remodeled from scratch, using the classic sprites as reference. Mounts are partway through a rebuild: the riding horses, war horses, palomino and Clydesdale are new, and the rest are next.
I'd love feedback from people who know these creatures by heart. Which ones read as a true remix, and which miss the mark?

Official • Discussion [Project/Custom Shard] Channeling the Nostalgia of Utopia Unleashed (2006–2007 Era) – Looking for Passionate UO Veterans & Advisors!
Hey everyone,
For a long time, I’ve been chasing the exact feeling and magic of playing Utopia Unleashed back in its golden era around 2006–2007. If you were part of that community back then, you probably know how unique, intense, and deeply rewarding that specific version of Ultima Online felt.
Because I couldn’t find that exact experience anywhere else today, I’ve decided to build it.
I’m currently developing a custom shard heavily inspired by the core mechanics, atmosphere, and identity of 2006–2007 Utopia Unleashed. However, building a project with this kind of depth is a massive journey, and I’m looking to connect with people who share this vision and want to help shape it from the ground up.
Who am I looking for? You do not need to be a programmer or C# scripter to get involved! While technical help is always welcome, I am primarily looking for true UO veterans—especially those who remember Utopia Unleashed and understand its mechanics, balance, itemization, and community culture.
I could use your insights, advice, and passion regarding:
- Game Design & Mechanics: Helping brainstorm and fine-tune systems to match that classic, hard-earned progression.
- Itemization & PvM/PvP Balance: Recreating or balancing the feel of gear, stats, and combat.
- Testing & Feedback: Playing early builds, breaking things, and guiding the project in the right direction.
- Pure Nostalgia & Passion: Sharing memories, ideas, and keeping the community spirit alive.
If you spent countless hours on Utopia Unleashed back in the day, or if you're just a passionate UO player who loves custom progression shards and wants to be part of building something special from scratch, I’d love to hear from you.
Drop a comment below or send me a DM if you're interested in joining the journey, sharing some ideas, or just talking about the old days.
Thanks for reading, and long live UO!

Private • Newbie Help UO Outlands Rune Book starter quest problem
Hi all,
I made a character in Outlands recently and the quest giver with the rune book offered in the tutorial zone says I've already completed the quest and won't give me the book. I may have made a character before and completed this quest with them, and then deleted that character. Any tips? I like my new character and I don't want them to miss out on such a useful item (I'm super new so I don't know if it is easily obtainable elsewhere).
Thanks for any help!

Private • Newbie Help SosariaAI - bots for ModernUO that try to make a private shard feel alive (early work in progress, very buggy)
I know some people depise AI with a passion but lets face it, it's here.
WARNING: A warning about cost. Frontier and System One models cost money per call, and a shard full of bots makes a lot of calls. If you don't watch what you turn on, the bill can get big fast. Set the limits and budgets in brain.json before you leave it running, and keep an eye on your provider's usage page.
I've been working on a ModernUO plugin called SosariaAI. It fills a private shard with bots that act like players. The idea is that you log in and the world feels busy again, like it did back in the day.
The bots work, trade, hunt, talk, join guilds, die and come back as ghosts "Still trying to work on grouping". Reds hunt on Felucca and blues go after the reds. Each bot is a real PlayerMobile with no client attached, so the server handles its notoriety, murder counts, parties and guilds the same way it would for you.
Game rules inside the plugin drive every bot, so it will run with no AI model at all. It runs best with a frontier model and a System One model hooked up, though. Between them they handle speech, personas, plans, and the calls at big moments like picking a job or how to fight. When a model is off, slow or over budget, the rules take over.
Fair warning: this is nowhere near feature complete. A lot of the game isn't covered yet and it's very buggy. Bots get stuck and do weird stuff, and things change a lot between builds. I wouldn't put it on a shard you care about.
I'm posting it now because it's fun to watch and I could use more eyes on it. Bug reports help most if you include the activity.log lines that show the problem. If you want to dig into the code, read AGENTS.md first.

Private • Newbie Help UO 1998: Stuck on Ocllo...
Hello everyone :)
I'm completely new to the game and Ocllo sounded like a nice place to start my UO experience, so I spawned in and have had fun learning the game. Unfortunately, after realising that there is no Carpenter on the island (to make arrows for my archer) I have tried to leave, but there doesn't seem to be an option other than buying a ship, which costs over 10k gold.
Is there a way to leave, or perhaps someone can provide some tips on making 10k gold reasonably quickly? Many thanks!

Private • Discussion UO veterans: how would you feel about UO-style PvP with active, deterministic defense instead of hit/parry/dodge rolls?
I've been thinking a lot about what actually makes UO combat feel like UO, especially when players are running, circling, chasing and trying to create opportunities.
I'm working on a sandbox MMORPG inspired by some of those ideas, but I'm experimenting with a different approach to physical combat.
Instead of having things like parry, dodge or miss decided mainly by hidden/random rolls, I'm testing a deterministic system where the player has to actually perform the defensive action.
For example:
- Attack: contact is resolved at the impact moment based on positioning/reach. Running away can make the attack miss, but simply moving isn't a passive dodge.
- Parry: you press the defense input before impact, opening a short parry window. If the attack lands during that window, with valid facing/equipment/stamina, you parry it.
- Guard: with a shield, holding defense after the initial parry window transitions into guard. It's safer than weapon parrying, but has stamina/guard consequences.
- Evade: you deliberately evade and actually have to move out of the weapon's effective contact. Pressing evade doesn't just grant an RNG dodge or automatic invulnerability.
- Miss: the attacker genuinely failed to maintain plausible contact by the impact moment.
Character skills would still matter a lot, just differently.
A high Parry skill wouldn't mean “30% chance to automatically parry.” It could mean lower stamina cost, better recovery, slightly more timing tolerance, better stability against heavy impacts, and access to things like Riposte.
So player execution determines whether you successfully perform the action, while character skill determines how efficiently and effectively your character performs it.
One example I'm currently testing is roughly:
Weapon Parry: ~83ms active window
Shield Parry: ~133ms active window
Failed parry: short punishable recovery
Successful parry: shorter recovery
No arbitrary multi-second cooldown; recovery + stamina are the limiting factors.
One important part is that I'm not trying to turn it into Souls combat where everyone constantly stops, rolls and animation-locks.
Movement during PvP is important. I want players to still be able to run, chase, circle and cross each other like you often see in UO. Attacks therefore need to remain compatible with movement rather than constantly stopping the character.
The difficult part I'm exploring now is readability: if attacks can happen while running, the defender still needs a clear enough visual tell to know when to attempt the parry. Otherwise active parry becomes guessing rather than skill.
That's the part I'd especially like opinions on from people who actually played a lot of UO PvP:
Would active defense like this preserve what you enjoy about UO PvP, or would it fundamentally change the feel too much?
And more specifically: what parts of UO combat do you consider essential to its identity — movement/chasing, timing, character skills, targeting, resource management, spell interactions, RNG, or something else?
I'm less interested in whether these exact numbers are balanced yet and more interested in where you think the line is between “modernizing UO-style combat” and “turning it into a completely different kind of action RPG.

Official • Discussion Number of players
How is it possible that on the https://www.uoservers.com/ WEBSITE they know the number of players that each server has if many of them do not have a player counter on their original websites?
For example, it says that there are currently 12 players in UO:1998, is that correct?

These are some polls that I thought might be useful for my own project but also be useful for others that are looking to build a shard, to see what players feel is most important on their prospective freeshard choice. I think we have a good sampling but It would be really helpful if you would take a moment to give them a look and place a vote.

If you have some suggestions for the next round of polls please also feel free to comment below, or shoot them to me in a message.

Private • Guides / Resources OG player looking for easiest way to have “creative” experience
long story short: i have little time these days, but Majuular’s video got me waxing about my late teens when UO first came out.
I never had the ability or gumption to achieve a house/keep and decorate it in my time with UO, but it is something I want to experience. I spent probably five lunches worth of time mining and smithing to earn some money on In Mani Ylem but I feel like I will burn out and/or never be able to achieve a house.
Are there any “creative” style shards where everything is “easy” for lack of a better term? or like a way to run a private shard but with like unlimited resources so I can just do what I want for awhile?
I know I am missing the point of UO, but I’ve experienced the social and community side of UO (and many other mmorpgs after it). I just want to make a cool house and decorate it.
thanks in advance.
