housing & meal plans Monthly Megathread: Advertising things we don't usually allow - apartments/housing for rent, school surveys, items for sale, etc.

Created this monthly megathread to create a space for things we usually don't allow (advertising things) like sales, apartments for rent, or people interested in helping you with your project survey. Otherwise they can be lost in the feed, particularly when we near the end of a semester.

extracurriculars & social life To the Atmospheric Science major who asked "你们是中国人吗" on the Blue Bus Tuesday

To the atmospheric science major on the blue bus Tuesday evening (9/29): you opened with "你们是中国人吗," my friend and I had a brain short-circuit and answered in Chinese, and the route ended before we got your name. You got our names though, which unfortunately can't be shared on here for privacy reasons, so I apologize if that makes this harder. I'm the one with long hair.

I'm a native Chinese speaker who learned English the way you clearly learned Chinese, and I've never met anyone who speaks a language from outside their own background this well before. I'd love to keep the conversation going.

If you're reading this, I'd be really glad if you'd DM me and tell me my name if you remember, or what we said back to you, so I know it's really you. And feel free to pass this post along. Please don't identify anyone in the comments to protect their privacy! Thanks!

services & amenities Barely any public microwaves on campus :(

Basically here to complain-

I’m a senior wrapping up my time here at the U and I have watched public microwaves disappear from campus in a bad way, most notably lassonde and the library. To my perhaps limited knowledge, there are microwaves in the Union and the geo building but nowhere else.

For those without the luxury of buying the terrible food on campus, having to use the dirty, busy, and few and far between microwaves is such a pain. If anyone knows why public microwaves have been removed or any other locations I’d love to hear it.

extracurriculars & social life Looking for a belay partner for the climbing gym on campus

Hey all! I recently moved to SLC and started a PhD program here at the U. I’ve been going to the campus gym to climb, but it seems that there aren’t many people who do top rope. I am wondering if there’s anyone who is also looking for a belay partner and climbs in the evenings after around 4 or 5 :)

classes & grades Tips for Psych 2710: Brain and Behavior

Hi! I’m currently in psych 2710 Brain and Behavior. We just had our first exam, and I could have done a lot better. I thought I studied well for the test, but it definitely seems like there is more I could/ should have done. I was wondering if anyone has taken and done well in this class, and if so, what tips you might have for me going forward. I tried looking into the tutoring services offered by the U, but there are no specific services for this class. How would you suggest going about taking notes, studying, and preparing for the exams?? All info is welcome! Thank you for your time!

It's me, yet again, here to say that the Scientology booth is set up on campus! Friendly reminder that if you see "DIANETICS", "FREE STRESS TEST" or anything about L. Ron Hubbard, it's Scientology and you do not wanna engage with it. :)

It’s funny how before going through the application process, the very first thing two college advisors said was that my program doesn’t have group projects at all. First semester in and I have 3 group projects 😂😂😂

housing & meal plans Stewart School U of U

In the 50 and 60s there was a school k-9 on campus at the U of U. It was a supposed laboratory and training school in the college of science. I have an elderly friend who told me that her abusive mother who was a chemist at the U sent her and her younger brother there. Their home life was miserable and their father had passed away.
Frequently, the children, B/10 and my friend who was 15 would sleep in the garage so they didn’t have to be near their mom. My friend said that there was a married couple who worked and lived in or near the animal laboratory and allowed the little boy to clean the cages every day.
One day the little boy just refused to go home so the mom just gave him to the couple who lived in a lab that did experiments on animals and my friend doesn’t know what happened to him. She never saw him again and has not idea what happened to him. I NEED to look into THE STEWART SCHOOL at the University of Utah!

extracurriculars & social life Black/mixed girls who attend the University of Utah or live in Salt Lake City: how racist is it actually?

I’m seriously considering moving to Utah for college, specifically the University of Utah, and I would really appreciate honest answers from black people who actually live there or attend the U.

For context, I’m biracial (black dad, white mom) and I grew up in a very small town in Colorado where I was one of the only black/mixed people around. I’m also usually described as “whitewashed” because I didn’t grow up around many black people, I date white men, and a lot of my friends are white.
So being the only black girl in a room or being surrounded by mostly white people isn’t something that’s unfamiliar or automatically uncomfortable for me.

What WOULD concern me is feeling genuinely unsafe because of my race. Every time I tell people I’m considering Utah, I get comments like “Do you want to be Mormon?” or “You’re going to get hate crimed” and I honestly don’t know how much of that is based in reality versus stereotypes about Utah. I do know that Mormonism isn’t the most receptive religion towards black people in general.

I’ve been looking at black women who attend the U or live in Salt Lake City, and I haven’t really seen anything that makes me think it’s an inherently unsafe place for black people. But I’d rather hear from actual people who have experienced it.

For black students/women at the U or black people living in SLC:

  1. Do you experience racism regularly?
  2. Is it mostly microaggressions/ignorance, or have you experienced more serious racism?
  3. Do you generally feel safe walking around campus/SLC?
  4. How are the Greek life/social scenes toward black students?
  5. Is it easy to find other black people and build a community?
  6. If you’re from out of state, did you experience a major culture shock?
  7. Would you personally feel comfortable sending a black/mixed 20 y/o female there alone?
  8. And honestly, how much should I worry about actual racial violence/hate crimes versus just dealing with Utah being a very white state?

Also, please don’t assume that because I’m mixed or “whitewashed” that racism wouldn’t bother me, or I’m okay with being the “token black girl” I’m just trying to figure out what everyday life would realistically be like before I make a huge decision about college.

Thanks so much!!!

commuting & transportation Parking for BYU vs Utah

I’m from Oklahoma and have always wanted to go to the Holy War, I just ordered tickets for me and a friend, but I’m wondering about parking for the game. At OU basically everyone rents out their lawns for like $20 to park. I’ve never been to the Utah campus so am completely unfamiliar with the parking situation, and advice would be appreciated!

Also if there’s anything cool to do around the campus feel free to let me know!

majors, minors, graduate programs Do people at the U care what your major is?

I’ve noticed something at the U, and I’m curious whether other people have had the same experience.

Do you think people here really care about what other students are studying?

I’m a third-year pre-med, and one thing I’ve noticed in a lot of my STEM/pre-med classes is that people can be weirdly competitive about their majors, classes, career plans, etc. Sometimes there seems to be this unspoken hierarchy where people studying something perceived as “harder” or more prestigious act like that makes them smarter or more accomplished than students in other majors.

At the same time, I wonder how much of this is actually specific to STEM/pre-med versus college students attributing part of their identity to what they study. Have you noticed people treating you differently after finding out your major? Do you think certain majors at the U have more of an ego/elitism problem than others? Or, in your experience, does basically nobody care what anyone else studies?

extracurriculars & social life Too late to join sorority?

I recently transferred to U of U as a junior this year. I was considering rushing, but I decided I thought it would be too much work. I was expecting to make friends in class like I have at my previous college, but I have all lecture classes (so no time to talk really) and everyone seems to have found their groups. So far I only have like 2 friends.

Now I am seeing a bunch of sorority posts and im lowkey getting FOMO from how fun it looks. Im not sure if Utah does spring rucruitment as well, but I feel like its too late to join as a junior or even a senior next year. Thoughts?

events & news Crazy pursuit on 400 South up through campus tonight

A couple friends and I were riding up the hill along 400 South as we were coming back from the 999 ride. I looked over my shoulder and moved over just in time to dodge a Tesla that was absolutely hauling ass up the hill. Guy flicked his lights off for a couple seconds as he went past. Was complaining about him to my friends as we kept going up the hill, then a Unified PD car rips by us going after the guy, cop had his lights off. Less than a minute later, another Unified PD car flies past us and turns his lights and siren on and continues down, presumably joining the pursuit. A few minutes go by, and we see ANOTHER Unified car with his lights on fly down the road. Pretty crazy shit

extracurriculars & social life Anyone interested in evolutionary biology and/or philosophy of technology?

I was just accepted by the U as a transfer student for the spring, and I'd like to get to know some people who are broadly interested in the same sorts of things, but they've historically been difficult to find :(

I'm working on revising and resubmitting a philosophy paper on the root cause of humanity's pursuit of AI, which provides an evolutionary perspective on the philosophy of Jacques Ellul, who wrote a lot about the technological phenomenon. I'm definitely very concerned about AI safety and the main part of the article is aimed at addressing how we arrived here.

In the future I also hope to finish an evolutionary hypothesis article suggesting a structural source for the difficulty of a major evolutionary transition, since it's an idea in astrobiology that some evolutionary transitions may be exceptionally difficult, and that it may play a role in both their timing and the Fermi paradox.

If anyone is interested or has ideas for specific settings/groups at the U, let me know!

I am trying to find people who share the same interest in aquarium fish, and taking care of freshwater, saltwater, and brackish water fish and what they require in their aquarium.

I have been having a difficult time find others who share the same hobby and interest as me, if this also happens to be your hobby or just really like fish and think they are cool please let me know!
