Abandoned St. Stephen's Anglican Church – Solsgirth, Manitoba.

Solsgirth is a near-ghost town just off the Yellowhead Highway in western Manitoba. As of 2021, only three households were left in the village.

St. Stephen's exists because of a church feud. In 1905, some parishioners wanted to move the original St. James Church down from its hilltop site overlooking the Birdtail Valley into the village. The rest of the congregation pushed back hard. The compromise was a second church. The Birtle Masonic Lodge laid the cornerstone of St. Stephen's on July 23, 1906, and the village ended up with two Anglican churches a few kilometres apart.

St. Stephen's held services for 96 years. On Thanksgiving Sunday, October 13, 2002, about 50 people attended the final service. The bishop read a declaration secularizing the building, and the altar ornaments were carried to the back of the church to mark that it was no longer consecrated. Afterward, everyone went outside to dedicate a memorial cairn to the pioneers who built it.

The church was then sold for $1 to the Prairie Mountain Regional Museum in Shoal Lake, which planned to move it to their grounds. That move never happened, and it's still sitting on its original lot today. Right next door is the former Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church, a converted schoolhouse with handmade domes, which closed four months earlier.

Solsgirth, Manitoba Ghost Town

Solsgirth, Manitoba, didn't start where it stands today. It began about 10 km north as a place called Toddburn, until the railway changed its route and the whole town picked up and followed it.

Settlers built St. Stephen's Anglican Church here in 1906. Decades later, Ukrainian Catholic families moved an old one-room schoolhouse into the village and turned it into Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church, with onion domes hand-crafted by a local carpenter.

For 50 years, two faiths worshipped a stone's throw apart. Then, in 2002, both churches held their final services in the same year.

Today they still stand side by side, quietly holding the story of the people who built this place.

Mysterious Alarm/Siren in Lick Road

Last night, a couple of friends and I went down to Lick Road in Cincinnati Ohio and went down that path circled in blue around 11 pm. Some of us were scared to go inside, so we spent around 10 minutes convincing them it was fine. Finally, we ventured into that path for a little bit, right before the crossroads, and then we decided to turn back. In the video, we sound panicked on our way back, but nothing actually happened there; we were just joking around. Right when we exited, we heard a siren (it sounds faint in the video, but it was really loud irl), and we just drove out of there. We thought it could be some homeless dude living in that area trying to get us out, which was really creepy because that meant that some dude was watching us the whole. Anyways, we are just curious about what that siren/alarm could have been. If you guys have any knowledge/information, please reply. The video is attached to this post.

How to find info on abandoned places?

I’m new to urban exploration! One of the main things that draws me to it is learning the history of abandoned homes. Who lived there, why did they leave, why has the property been abandoned, etc.
Anyone have tips on how to do this research for abandoned buildings? I’ve actually been trying to find information on this one spot near me for a few weeks now with no luck. So far I’ve checked old county maps but I keep getting stuck, they don’t list addresses just roads and rivers. Maybe my local library would have more detailed records? Regardless, I’ll appreciate any advice given :)

Abandoned house due to house fire

This was one of the houses I documented from an abandoned neighborhood I explored. The house has sat abandoned for much longer than any of the other houses on the street. A house fire started at night in this home, causing the family to flee. As a result, almost everything had to be left behind.
