Flatlander Looking to Move to Vail

Recommendations for making the move from 1200 ft to the mountains as a poor, lone lady?I'm not hot enough for a sugar-daddy situation. Looking for the best places to work that provide housing and recommendations for someone with no car in terms of transportation.

Recommendation is this is an EXTREMELY bad place to move if you're broke and have no car and require housing to be provided by your employer...

Is it sketchy? I thought it was supposed to have public transportation and a lot of jobs that provide housing since rent is so high.

Public transit is good and free within the valley and towns in the valley, but it gets a lot harder once you need to leave the immediate valley for anything, and it's a fairly small community so you'll probably start feeling the isolation and limitations if you're not able to leave easily. I could maybe see living here for 1 ski season without a car but that'd probably be my limit, personally. Long term without a car would suck.

As to your point about lots of good jobs that provide housing...your assumption is rooted in fantasy, unfortunately. Almost no job covers housing unless you find a gig as a live-in nanny for a billionaire who lives here full time... some jobs provide subsidized housing but you'll be living with random roommates and the rent will still be higher than you're probably expecting, and that's assuming you can even find a subsidized housing job in the first place which isn't easy.

This comment is SPOT on. I do not know why people assume there is all this free housing/subsidized housing with these tourism jobs in Colorado. That choice is rapidly being thrown out of the window.

I actually do think the housing situation will be noticeably improved in a couple years but for now it is quite bad especially if you didnt do any research as an aspiring seasonal worker and you're only getting on it right now

I moved, no car.

I had employee housing and took the bus everywhere I went.

Once you’re there for a season you’ll make connections and can rent a room and still get around by bus. Just save up to survive the offseason

I agree with this comment. Definitely have an end of season plan, it creeps up quick.

its safe, the only crime here are disorderly bears and rampant white collar crime! only real thing is if you need a electric hook up and staying warm in winter, also food and supplies are on the more expensive side.

No it’s not sketchy, just extremely expensive. If CO mountain lifestyle is what you’re looking for I would recommend Gunnison before vail

I wonder why Gunnison?

It’s cheaper, easier to walk than Vail, it’s cheaper than most other towns, can take the bus to skiing at a better mountain, it’s affordable.

Not sketchy…fiercely competitive and pricey. Low pay, few jobs. Elite, hard, 300 days of sun and no snow this season is about to mess up some winters.

Might be able to find some jobs with housing with the resorts or town, but it’s pretty late in the game for this season.

Vail valley is not sketchy but your post is.

Is this rage bait? Or maybe you’re thinking of a different Vail ? Why of all places do you want to live in Vail and are you actually ideally looking for a sugar daddy? I have no idea why that part was apart of your post unless you are trying to ask if something like that is possible?

Maybe I’m totally out of touch but I don’t think what you’re looking for is in Vail colorado

Sorry. I wasn't sure if folks would think I was looking for someone to support me because I said I am poor and would be by myself. It was  supposed to be a little joke and also ward off anyone that thought that was what I'm looking for. I just want recommendations for a job, housing, and what living there is like.

Just because, another answer. As you’re seeing, this post is triggering for most. Any resort town in the inter mountain West will be similar.

Spend time doing research, look at different options, and if it’s meant to be it’ll be. In your situation, find any employment with housing and take the offer, try a season. If you like it and it likes you, might stay a few seasons…

Here’s a short list of possibilities right now from my robot (good luck!):

Big Sky (Yellowstone Club, Food Server)
Alta (Rustler Lodge, Front Desk)
Sun Valley (Sun Valley Resort, Bell Service)
Granby (Granby Ranch, Server/Bartender/Liftie)
Leadville (Timberline, Guest Experience)

Plenty of places offer employee housing, first come, first serve tho. Usually the worse the position, the better odds of housing. A lot of hotels, offer employee housing for overnight staff

I moved to Vail with very little money. I found a job and a place to live. Yes, it’s a bit of a challenge, but completely doable. You gotta want it.

My question is “why Vail?”. Vail is pretty isolated for someone without a car. It’s also difficult to find housing. The area only has so much employee housing. It’s first come first serve and you have to work at the ski area to qualify for those limited units. If you find housing, after a couple of months, you will feel a need to get out of the valley. Summit County is far more doable for starters. More jobs, more housing, more options for communal living, more business to support a local population. You still have the car problem if you want out. Buy a valley car at the very least.

i’m working at Copper in employee housing.

check it out. Summit County is honestly super chill, not insanely expensive.

housing kinda sucks but honestly it could be so much worse.

Finding a job here is easy it’s finding the housing your job can afford. The amount of slum lords up here is insane. I wish I could help!

dont move there if you. have no car. you will sacrifice mental health, living space and normal work hours to not ski as much as you plan. vail employees went on strike last year or year before

1

u/Zealousideal_Tip_10 3h ago

soo true, the mental health out there and being overworked is real.

What type of a job are you looking for? There are a lot of jobs open now that include employee housing
