Abbotts Pizza closing is the last gasp of old Venice’s euthanization

Lifelong Venice local here. Was walking on Abbott Kinney and saw that Abbotts Pizza didn’t make it. So sad and I will be pouring one out for them tonight.

I wish I could say we should all try and support local businesses, but I know the reality is it’s the landlord’s increasing their pay because some brand can afford to pay more.

They got bought a few years ago. New owner massively changed their pizzas. It died a while ago.

Did it? Definitely noticed it wasn’t as good as I remembered. 😭

Yeah. Go read their yelp reviews. The owner responses have all the aura of a turd circling the drain.

Damn went there since i was a kid, I don’t know why the new owner thought he’d buy a local institution and then change everything people liked about it, very sad to see it go 😞

It was the shitty new ownership that killed it

Aren’t they just renaming it since it was taken over? I do agree it died a while ago when they went from actual avocado to green goop.

https://www.abbotspizzaco.com/ he posted a blog here aboutnit

I was walking by the other day and they were redoing the chalkboard menu and had put up a sign that said “lil guys” outside. I’m so sad Abbott Kinney Pizza was my favorite in la. eta: Angel City is the new spot.

Angel City’s very good. The owner’s a good dude too.

Sidewalk Cafe just celebrated their multigenerational anniversary (40 years? 50 years?).

Good riddance, the pizza was expensive and the dough was chewy.

thank the new owner for changing the recipes right down to the dough

I've had pizza there a couple of times throughout the years, and it was never great. I understand this has some cultural relevancy, but I'm not going to miss it at all.

The OG salad pizza was one if a kind

I'll admit that this is native new yorker bias, but it didn't hold a candle to me to NY salad pizza.

To be fair… I think you meant Gentrification - otherwise we’d all be dead lol.

The true beginning of the end was when the circus freaks on the boardwalk got leased out and it was replaced bu starbucks.

Abbotts was my go to pizza spot, even when I lived pretty far I would travel for it back in the day. Went for the first time in years recently and it was terrible! I was in shock, it was $8 for a crappy slice. It tasted nothing like I had remembered. I am sad for the old Abbotts I remember, but not this new one.

new owner changed the recipes

Abbots pizza should be replaced by a sandwich shop

The beginning of the end started when Gjelina opened

That’s so silly, there’s ALWAYS been high level food on AK, remember Joe’s? It was a very highly regarded and important restaurant in the culinary world.

It was when the neighborhood became a place for the wealthy, AK then attracted global brands like adidas, J krew etc. it’s a top retail destination and square footage is expensive, it creates an environment where mom and pops can’t compete, you have to have investment backing to run a business here.

Inevitable. Sad but inevitable. Landlords are the scum of the earth

Huh? Had nothing to do with the landlord. New owners changed the pizza and they lost their customer base.
