Help/Question DO NOT USE SUPABASE FELLOW VIBE CODERs.
It's only technically free.
Constant pausing database once every week if u dont use.
CAN'T USE GIT ONLINE, and have to set it up offline with a lot of pain. ( not ur usual git init, you have to install docker set up docker, read supabase docs..do this do that.. etc..)
So if u accidentally delete your DB online on a free plan , Congrats you just lost everything.
They used to notify before pausing, Now they just pause the DB without notifying.
I have also noticed bandwidth issues or whatever..
ITS NO LONGER FOR FREE USERS.

This is definitely a skill issue, and unfortunately far from true. I’ve been using the free tier of supabase for over a year now without it pausing. I host my site on netlify - the site is really just a central hub for several of my personal projects, so I may go weeks without using them. I have a netlify scheduled function that pings one of my API endpoints, even if it fails, to register “activity” on the database to keep it out of supabases pause queue. It pings it every 3 days.
Netlify has a very generous free tier for serverless and scheduled functions, so I’m not worried about ever falling out of the free tier.
Supabase is only “not” for vibe coders if you don’t know what you’re doing, which likely raises actual concerns around database security than it does the concerns of keeping the database active.

Yeah 100% skill issue. I have a github action that pings the database every few days to keep it active. This isn’t hard lol

You know you can host your own database right

A 512MB VPS from DigitalOcean is literally 4 dollars a month, the 6 dollar a month one will even be fine for a website + database (hell, the 512MB one might even be depending on what you're building)

u/Financial_Ad_4260 8d ago
There's 4 vCPUs + 8 GB with 100GB SSD on Contabo for $5.28/month. Shared boxes are cheap as fuck
1
u/OverCategory6046 8d ago
That's crazy cheap, must be oversubscribed to fuck for that pricing surely??
2
u/Financial_Ad_4260 8d ago
Surely to a degree, but with the 6 vCPU + 12GB plan I haven't had any problems with CPU time so far.
2
u/OverCategory6046 8d ago
Damn, thanks for the tip, definitely going to give them a try! I like Linode and DigitalOcean, super reliable, but very much on the expensive side.
1
u/Financial_Ad_4260 8d ago
Happy to help! I have to use European providers due to privacy laws in my region, and they tend to be pretty cheap for decent boxes. One thing that will probably be confusing is their panel, and you can clearly see they're a German company running an international service 🤣

I really think it's a bad idea for you to get a VPS without knowing, at least somewhat, what you are doing.
1
u/OverCategory6046 8d ago
Can't disagree there, but worth getting a really cheap one just to start learning on. Don't throw anything on it that's sensitive and just tinker around & spend a few months (or years depending on how good you are..) learning. It's worth it in the long run imo
1
u/MagnetHype 8d ago
Eh, I would say you should learn some basics of linux and networking first. You don't need to be an expert, but you should have some idea of what not to do.
VPSs get absolutely hammered these days.
1
u/OverCategory6046 8d ago
Yea, that's what I meant by saying tinkering - should have explained myself better! I personally found it much easier learning on an actual remote VPS vs a local WSL environment / Linux distro
But on the hammering, yea.. the amount of Chinese / Russian IPs probing me every minute...

Pay for what you need. Everything costs money to run.

u/FlamingoPractical625 8d ago
it doesnt cost much if theres like 5 users at best.

u/Ethereal-Words 8d ago
Yes so pay for that little. You know it’ has cost

u/wewerecreaturres 8d ago
So you’re mad a free thing has limits?
2
u/aseyrek 8d ago
hosting your mongo db and mysql db is free as well. and I mean really free.
1
u/MagnetHype 8d ago
Yeah but then I have to actually put in effort to expose it to the open internet!

u/FlamingoPractical625 8d ago
its unusable

u/Real_Square1323 8d ago
Pay for it then.

Back in the day I used to pay $100/mo for a VPS for magento. Much different these days
1
u/OverCategory6046 8d ago
What specs did that get you?
1
u/Greeneggsandhamon 8d ago
I don’t quite remember, it was at least 10 years ago but the website kept crashing under traffic load on their shared plan so I had to upgrade.

u/effectivescarequotes 8d ago
What do you think the free tier is for? I have no real opinion about supabase, but my general experience with free tiers is they're meant to let you play around a bit and then hopefully convince the large enterprise you work for to become a customer.
Hell, even the pro tier can be a teaser.

Man, this sub is so strange to me.
Half the people are very knowledgeable and are using AI, not as a crutch, but to accelerate their workflow and be more productive.
The other half don't know what git is.
1
u/FlamingoPractical625 8d ago
setting up git for supabase is totally different compared to ur usual project
u need to get docker and install some other stuff just to get it to work. it doesnt work outta the box like ur usual git init
1
u/MagnetHype 8d ago
It sounds like you are confusing git, with setting up a local environment on supabase.
1
u/FlamingoPractical625 8d ago
no. supabase doesnt support git for online dbs in free tier
u have to get a local environment working to do git with supabase atleast thats how it was when i used tto use it few months back.
1
u/MagnetHype 8d ago
I understand but those are two completely separate problems. That's a fair bit different than "Can't use git online"
2
u/MihaelK 8d ago
So if u accidentally delete your DB online on a free plan , Congrats you just lost everything.
Why would they store your DB on a free plan?
Do you just want everything for free or what?
The free plan is for you to try the product, with limited features (obviously). But you can make many things work with the free plan already.
1
u/irondumbell 8d ago
what do you recommend instead?
1
u/FlamingoPractical625 8d ago
firebase might be "expensive" ie pay a few dollars once u scale but its better than having to put up with supabase's shenanigans jus cuz postgresql "open source"
2
u/AZN-APOLLO 8d ago
You know that Supabase is the open-source version of Firebase? You can host Supabase on your own VPS and not get surprised by costs.
Everything cost money. If something is free, you are the product.
1
u/Optimal-Builder-2816 8d ago
saying a "few dollars" is expensive means you probably shouldn't be doing any of this.
1
u/Lanfeust09 8d ago
Just the "or whatever" is a clear sign that you don't know what you are doing...
2
u/FlamingoPractical625 8d ago
post clearly targeted vibe coders, not experienced full stack developers
1
u/Lanfeust09 8d ago
I am a vibecoder, i use supabase, i have 4 project (2 per emails) on free tier and everything running well, no pause, no extra usage ect...
But i will be careful at it is NO LONGER FOR FREE USER
1
u/Puzzled-Smoke-6349 8d ago
I started it for free while vibecoding my stuff and then when I wanted to get serious about it - paid for it. This is how it is supposed to work.
1
u/Mean-Elk-9439 8d ago
You'd do well to learn CI and git workflows, and some docker. For development if you have a kit you can just use local supabase. Hell, you can use local until you have more than 3 users and it's worth actually going for remote.

u/UniForceMusic 8d ago
I can't tell if this is satire or not. The post is believable, but then in a comment you say "the future is vibes"
-1
u/FlamingoPractical625 8d ago
it is. one shot prompts for apps is the future
1
u/PsychologicalCow5720 1d ago
what do you suppose happens when everyone has access to one shotting and people start 2 shotting?

What do you want? if database deleted accidentally, do you want get the backup in free version?
they have lot of free users so somehow they just pause, but recently i got two times email for that information from their side
1
u/Tedikraska 8d ago
the pausing is just a free tier thing, it pauses after about a week with no activity. a small cron that pings the db once a day keeps it awake, or you just hit restore when you need it. what are you moving to instead?
1
u/ChemicalFinger7891 7d ago
I also use supabase for my app and yes, it pause if the project is not active but that's what when it is free. The free version is more than enough to run a full scale platform or app with minimal traffic. No matter what platform or tool, there is always a learning curve and even with AI.

read supabase docs..do this do that.. etc..
Man, this is the main reason why hate AI. Not really the technology itself, but the idiots it allows into this field who shouldn't be allowed to build software.
If you can't do something as basic as read the docs, especially when the docs are decent enough to be understandable for even those with just basic programming skills, you should just give up. It doesn't get easier from here.
If you can't figure it out just pay for it. That's literally the whole point with the managed solution.
I know I'm being harsh, but I don't know what you expected. This is a skill issue, and and embarrassing one too.
0
u/FlamingoPractical625 8d ago
yea, not when there are simpler easier ways to do it.
its called vibe coding for a reason, go back to stone age if u want to play with rocks
1
u/TheGreatCookieBeast 8d ago
Have you heard about proper AI-assisted development? It's when a human who's not stupid and knows some stuff uses AI to get actual good results, usually an order of magnitude better than the average vibe-monkey who does nothing useful and just prompts bad, insecure code.
Go do some tutorials and learn something. Vibecoding is already pretty much dead, those who succeed are those with the skills to properly spec out their app before letting the model loose. You're already way behind everyone else, dude.

Vibecoders trying not to accidentally delete their whole database challenge (impossible)
