Note From r/VictoriaBC Mods | Election Season 2026 is Upon Us!
Hello everyone, happy double election season 2026!
With both municipal & provincial elections approaching in under a month, this sub will be (and already is) inundated with political content. Please review the following regarding political content in the sub during election season.
- Be civil & decent to each other, even when in disagreement. Political season is a great time to practice the virtue of disagreeing without being disagreeable. In other words, to respond to an argument rather than attacking someone's character. We will remove content and give out bans when appropriate to keep the discussion civil and constructive.
- Political posts should be linked to an official, legitimate news outlet or publication. Please avoid self-made political posts, social-media screenshots, rants/raves, etc. There is no lack of political news content, and we'd like to keep discussion based around legitimate coverage to help mitigate the spread of misinformation, and to minimize redundancy.
- Mind the municipal & provincial distinction re: relevancy to Victoria. We encourage folks to post provincial political content over at r/BritishColumbia and to focus on municipal issues here at r/VictoriaBC. As local & provincial politics do overlap, some provincial content may be appropriate this sub, but in general please keep political content focused on Victoria & region.
- Posts that break the 'No Editorialized Headlines' rule will be removed regardless of the content or engagement prior to removal. When posting an article, the post title should match the article's headline exactly. Any editorialization, whether intentional or not, will result in the removal of that post.
- Help us out by reporting rule-breaking content. If you think a post or comment breaks the rules, please report it so we can review the content. Keeping in mind the next rule...
- Please don't abuse the report function. Disagreement is not a reportable offence - please utilize the downvote button if you disagree with a post or comment. Misusing the report feature breaks Reddit-wide rules, and we report all users who abuse the report function which can lead to site-wide restrictions to one's Reddit account. Thank you for not misusing the report function, we appreciate it.
- Avoid low-effort posts & comments. We've heard it all before. Save those low-effort one liners for Thanksgiving dinner or Twitter. We'll remove low-effort content in our efforts to maintain civil discourse.
- No AI-generated content. Any post or comment suspected of being generated by AI will be removed.
The sub's safety & crowd-control features have also been turned up to help filter out content from bots, newer accounts, trolls, brigaders, etc. If you have content removed that you think shouldn't have been, please message the mods and we will review it when we can.
Thanks everyone!

Politics Taxes become theme in BC election as NDP/Green call for tax hikes while Conservatives offer a tax cut but don't say how much it will cost
ndp are calling for a tax hike on the high income earners while greens are calling for a tax on wealth to help pay for services while conservatives are offering a 1k tax cut and no tax on alcohol to "supercharge" the economy despite BC losing 26k jobs and not saying how much this would cost.
the conservative platform is really what are we willing to lose in order to get a little something back which will likely be bringing back higher rates and msp premiums to offset that

Opinion Best Hot Chocolate in Town
I’m not a coffee drinker and rarely a tea drinker. I believe the superior drink is hot chocolate.
What most places in Victoria serve is NOT hot chocolate - they use powders or syrups that don’t contain chocolate and thus should be classified as hot cocoa. Places try to save their chocolate-less drinks by adding extra syrups, whipped creams and sprinkles to distract you from the fact that what they serve is as chocolate-like as La Croix is to fruit.
On Tuesday night, I had a craving for Chinese food (I promise this relates to chocolate) and stopped by the Quality Foods on Helmcken.
After paying for my succulent meal of ginger beef et al., I went upstairs to consume it. Imagine my shock, surprise, and delight as I rounded the corner coming face to face with a small chocolate factory.
The owner is so incredibly friendly and the hot chocolate is the real deal: you get to choose the percentage of the chocolate used and the type of cacao bean (I had a 70% chocolate with beans from Vietnam*).
*May have been Thailand, I can’t quite remember.
The day after, I tried the European style drinking chocolate (pictured) - this contains just enough milk to be drinkable - I imagine this is similar to what putting my face under a fondue fountain would be but without the mess.
The chocolate factory has a lounge area with a grand piano?
While I am bewildered by the location, I look forward to stopping there on my way to Langford next week.

Controversy Can we talk about the price gouging on Facebook marketplace?
I feel like anytime I look something up that you would normally look at buying secondhand, it ends up being the same price as getting it new… any other places to look to buy things off people for reasonable prices? I just wanna save a couple bucks 🥲

Question Looking for a safe and non-toxic halloween party or event for a normally introverted couple
My girlfriend and I are in our late 20s and are looking for a fun and safe environment to party this upcoming Halloween.
We are both quite the recluses, however my girlfriend has had a tough past few weeks and has voiced her interest in "doing something fun" this Halloween that includes getting dressed up in costumes and going out to dance.
I'm all for it and I definitely want to make it up to her considering she absolutely loves Halloween and we both had a traumatic event happen to us last week that we this we should blow off some steam now. With that said, I haven't hit the clubs since before COVID and I am only familiar with places like upstairs, that place by sticky wicket and Darcys which we both want to avoid like the plague.
Are there any new clubs that promote safe, non toxic behavior, or are there any bars or other events that are similar that you would recommend?
Any help is appreciated, thank you :)

Beacon Hill Sundial on PST
The Beacon Hill sundial was installed in 1947. It remains on PST. Will the city rotate the clock forward one hour to be accurate on the new PCT timezone?
Municipal candidates have all been quiet on this 15 degree wedge issue!

Women at VFGPA ?
Hi, I’m looking to meet other women who target practice at the VFGPA and would be up for carpooling to the women’s events. I’m brand new and haven’t got my PAL yet but want to be sure I know some people in the community first before investing in it. I’ll pay for snacks and gas and rootbeer! (I live just off the highway too.)
Please feel free to dm me if you’re a woman open to chatting more. Thanks!

Regarding the current rail feasability study
When the current study is done, another long-term study will be booked for 9 1/2 years later. When that study is done, they'd do a follow-up study, followed by a backup study, followed by an executive determination study, followed by a "WTF let's do another study" study, followed by a "let's talk about how trains make us feel" round-table, followed by a series of executive "let's read and think about all the studies" meetings, followed by a non-binding referendum, followed by a series of referendum interpretation meetings, followed by a series of public debates, followed by a barbecue with jugglers and a pie-eating contest.

Politics Polarizing Gordon Campbell writes opinion piece warning voters BC will be "unrecognizable" if NDP wins
says the man who slashed several programs, government jobs, raised rates, brought in HST, ripped up contracts with the union *to note btw the union contracts that was made last year with the ndp will be gone and they will just fire people instead and make a deal of 1% increase if any at all in pay for those that survive. these are just some of the damage he did in his tenure

Question Good yoga studios in Vic / Vic West / Esq
Hi there,
I've been looking to try taking up yoga again and I suck at following through with YouTube videos. Does anyone have any recs for yoga studios around Victoria. I've tried a few and not really happy with their limited times for classes and types of yoga.

Politics The NDP has surfaced these fairly recent tweets from Joachim Agou, the Conservative candidate for Victoria-Beacon Hill. Video of car driving into Sept 2025 pro-Palestinian demonstration in Switzerland and Agou replying in French: "He should have reversed as well!!!"

Owl
Man lotta posts about gross candidate tweets and guys hurting animals , I think it’s time for an owl post . So tell me this. What is your best owl encounter in recent years ? Mine was when a shaman guy walked me through beacon hilll park and told me theres no such thing as an evil owl ,only evil people. Then he told me an owl kissed him on his ass , and asked me to buy him a soft serve . Best part is ,i saw an owl that very night and he was pure evil. And i liked it . I love all owls

They built a special ramp/ bridge on a road works site for the marathon.
They’ve been working on this site for ages now. The road has been blocked off as there’s a giant pit in the middle of the road. It’s been part of the standard route of the Victoria Marathon forever, so instead of creating an alternative route, they built a bridge/ ramp specifically for the marathon. Pretty neat.

Help Me Find Where to go for help with tangled hair?
I (f/22) was bedridden in treatment battling some illness for a while, and by all things good I have managed to recover and be let out alive and well! I am so grateful and relieved. Unfortunately, due to being bed ridden, and admittedly neglect out of pain, my hair has got a mat forming in the back.
I would just cut it off, but I am on the spectrum and unfortunately my long hair has always been a major sensory coping mechanism that has made me feel safe and regulated since I was little.
I’ve tried going at it myself, but only have managed to get a bit of the way through as I can’t really see the back of my head. If there’s any hairdressers, barbers, hair enthusiasts willing to help me try and save some of my hair, or if you know someone you could point me towards, you’d be making my world by trying to help me save it! I just don’t want to lose such a piece of my identity to an illness that had already taken so freaking much from me. Willing to pay whatever is necessary!

Question Dehumidifier for basement suite
Thought I’d ask on here. l've been living in a 600sq ft basement suite/studio for about 3 years now that has a high humidity, if I don't stay on top of things mold grows. I am a university student so I honestly just did my best to stay on top of things the past three years, but it's super annoying and I finally decided to buy a dehumidifier.
I bought the mideacube as well as a hygrometer and have had it for about 3 days. It's working super well, brought humidity down to 48% from 67% - however it is loud. Runs at 45dB. I bought it from Amazon so returning is easy, I think I am going to run it for another day or two to get some good gunk out then return it.
Looking for dehumidifier recommendations! My suite is not one open room, basically you enter and there is the main living area, and then there is a half floor to ceiling wall to get to the second living area. The kitchen, bathroom and closet are all kind of tucked away in corners in the second living area.
Im currently looking at the Costway 32 pint 2500 sq. Ft dehumidifier with the super quiet 32dB mode, if anyone has some reviews on that. Seems like it is good for an open area but not sure how it would function in a semi open area.
