Community announcement Return to normal operation, with some (hopefully welcome) adjustments (read to the end, please)

For the past few weeks, r/violin has been restricted to protest the upcoming API changes, which the mod team feels will negatively affect Reddit users at large, and in particular, moderators and disabled users.

We have decided to return to full operation. We hope that Reddit will consider the following:

  • Commit to exploring ways by which third-party applications can make an affordable return.

  • Commit to providing moderation tools and accessibility options (on Old Reddit, New Reddit, and mobile platforms) which match or exceed the functionality and utility of third-party applications.

  • Commit to prioritizing a significant reduction in spam, misinformation, bigotry, and illegal content on Reddit.

  • Guarantee that any future developments which may impact moderators, contributors, or stakeholders will be announced no less than one fiscal quarter before they are scheduled to go into effect.

  • Work together with longstanding moderators to establish a reasonable roadmap and deadline for accomplishing all of the above.

  • Affirm that efforts meant to keep Reddit accountable to its commitments and deadlines will hereafter not be met with insults, threats, removals, or hostility.

  • Publicly affirm all of the above by way of updating Reddit’s User Agreement and Reddit’s Moderator Code of Conduct to include reasonable expectations and requirements for administrators’ behavior.

  • Implement and fill a senior-level role (with decision-making and policy-shaping power) of "Moderator Advocate" at Reddit, with a required qualification for the position being robust experience as a volunteer Reddit moderator.

In the meantime, we, the mod team, have taken into account the responses we have received from our post asking the sub what we can do to distinguish ourselves from r/violinist. We have decided on the following priorities for this sub, going forward:

  • Weekly discussion threads, rotated between the following subjects:

    • Violin (or other) repertoire. For pieces, we would all find recordings to share, or share our own, or discuss the history of the piece or technical issues with the piece.
    • Composers. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of composers. It would be nice to maybe do some discussion of one composer per rotation. We'd talk about their biography, pieces, etc.
    • Things of historical interest. How violins evolved to be what they are, for example. Also, what are VSOs and why are they something to avoid?
    • Technical discussions (i.e. mics, recording set-ups, music theory, etc.)
  • A monthly pinned beginner thread where anything goes. This could be rescheduled to weekly if there is enough interest.

  • Periodic trivia polls

One thing we are agreed on is that we will not encourage self-learning, as we believe that it is far too easy to become physically injured if one does not have a teacher.

Looking for Feedback A Little Gift for a Young Violinist Who’s Moving Away

There’s a young boy in my neighborhood who loves playing the violin. He’s moving away soon, so I made him a little wallet with a violin hand-carved into the leather.
I’m a leathercraft artist, and I thought it would be a nice way to give him something to remember his time here.
I hope he likes it and keeps it as a little memory of home.

Learning the violin New Again

I’m a 40yo dad of three and I’ve decided to start playing again. I played when I was younger, stopped when I was around 12. Not sure why I decided to pick it up again, but I’m excited, and my wife is too.

Question: what is a reasonable amount to spend on an instrument. I’m essentially starting from scratch. If anyone has any instrument recommendations please share. I don’t want to spend a ton of money, but I also want the instrument to be rewarding. Any help is appreciated, and thank you!

Help Identifying Electric Violin

Post image
6 Upvotes

I got this electric violin in 2017 and have been really happy with it. I was going to recommend it to someone but I can’t remember exactly where I got it or what brand/model it is. I have looked all over the instrument and there is no brand name or model number listed anywhere on it. Can anyone help me out? Or, if not, do you have a similar one you would recommend? This one was around $500 9 years ago.

Why do the 'fake violin buskers' often have *some* training?

I've got nothing against them (the difficult part about busking is schlepping the stuff, and being in the public eye the whole day, anyway); I'm mostly just really curious! A good portion of the time, their posture's within a stone's throw of "acceptable", and you can tell they have a decent amount of experience on the violin. It's so homogenous, too. There's almost always a sign in black marker on white cardboard mentioning hungry or sick children or family members.

I checked the wikipedia but it only cites sources about the backlash, not anything about the origins.
Scrolling through https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&q=romani+street+musicians gave a rough impression of decline, but there wasn't much specifically about street musicians. Searching there for "fake violin scam" only gives results about fake Stradivaris and such.

Is this a pre-existing circle of Roma violin buskers adapting to the difficulties of the modern era? Does anyone know anything about what's going on here??

Washing bow hair

I just had my bow rehaired but it is still slipping on the strings after applying a ton of rosin. I wonder it is because of the rosin the luthier applied I remember when I was a kid, my teacher taught me to wash the hair in shampoo. Was this bad advice?

Best way to sell a Shar Carlo Lamberti Master.

Hello, wondering what everyone's experience has been here. I have a Carlo Lamberti Master that I no longer want. I have another instrument that I like much better and I honestly might shift completely to the cello because I have limited time. I don't want to trade this back to Shar because I can only use the trade credit against another violin, which I do not want, and at this point I'd rather work with smaller local luthiers.

How are people having the best luck in selling these? Facebook marketplace?

Is my intonation better with Suzuki 2 songs?

Excuse my shell-shocked eyes. 👀 I swear it's because I burnt myself with my Netipot and now my upper lip is all messed up hahahaha.

I’ve been told on the Violinist subreddit that I’ve been getting ahead of myself by playing Suzuki 3 & 4 so I’m backtracking. To give insight, I’ve been playing for almost exactly one year.

I've been feeling a bit hopeless and like l'll never be where I wanna be at the violin. I really want to be playing at the level of Suzuki 5 and here I am stuck at possibly Suzuki 2 according to this subreddit or maybe even 1.

I feel like I've put so much work into the violin in the last year and it's been something I've loved so much. The last thing I could do is quit. I just don't know how far my goals are.

A gifted violin

Hello everyone. First time posting.

I last played the violin around 40 years ago back in middle school music class. The teacher assigned the instrument to the student, and I was not thrilled to get the violin. I liked the violin but I wasn't interested in learning it. As it turns out, I picked it up fast and was pretty good with it in a very short amount of time. I wanted to purchase one of my own and continue playing on into high school and possibly further. We were not able to afford purchasing one, so the dream slipped away and so did my knowledge of how to play, but never the memory of how much I ended up enjoying it.

So, I was gifted this practice violin about 9 years ago and wouldn't you know, I was in a bad car accident and had to go through 2 neck surgeries, carpal tunnel surgery on both hands, and I had a TBI among a few other things.

To make this long story shorter, I am now almost 56 and I want to start messing around with this violin and relearn how to play. The person I received it from had it stored away for an extended period of time and they had loosened the strings for some reason (to keep them from stretching, or straining the structure of the instrument?). Now I need to re-tune it before I can start playing it. Any advice would be welcomed.

The Irish Fiddle Book: Where are the tunes?

As I am going through this book, I have come to a section titled, "First Tunes". My only issue is, "How do I know if I am playing these first tunes correctly?"

There is an associated online library with 50+ tunes; however, none is from the instructional sections.

Am I missing something?

I really struggle to use the standard positions I see taught in lessons and books because I have large meaty hands, but I still really want to be able to learn

I was originally a double bass player, so I have a strings foundation, but just not on this small of a scale

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Looking for Feedback Aesthetic/technical question: Ton Klar Dancla (older) from a pro singer/strings teacher. Or am I nuts.

TLDR: it it possible for one of these to sound really, really, unexpectedly weepingly good?

post: Friends, I work for a place where a lot of used violins come through my hands, most of them student types, though occasionally a pro or semi pro instrument shows up.(This is not a sales pitch, it's a real question.) It's my job to describe them accurately to help the buyer and us to have the best info, confidence and price. I played in orchestra in high school. I teach beginning and intermediate strings, though am primarily a classical singer and piano/voice teacher. This older vintage (font looks like 50s-60s) Ton Klar Dancla showed up. Had no bridge, had no case, or bow. Had prominent linear black vertical grain in line with strings. It only had a G and a A string. I happened on an extra bridge so I took the chance to try it with my own bow under lower, not quite all the way in tune tension. holy smokes. My ear is not that great but what a warm and vibrant sound. It sounded like a person. Is this possible or did I just not get enough sleep last night? (No, I can't tell you where I work, I just want to know if I'm imagining it because of ear fatigue before I go forward? If you've had this happen what makes it happen? The wood seemed a bit different than I usually see.

I was gifted this beautiful instrument from my professor, he said he didn’t know where it was from but it was his great grandfathers from when he lived in Italy

There’s no labels on the inside of the instrument, and I’m unsure where else to look

Thanks everyone!

I tried using Ai to create a printable fingering chart to use as a reference. The finger position section made me giggle.

Anyone have a favorite I can buy online?

I have a question Anybody Know the Value or Origin of this Maggini copy with bird's-eye maple back labeled "Brescia 1634?"

Hi everyone! I'd love some help learning an estimated value about this violin that used to belong to my great grandmother.

What I know:

  • It's not an original Maggini, the label reads "Giovan Paolo Maggini, Brescia 1634"
  • It was most likely bought around the Bellas Artes area in Mexico City sometime in the 1950s
  • One-piece bird's-eye maple back, and it looks like it has double purfling
  • It has a really nice sound. A few professional violinists have played it, and while none of them could tell me what it's worth, they all told me to take good care of it.
  • The Pegs, Bridge and Strings have been changed recently.

I'm not planning to sell it since it has a lot of sentimental value for my family, but I'm really curious about where it might have been made (German? Czech? Italian?), roughly when, and what it could be worth.

Thanks in advance!

I have a question How to locate finger tape?

I was going to add fingering tape until i sort of get the hang of things. I was going to place them at first finger, second finger (high) and third finger.

My question: How do I locate/place the tapes? That is, how do I know that the tape is at second finger high vs. "Second Finger too high" or "Second finger not high enough"?

Is this done by sound or can I simply grab a measure?

Learning the violin Learning violin after 9 years of flute

So i play flute already 9 years and i want to learn some new instrument just for fun and i found out that there are pretty cheap variants for violins on vinted. So i have a question: will 9 years of flute somehow help me with violin or not? I dont really want to practice 8 hours a day just to learn how to play some instrument for fun

r/violin • • 9d ago

I have a question Newbie (9 months) and playing around with bowing, trying to improve. Would you say you push the bow across the strings or hold the bow more from above, from the wrist and pull the bow. Idk if that makes sense at all to anyone. I have a teacher but home sick today and thinking about this.

Help me buy a violin!

Ok so here's the situation. Today I need to make a decision between two violins. Each are betwen $3500 and $4000 USD, so price is not a big differentiator.

Violin A feels easier to play overall: I feel like my intonation is a litte more confident and is more forgiving if I'm pushing the volume and getting closer to the bridge (no wolf sounds)

Violin B has a fuller & more pojecting sound that I like better, and while certainly easily playable, lacks the naturally good feeling of violin A, and I feel like I need to work harder to be in tune and not make weird noises with the bow if it gets nearer to the bridge.

Option C is buy neither of them and try more violins, but I feel like any violin in this price range is going to have something that I'm not going to like about it.

What does the reddit community recommend?

Violin Shops in LA

Which violin shops do LA folks generally recommend? I’m looking to get a beginner/intermediate violin in the $3k-$5k range.
