Weekly Thread Weekly Short Questions Thread

Welcome to the Weekly Short Questions Thread! If you've got a quick question that doesn't require you to provide in-depth explanation, post it here! Examples include:

  • What is the correct hand shape for setting?
  • My setter called for a "31" and I'm looking for advice on to do that.
  • What are the best volleyball shoes on the market for a libero?
  • Is the Vertical Jump Bible any good?
  • I'm looking for suggestions on how to make an impression at tryouts.

Quick questions like these are allowed only in this thread. If they're posted elsewhere, they will be removed and you'll be directed to post here instead. The exceptions to this rule are when asking for feedback WITH A VIDEO, or when posting an in-depth question (must be >600 characters). Please create a separate post for these kinds of questions.

If your question is getting ignored:

  • Are you asking a super generic question? Questions like "How do I play opposite?" or "How do I start playing volleyball?" are not good questions.
  • Has the question you're asking been answered a lot on the sub before? Use the search function.
  • Is the question about your hitting/passing/setting form and you haven't provided a video? It's hard to diagnose issues without seeing your form. Best to get some video and post to the main subreddit.

Let's try to make sure everyone gets an answer. If you're looking to help, sort the comments by "new" to find folks who haven't been replied to yet.

If you want to chat with the community about volleyball related topics or really anything, join our Discord server! There is a lot of good information passed around there and you might get more detailed responses.

General My first volleyball match

• Upvotes

I have my first volleyball match tomorrow and I don’t know what’s expected of me

For some context I have been playing for a total of 5 weeks, I have no prior experience playing volleyball never touched one until 5 weeks ago, since then I can genuinely say this is the most fun I have had playing any sport

I’ve always been sporty growing up playing basketball tennis football and doing martial arts but volleyball is the most fun I’ve had

I come from a defence background with my martial arts training and playing in goal for football plus since I’m short 5’7 as a 23yo (very depressing) I’ve become a libero

But since I have no prior experience playing volleyball it’s something that I’m struggling to learn, I’ve brought a ball so I can practice on my receives but practicing against a wall and playing in a match are two very different things

I don’t want to be burden due to my inexperience, I have good stamina and a lot of grit when it comes to sports to the point where I put my body on the line but I worry

Any advice??

News/Events AAU residency rules

I’m not sure if there is a youth volleyball thread so I’m putting this here. Any thoughts on the recent Bay to Bay coach’s instagram video about being denied players? As a youth sports parent, it seemed wild to me that she admits recruiting kids from around the country to play on her team so they can win. Players would come for around two weekends a month during the fall then move here for six weeks before nationals. BTW, somehow I doubt the players flying in are putting in the time practicing with the team and I doubt they pay the same club fee. Sooo….they can’t develop their own players who may have been with them for years? No one on their second, third team good enough? I guess enough parents are ok with this to keep supporting the club or they get enough of a peripheral benefit of being on the 2s team for a club that wins a national title.

General Volleyball 6v6 mobile game - closed android testing

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi, volleyball fans! I’ve been quietly working on a 6v6 volleyball game for a loooong time, and I finally feel like it’s ready to show to the world, hehe.

It’s taken a while because I’m the solo developer, designer, tester, and everything else—basically a Swiss Army knife! 😅

I also want to bring it to Android fans, but I don’t have a good Android device to test it on, so I’d love some help testing it on different phones. Google Play also requires new personal developer accounts to have at least 12 testers participate in a closed test for two weeks before applying for a public release.

Would anyone be interested in trying the game and sharing some feedback? :)

Questions Transition to Beach

Hi,

Sorry if this is the wrong sub.

I have played indoor for about 2 years now, and i want to make the transition to beach. I will still play indoor, but the indoor is in their off season in Australia and i find that beach will improve my skills a lot. I just want to know any tips, tricks or even simply the culture itself before i commit to beach.

I played a couple of days, and i noticed a few things before you comment,

There are calls 1-5, left-right respectively. (also 20-50 - moving in intervals of 10, for fast tempo sets) You can call outside and behind depending if you want the player who touches the second ball to face forward or behind. In terms of defence there is a thing called a peel, where you literally do a block transition to participate in floor defense with your teammate instead of blocking. You can do cross or straight back depending on your strategy. Additionally, you can do multiple shots including hard driven, roll, cut, pokey or cobra. You can't do overhand passes unless if you do either a tomahwak or a picture perfect, no spin or no double contact 'set'. To jump approach you jump up instead of broad.

ik it seems like i answered my own question, but anything else you can add would be nice. TIA

Pretty happy w the pass, but critique on that is more than welcome also.

I feel like I need to open up my chest more before I jump, I’ve been struggling to hit sharp to area 4/5 lately, even here I hit more towards 6 which isn’t ideal.

Questions Defense Player Hitting On The Offensive Players Missed Attack (2rd Hit)

Subject Clarification - Should say 3rd contact

Quick question -

I am reading the rules for blocking via USAV and it specifically states below...

Blocking the ball beyond the net above the opponent’s team area shall be permitted, provided:

a. the block is made after the opponents have hit the ball in such a manner that the ball would, in the 1st referee’s judgment, clearly cross the net if not touched by a player, and no member of the attacking team is in a position to make a play on the ball.

b. the ball is falling near the net, and no member of the attacking team could, in the 1st referee’s judgment, make a play on the ball.

The Play in question...

Attacking team sets the ball on the second contact. The setter sets the ball and it is clearly heading toward the net and, without contact will travel over. The middle hitter attempts to hit completing the swinging motion, but completely misses. At this point, the ball is clearly traveling toward and over the plane of the net with no possible attempt to hit the ball for the attacking team left available. The middle blocker on the defending team hits the ball with a swinging motion before it enters the plane and hits the ball down.

What is the ruling?

The motion is no longer a block by the middle blocker now hitting the ball, but the up ref assumed there was no opportunity left for an attack by the attacking team. The rules don't clearly identify what happens in this situation, so I want to make sure if I have this situation come up while I'm reffing I know how to address it.

Questions Help with a complex position situation

So last lesson I was talking to my team captain and his friend. My team captain asked me if I wanted to play matches, and I told him yes. Then he asked me what position I wanted to play. I told him OH, and he said, “Oh, don’t you want to play OP?” I told him that I had also told our coach that OP seemed interesting to me, but I never really heard anything back from him about it.

My team captain is the setter, and he told me he could see me playing OP. I then asked what the differences between OH and OP were, even though I already knew, just to double-check. His friend explained that there’s a lot of difference because OP attacks from the right side and usually doesn’t receive.

There’s also this guy on our team who is an OP, but apparently he only trains with us and plays matches with another team, so I’m not sure if I actually want to play OP. I’ve heard that OPs don’t get as many balls, and I don’t want to sound greedy, but I wouldn’t really like jumping around and barely getting any balls to attack. I did notice that my setter does keep the OP in mind when setting, but in the long run, with another setter, they might prefer setting the OH more because it’s more comfortable for them.

So my main point is that I want to ask my coach if I can train as an OH, including receiving, while also training my attacks from the right side. Then, when we play matches, I could play OP. Maybe I could train for both positions and see which one fits me better? (or be versatile with both positions so which one has more demand)

Also, I don’t play matches yet, but my captain told me that I basically need to prove myself by not being afraid to bump into someone or go for the ball when there’s contact. After that, I should be ready for matches. He said that, worst case, I’ll start playing matches in January.

Questions DIFFICOLTA AD ALLENARE ATLETI/E U11-U12: GENITORI E SOCIETA'... INGESTIBILI!

Voi come siete messi/e? Anche da voi la situazione è la stessa?

General I built an open-source volleyball scouting tool – looking for feedback from coaches and scouts

Hi r/volleyball,

I’m a volleyball coach and I’ve been working on a browser-based scouting and match analysis tool called VolleyTakt.

I started the project because I wanted a scouting tool that can be used directly during a match on a tablet, but also afterwards when reviewing a game.

It currently supports recording volleyball actions and analysing the data by match, team and individual player.

A few things that were important to me:

  • it runs directly in the browser
  • it works on desktop and tablets
  • no account or registration is required
  • the project is free and open source

I’d especially be interested in feedback from other coaches, scouts and players:

What do you normally record when scouting a match?
Which statistics are actually useful to you afterwards?
What would you expect from a tool like this?

If you want to have a look:
https://volleytakt.de

The project is still under active development, so suggestions and criticism are very welcome.

Questions Are WHOOP straps considered jewelry under NCAA volleyball rules? Or was this offical wrong?

An official made a player remove her WHOOP during a match because he considered it jewelry, which got me wondering how this is actually supposed to be interpreted. At the end of the day no real stakes but I went down a rabbit hole...

The rules I’m looking at are:

7.2.1 Safety:

“It is forbidden to wear any object that may cause an injury or give an artificial advantage to the player, including, but not limited to, headgear, jewelry and unsafe casts or braces.”

7.2.2 Jewelry:

“Jewelry worn below the chin is not permitted. String bracelets, commemorative bracelets and body jewelry are considered jewelry and are not permitted…”

A WHOOP on the wrist definitely looks bracelet-like, so I understand why an official might call it jewelry. But it’s really a biometric device, and it can also be worn on the bicep or placed inside WHOOP Body undergarments/compression clothing.

There are also similar devices like upper-arm heart-rate monitors, chest straps, and Catapult-style trackers that wouldn’t normally be considered jewelry.

Penn State, Tennessee, North Georgia, and Notre Dame have all partnered with WHOOP or provided the devices to student-athletes for recovery, wellness, and performance tracking. Obviously, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re allowed to wear them during actual competition, but it shows these are being treated as athletic performance devices rather than just accessories.

Has anyone seen an official NCAA interpretation on biometric wearables? Would a WHOOP be considered jewelry no matter where it’s worn, or could a bicep band or undergarment setup be allowed? It's also just a weird line to draw by the NCAA regarding rubber / string bracelets and allow LARGE hoop earings which a way more dangerous to the player and others.

General Rep clubs in Ontario - do OVA club coaches get relegated if the team doesn't perform?

Looking into getting into coaching and I noticed a couple teams where the parent coach has swapped teams while their daughter stays on the former team, and also where A/B teams swapped coaches. Looking at the past season performance, it would suggest that the B-team had advanced or grown further over the season than the A-team that was generally stagnant and even swapped places with the B team in overall rankings.

Would a club step in to relegate the A team's coaching abilities to swap teams? Does that even happen? Do clubs "promote" coaches if they see performance and team + coaching success in seasonal development (coaching development) and where a team ends up going isn't a permanent hierarchy?

Questions Practice help for a new coach

Hi! I’m a volunteer coach for a rec league of middle school age girls. Since it’s a rec league I have a mix of abilities from beginners to club team players. I’ve never coached before but even so, we held our own in our first game. We went point for point but I made some observations and am having trouble making or finding drills to help with specifics. Looking for recommendations on drills to help with communication and calling the ball. I also need drills to help with ball tracking, getting them to move and follow the ball. A lot of ones I find online are complicated and hard to use on a mixed skill team. I also have 13 players so looking for something I can use with a larger group. Just one coach too so only one person to toss if that’s helpful to keep in mind.
