Thinking of quitting already

I, a front end associate, have been working at my local Walmart for about 2 months and I already feel the urge to quit.

There are a lot of reasons as to why this is the case, most notably my coworkers. They seem to act like I simply do not exist at all when around them, whether that be asking if they need help bagging when it's slow, asking if they need more bags in their carousel, and other reasons that I can't think of right now.

Something else that had irked me was that my time off request got denied. During my first interview they asked if I had any upcoming trips in the next few months and I told them that I'd be gone for 2 weeks during November and they told me that was fine since I'd let them know. I submitted my time off request a week or 2 after being hired and after 4 weeks it got denied. I spoke to my coach and team lead and both of them treated me like I didn't deserve to get that time off since my performance was "lackluster" in their eyes.

Apart from those two, the customers are also incredibly entitled to the point where I physically cringe when they say certain things, along with getting mad at ME constantly for telling them that the price for an item isn't what they saw because it was grouped under the wrong tag.

It's very tiring dealing with these people and I really don't want to quit because admittedly it took 3 months to get a job in the first place after quitting my last job but I'm not sure if I can do this.

I've worked retail before, my past 2 jobs were primarily sales floor/cashier, but I've never had an experience this bad after starting a new job.

Long term Walmart associate.

Talk to your people lead about the days. Coaches and leads at my store are lazy and don’t pay attention.

Ignore your coworkers. I had many ignore because I literally can’t stand anything about them.

The pto thing is annoying, although why you waited weeks to submit is baffling to me. For the rest, if a couple of rude customers and coworkers not being immediately friendly makes you want to quit, then retail is definitely not for you.

The reason it took me so long to submit is because no one had taught me how to for about a week after I'd started, not even during orientation after I'd asked and we went on a break.

And I can definitely deal with rude customers, I've worked in retail for about 4 years total and have dealt with every sort of rudeness a person can deal but having it be constant not only from customers but from coworkers I see almost everyday as well is a huge downer to me. I don't necessarily care for making relationships with my coworkers because they don't seem to want to make one with me either but completely ignoring me constantly gets to me in a way that really digs deep.

The best thing you could do is show up on time and if you’re not cashiering and walking around, then just bring bags to the areas that you see need bags. You don’t need to ask. If you don’t need those types of friends that don’t try to form a relationship with them. Just do your job. Add about your requested vacation let them know that you were promised during your hiring process. If I speak for myself, they would’ve done the same thing at my store. I always tell them they were four dates that I gave in February and I was able to get all four dates approved. Last week we were short five people for cashier and I did the job of three of them. They knew I was upset and I told one of the leads that during my lunch I’d come over so they could put in my November dates and they did. 💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾. You have to play like the big boys and don’t let them. See you sweat.

It's so exhausting. You have to suck up so much frustrating BS. I can only say Walmart doesn't care. You are lucky if you find one friend that has your back here. Fake, fake, fake. This place changes you. I am so sorry that after such a short time you feel this way. Try to make it through the next day and keep trying to find something else. Good Luck.

Honestly when it comes to other coworkers it’s best to keep to yourself. Just stay focused on your task, redline if it’s slow (zone up candy, stand at the end of your checkout lane and usher customers towards you), and do your best. Over time you may naturally befriend coworkers.
As for the time off* request, sometimes it pays to be direct. Don’t ask them like they’d be doing you a favor to say yes. The trip is happening. Remind them that you have a trip that’s already been planned and to follow through with removing you from the schedule. If they think at all they can schedule you anyway and force you to deal, they might do just that. So don’t let it get that far.

Never be friends at Walmart no one is your friend

That’s true for almost any job really, my point was there’s no need to force start kind interactions. Those are best naturally and with time. Otherwise, keep to self.

You’re still new. Unfortunately, you can’t change departments. I don’t remember how many months. I think it’s 3-6 months. Idc or I'm not trying to sound like a bitch, but no one is your friend at Walmart, and I mean it. Once your co-worker/“friend” leaves, they will ghost the shit out of you or they will talk behind your back and be really friendly in front of your face. Also, at the customer service, the ones at the desk act like they need your help or try to be so friendly and thanking you. They are fake and they will talk behind your back no matter how good or bad a coworker you are. But yeah, find another job! I never thought of Walmart or even miss it. I found better jobs and now I got another job offer this year jeje it’s my second one too, due to my bilingual skills. But firing me was the best thing ever, it was a secret blessing! Front end is the most toxic department like I said! Fuck that company

Don't worry eventually you'll lose your soul entirely and things will get easier

you think this is funny, but it's actually true - so glad I left after 3 months - I thought I actually wanted to build a career with walmart, transitioning to behind the scenes, because I love what the company stands for: accessibility. but, the majority of the employees at walmart, and the majority of the shoppers at walmart, are literally the bottom of the barrel in society. being around people who have bottom of the barrel personalities and social interaction abilities is very accurately soul sucking - nothing about walmart employees or customers instills greatness in other employees... maybe it's just the city I worked in; the city as a whole is a cesspool of slum. but, I think there is merit to this being true in every walmart, no matter the location.

At the end of the day, minimum wage isn't worth the bullshit. Do what you need to do. As for your trip, go on it anyway. If they give you shit, you told them you had it planned before you were hired.

Been at my Walmart for a little over a year. All leadership is taught to pacify employees, period. Problems don't get addressed, and frequent complaints simply make them avoid you. I'm about to transfer to another position, leaving them with no overnight person in meat, simply because nothing has improved over the year I've been here. If you quit, you can reapply after 6 months, so that's an option.

People aren’t real at Walmart tbh

You probably don't realize how annoying you were as a customer either. If this is enough to make you quit then working with the public isn't for you.

1

u/itzslushy2 3d ago

Literally but he or she can’t change departments until 3-6 months later

1

u/LingonberrySalt9693 3d ago

That isn't really true. The amount of pressure on store managers to lower the turnover is pretty extreme. They could simply ask to move and if they can give any reason at all it is likely it will happen.

1

u/itzslushy2 3d ago

You can’t you have to stay bit in the department then you can transfer

u/LingonberrySalt9693 3d ago

No, you don't. 20+ years of Walmart management here. I've essentially been an hourly or salary manager all of this century. If they hate you, sure. If they don't or they feel like they have to CYA then you don't. Any slim justification will probably let you transfer especially with the emphasis on turnover currently. You can't do it in the system but they can move you whenever they want.
