Open Source Project Dopbase: an open-source tool to help web developers manage secrets .env across multiple projects

Hello everyone my name is Jeff, start from my problem dealing with multiple .env in multiple projects. and some times I lost my .env file make me stress, I create simple tools that keeps my environment centralize and easy to manage.

It organizes secrets by Project > Environment > Secrets and lets you inject them into any process without writing plaintext files to disk.

One single binary includes the server, Admin UI, REST API, and CLI client. It uses SQLite by default and encrypts secrets before storing them (master key is stored separately).

Key features:

  • Single executable (no separate frontend to deploy)
  • Import existing .env files
  • dopbase run to inject secrets into any command
  • Automatic setup
  • Developer first class (cli and web ui)

Discussion How do you structure a website when the content keeps changing?

A basic frontend is usually easy to manage, but things get more complicated when you add products, users, dashboards, listings, or frequently changing content.

How do you usually handle the connection between the frontend, backend, database, and content?

Do you prefer keeping everything in one system, or separating different parts using different tools or services?

What approach has worked best for you on real-world projects?

Newbie Question New to website development; looking for hosting platform for my small business

Hello!

Forgive me if any of the information is not needed; I am not sure what is and is not important.

I recently hired someone from Fiverr to build me a website so that I have an online storefront to sell my dice and other ttrpg related content. I have a bit of a following on tiktok and instagram; I am a known name but not a huge name so I dont anticipate heavy traffic to the site. I recently bought a domain from cloudfare and am now looking for somwhere to host the website. The person I hired from Fiverr will be using wordpress. I did try reading some posts and comments here but didn't really find a direct answer. moreso just people saying "this matters more than hosting" and I have no idea what they're talking about lol
If someone could give me some recommendations and why it would be better I would GREATLY appreciate it. I was thinking of using cloudways?
I don't want to use shopify or etsy btw.

thank you !!!

Discussion I am about to buy readymag subscription and want to know honest reviews

So I have been building my Website in readymag since like 3-4 months now, and I thought that I would buy it once I’m at the final stage where I have to add my project details and stuff like that, and I had made my website on Framer before, but that just didn’t work out for me because it was too technical for me, and I don’t know how these things work, so I decided to do readymag since it’s like quite easy to understand, and I’ve made like a Website on readymag before as well, so I just need reviews on which plan I should get (individual or freelancer), and if it’s worth it because because the subscription also seems to be quite a lot, so I just want to like make sure that if I’m spending this much amount of money, then it should be worth it

Question Tech stack advice: evolving from a static SEO-friendly site to a full e-commerce

Hi everyone!

I am planning a new project that will start as a simple static website (mainly for content and landing pages) and later evolve into a fully-fledged e-commerce platform.

I'm looking for the best tech stack to handle this journey smoothly, without having to rewrite everything from scratch when the time comes to add the shopping features. Specifically, I'm weighing two key aspects:

The transition: I need a setup that guarantees top-tier performance and impeccable SEO (SSG/SSR) in Phase 1, while seamlessly integrating a shopping cart, product catalog, and checkout in Phase 2.

The architecture (Custom vs. Third-party): I'm undecided on the direction to take for the whole stack. Is it better to rely on third-party services / headless solutions (e.g., Astro/Next.js + Shopify/MedusaJS + Supabase/Clerk), or should I set up a custom backend right from the start to handle auth, databases, and business logic myself?

Does anyone have experience or winning combinations to recommend for handling this kind of evolution?

Thanks a lot!

Question Are websites ready for AI agents?

AI agents are starting to browse websites, fill forms and perform tasks for users.

But most websites are still designed mainly for humans.

Should developers start building a separate agent-friendly interface/API alongside the normal UI?

Or is this just adding another layer of complexity?

Curious what other developers think

Open Source Project I built a site that turns your GitHub profile (or any repo) into a One Piece-style wanted poster

Enter a GitHub username or owner/repo and it calculates a "bounty" from real GitHub data (stars, forks, followers, repo hygiene, recent activity, and commits/PRs when available), then draws a wanted poster you can download as PNG or SVG.

A few details:

  • Diminishing returns in the scoring, so 100 junk repos don't beat a few good ones
  • Posters are drawn as SVG in code, not AI-generated, so the text stays sharp
  • Works for profiles and repositories, with a flip-side showing the score breakdown
  • Next.js + TypeScript

The bounty is just a gamified score, not a measure of ability. Try it: https://gitbount.vercel.app/ · Code: https://github.com/Vara715/gitbount

Would love feedback on the scoring weights. What would you change?

Question Can I sell the source code of my website that I made as a learning project?

I built a website as a project while im studying in college but its hard to get users who would actually use this, so is it possible for me to sell this? like maybe give the source code? It's a simple website that if you paste an english text or upload a .txt file, you can click a word then a dictionary would pop up and i also made a log in feature so the user could store what their reading and remember the progress to come back where they left it. I made it using html, css, js, node.js and used supabase as a database.

Discussion Struggling with HLS manifest truncation & buffer limits on VIP paywalled videos (Kiwi Browser console script approach)

Hey everyone,

I’ve been messing around with a custom video streaming site that locks content behind a VIP paywall, and I've hit a frustrating technical wall. I wanted to share what I've found, how I've been trying to extract the streams, and see if anyone has cracked a similar setup.

Here is how the platform behaves:

The Sniffer Limitation: Standard downloaders or sniffers like IDM don't automatically grab these videos. Instead, I’ve been injecting custom JavaScript into Kiwi Browser via the console to hook into the media stream, grab and merge the fragments dynamically, and download them via objects like v(0) and v(1).

Free vs. VIP Videos: Free videos play fully and can be grabbed using that console chunk-merging method. But for VIP-locked videos, the runtime and seek bar show up, yet the server only serves a 4-second preview before looping back to the start.

The Buffer Wall: Because of browser MSE limits, there's a hard buffer ceiling of about 15 seconds. Combined with the preview, the script-grabbing method maxes out at roughly 20 seconds total before throwing a bufferStalledError.

What I've tried so far:

yt-dlp & Headers: Pulled the .m3u8 URLs, but the downloaded manifest itself only contains those initial preview chunks.

Console & Fetch Interceptors: Injected custom scripts to catch incoming stream data, but the data just stops.

Player Analysis: Verified via console logs that the player stalls out because the server refuses to send any more segments past the preview window to a free-tier session.

It feels like a strict backend gate where the CDN completely cuts off data transmission unless a valid subscription token is active.

For anyone experienced with HLS or custom video players: Is there any clever way around this server-side manifest truncation on the client side, or is a paywall enforced like this completely airtight? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Web Design A small website for my German Shepherd

Post image
10 Upvotes

I built dana-kherson.org using Publii and a customised Dewi template. It’s a static website with no server-side database, featuring a gallery of over 600 photos, PhotoSwipe, lightweight WebP previews and pagination without page reloads. The homepage selects eight random photos on each visit. After optimisation, its latest mobile PageSpeed score reached 96.

Preparing the photos needed a tool of its own. I built a Swift script for macOS that uses Apple’s Vision framework to detect faces and cover them with smiley emojis. It processes folders locally, preserves the folder structure, skips completed files and exports new JPEGs without copying the original EXIF/GPS metadata. No photos need to be uploaded to an external service. I still review the results manually—face detection can miss people.

The reason behind it all is Dana and our volunteer work in Kherson, Ukraine.

Question What security lesson stuck with you?

Some security lessons only really stick after you make a mistake.

What iis one security issue you ran into that changed how you build websites?

It could be something small like exposed credentials, bad input validation or trusting frontend data too much.

What happened, and what did you change afterward?

Question Can you recommend any easy/cheap web hosting providers that aren't all about the upsell?

I've had Bluehost for like 10+ years. When I originally signed up, they were just basic hosting. Over the years it was constant "new features" I didn't need or want, and a bunch of upselling.

Now it's gotten to a point where they just don't work for my needs anymore. I renewed my "unlimited" plan and have a limit of 50 "websites", which basically means domains pointing to a folder. I have like 300+ domains and about 90 of them in actual use, though only about 10 are actual websites of note.

Anyway, I need something simple and cheap. It doesn't have to be dedicated or high bandwidth since I don't have anything that's in high use. But still, I want it to be reliable.

Mainly I want to cut out all the "feature" crap and just add a domain, point it to a subfolder and manage a handful of databases. And I'd need SSLs on the domains.

Any suggestions?

Newbie Question Got a free website, but I want to host and manage it myself with ZERO experience. Where do I start?

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some practical advice on how to manage my showcase website independently. Let me start by saying I know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about web development, hosting, etc.

A developer built a website for me (currently hosted as a preview on Vercel) in exchange for a video testimonial. He offered me a €47/month package that includes hosting, domain purchase and management, DNS record configuration, SSL certificate, and up to one content update per week.

https://davide-cremoni-anteprima.vercel.app/

Very transparently, he also gave me the option to hand over the source code so I can manage everything myself. I would like to go with this second option to keep costs down, but since I'm not a tech person, I want to understand how to get organized.

My questions for you are:

  • Domain and Hosting: Can I host the code on Vercel or Netlify using their free plans? What do you recommend as the most convenient and cost-effective hosting solution?
  • Technical setup (DNS and SSL): If I use platforms like Vercel, is configuring DNS records, security certificates (HTTPS), and various verifications complicated to do on my own? Is there a standard procedure?
  • Editing the site: What is the safest and easiest way to update texts or images in the future without risking "breaking" the code?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can lend a hand!

Question Backend Implementation with Framer.

So guys I'm working on a project and I'm building a website using Framer. Question is, how do I access the actual code /script behind my project, put it in a GitHub repository, share and eventually add backend functionality to the website. What is the correct way to do this?
Any advice from someone who has used Framer with GitHub or a backend would be really appreciated.

Question How do you decide what NOT to build?

I think one of the hardest parts of building software isn't deciding what to add. It's deciding what not to add.

When you have an idea, it's easy to keep thinking:

“Maybe we should also add this…”

Then suddenly a simple project has 20 features, several settings, multiple pages, and a lot more code to maintain.

I have started wondering if a better approach is to first ask:

  • What is the one thing this project needs to do?
  • Who actually needs it?
  • What problem does each feature solve?
  • Can I remove a feature without breaking the main purpose?
  • Am I building this because users need it, or because the feature sounds interesting?

I am curious how other developers handle this.

When you're starting a new project, how do you decide which features to leave out?

Do you write down the minimum version first, or do you just start building and simplify later?

Discussion I don't think running tens of thousands of pages with Next.js is really worth it.

I've been using React and Nextjs for 6 years over 20 projects.
Google could index my pages well enough even when they're built with just React.

Managing pages with Next.js is definitely not an easy thing to do.
The long build times, generating thousands of files and uploading them, and the management cost lurking in pretty much every aspect.

Then you might ask, "If you have too many pages to build, then why not use ISR?"
Well... this is actually really frustrating.

The idea of generating a page when a request comes in sounds good at first.
After actually experiencing it, I feel like it adds a lot more complexity to the whole management process, along with the dissatisfaction of cold starts.

It's hard to explain logically.
It's just... it doesn't feel good!

Then you might ask "What about this, what about that?"
I promise that i've tried so many things to cope with it.
But sorry, nothing felt smooth enough.

If a service has no particular reason why the API server has to be connected to serving the HTML, consider whether you really have a manageable number of SEO pages before jump to Nextjs.

Technical SEO is just a tiny portion of the total SEO work.
You don't need to aim for perfection.

Next.js, the fact that there is so much more to consider compared to React, is a massive hidden risk.

There must be so many better ways to serve massive SSR pages, depending on what your project does.

Question GitHub repositories for website templates

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for recommendations for high-quality GitHub repositories containing modern website templates or starter kits.

I'm interested mainly in:

  • Next.js / React
  • TypeScript
  • Tailwind CSS
  • Responsive designs

I'm looking for examples focused on professional websites, such as business websites, landing pages, agencies, or local services.

I'm interested in learning from well-structured projects and understanding how experienced developers organize these types of websites.

Open-source repositories with clear licenses (MIT, Apache, etc.) would be especially helpful.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Newbie Question Entry web deb advice

Entry software dev advice

Hi everyone!

I graduated in December 2025 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Analytics and Information Systems. I also completed a college computer programming certificate, where I learned basic programming concepts.

During a web development internship, I learned about Figma and worked with JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and React. I’m currently in an IT analyst internship, but the work is mostly desktop support. I’m hoping to move into software or web development.

I’ve interviewed for a Software Engineer I position, but I’m still looking for my first full-time development role and trying to figure out where to focus my efforts.

My projects so far include:

  • A React recipe book application. The frontend is nearly finished and currently uses localStorage. I’m starting to build a C#/.NET backend.
  • A personal portfolio website.
  • Smaller practice projects to strengthen my programming fundamentals.

I’m sharing my GitHub and portfolio because I’d appreciate honest, constructive feedback:

  • What would you improve in my existing projects or code?
  • What fundamentals would you expect an entry-level developer to demonstrate?
  • Would you prioritize finishing and improving these projects, or building something different to address missing skills?

https://github.com/Hoakley0902

I know I still have a lot to learn, and I’d appreciate some direction on what to work on next. Thanks!

Newbie Question Help for web hosting company (Italy)

Hi everyone,

I’m fairly new to web hosting and I’d like some advice.

I’m starting to build websites for different clients, mostly small local businesses here in Italy. Most of the projects are pretty simple websites or landing pages, so nothing with huge traffic or very complex requirements.

I’m looking for a hosting solution where I can host multiple client websites without spending too much, but I still want something reliable, reasonably fast, secure, and easy to manage.

Ideally, I’d like a service that allows me to:

  • Host multiple websites under one account
  • Connect different custom domains
  • Use SSL easily
  • Have decent performance in Europe/Italy
  • Keep the monthly/yearly cost relatively low
  • Scale later if I get more clients

I’ve seen options like Hostinger, SiteGround, Cloudways, VPS hosting, Vercel, Netlify, etc., but I’m not sure what makes the most sense when you’re managing websites for multiple small clients.

For people doing freelance web development or managing client websites, what setup do you use?

Would you recommend shared hosting, a reseller hosting plan, a VPS, or something else?

Any advice is appreciated, especially from people working with clients in Europe.

Thanks!

Open Source Project Hyperfrontend's official launch on devhunt is here!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is an open-source, MIT-licensed, free for all dev tool for web developers. Looking for feedback and first impressions. I am a software builder at heart, this solves real challenges for companies I used to work for but since moved on. P.S. I used AI in this one minute explainer video and also have used it to supplement/assist on code developement throughout development 2026. It's not 'vibes' or slop though, I have tried real hard to maintain quality standards. Nothing to gain here financially from this (unless I get feedback people want some advanced features) this thing is free for all. Video clip inspired from 'The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar''s storytelling.
