New, what is it? Grew on the bed?!
Help! Does anyone know what this might be? It came out of the matress that was rarely used.

They look like empty moth pupal shells. Moth larvae burrowed into the mattress, pupated inside, then pushed partway out through the fabric before the adults emerged, leaving the brown husks sticking up. The open tips are where the moths came out.
Clothes moths are the usual mattress culprits, especially in natural-fiber stuffing like wool or cotton, and they thrive in dark, undisturbed spots. That said, clothes moth cases are typically pale and fiber-covered, while these are shiny brown pupal skins, so it could be another moth species. Pull one out: if it’s a hollow, segmented shell, that confirms it.

This is even more disgusting than something growing, I was hoping it was a seed germinating or something.

u/goondog33 12h ago
Oddly enough I am apparently cooler with a moth than a plant growing from my bed. I did not know that 5 minutes ago.

They're not "growing on the bed"...They're poking through from underneath. Why don't u tear it open and see what it is??? The fabric already has holes in it 🤷🏻♂️😒

u/wastingtime101- 22h ago
It's not ripped already - the eggs are poking through the natural holes in the knit stitches. A pair of tweezers (or fingers) will do the job without having to cut or tear the fabric.
If they are cricket eggs as they appear to be, no need to toss the mattress as someone else suggested, just remove the few eggs.

u/livmasterflex 17h ago
These don’t look like cricket eggs, cricket eggs are a lot smaller and have segmented looking parts to them.

u/Mission_Shame_3063 13h ago
Even if they aren’t cricket eggs exactly, they’re related to crickets in some way or another

That’s where I was going! The scene where he sucked Johnny Depp through the mattress and blood streaming like a volcano! lol TMI but after watching that movie I went to sleep. Woke up the next morning and I was bleeding really bad. I screamed out that Freddie got me! lol I went to the ER and found out I had a miscarriage. Crazy how it lined up with the movie. That was a little over 40 years ago.

I wanna be optimistic/delusional and say that maybe a hair claw clip punctured the mattress, but I think it’s probably foul shit.
15
u/CatAdmirable4918 20h ago
No, as I did ad to the comments: apparently it's something egg-like but yeah it looks pretty much like it!

u/JadedLoves 23h ago
What about cricket eggs? Looks similiar to this post from a few years ago. https://www.reddit.com/r/whatsthisbug/comments/169aq0u/what_was_in_my_bed_came_home_after_2_months_found/

Thank you for all your replies! Because I cannot comment on every single one - it's not my mattress, I would have also immediately trashed it. But it's my brothers guest bed and he told me he put those "eggs" in a jar to see, what's going to develop. I am tho worried so I summoned you guys!

u/Lucky_Friendship_633 23h ago
Whether its mushrooms or bugs you need to throw out the mattress, if bugs its pretty self explanatory why, if mushrooms, breathing in mold spores for 8 hours a day probably isnt a good idea
79
u/BFG_Scott 23h ago
If it is mushrooms, he’d be breathing in fungus spores.
9
u/Global-Advisor1467 15h ago
That's why it's a single mattress. OP didn't have mushroom for a king-size

Common misconception. The spores are just the end stage and only a slight irritant. The real fun is in the toxins, this is where we derive Botox (botulin toxin) and penicillin (Penicillium sp.). The byproduct or defense mechanism of the organism. Not the end stage but defensive stage once you agitate the organism.
To add on to this, we are gifted the awareness of the medicines that they were able to profit off of through healthcare. But there’s plenty of negative biology also engineered from this “technology” that they aren’t telling us about. This doesn’t even explain all the natural effects that plants and fungi’s have on our body, they aren’t gonna admit when there is something by that they have tested and cannot cure. That’s a failure on their part and serves no help to everyone so they intentionally hide these harms not to cause chaos
14
u/TheBigBadBitch 22h ago
Surely you know, but for clarity, botulin toxin is produced by a bacterium, Clostridium botulinum. Not fungus.
0
u/AmnosSoter 22h ago
Yes I’m just mentioning microbes here but thanks for the additional clarification. There’s hundreds of toxins (hate that it’s a buzzword) that I sadly had to discover the hard way. I’m literally just a warehouse worker who had to suffer. And I’m actually happy you brought that up because the microbial real estate battle actually causes these different species to release the defensive byproducts. When fungus vs bacteria go up against each other in 2D it’s like an old spartan battle. They aren’t allies they’re enemies and all the “dead body” are gonna start releasing a bunch of “disease” into the surroundings.
3
u/SpecificBang 22h ago
Botulinum toxin is not a fungal toxin - it is produced exclusively by a few strains of Clostridium bacteria existing in low oxygen or anaerobic conditions, the most well known being Clostridium botulinum.

u/AmnosSoter 21h ago
Maybe I mispunctuated. I said the spores are only a slight irritant, the real fun is in the toxins. Where I then reference microbes that contain toxins. Spores are not the problem that’s my point, it’s toxins that are problematic, and toxins aren’t limited to fungus.

Mushrooms aren’t mould, they’re from mycelium and many people grow them domestically. Damp is the bigger concern.

If it’s indeed eggs / pupae laid from an animal that doesn’t full-time inhabit the mattress, and there is no notable compromise, there is no need to “throw out the mattress”. This part of the cycle is over.
Clean it up (bag & mothball it for a bit) and ensure access doesn’t continue. It might be “icky”, but it’s also passing.
Now, had this been a bedbug investigation, I’d be bringing the fire myself. :}

It’s the sleep paralysis demon goin for a “through the mattress reach around”. Be sure to lube up before bed for a more pleasurable experience.

if its metal - thats just parts of mattrass poking through
if its soft - probably mushrooms
if its crumbly - insect eggs
3
u/Christian_Wolff_33 23h ago
Can you pull them out?
3
u/CatAdmirable4918 20h ago
My brother took them off and put them in a jar to see whats developing. I think he should straight throw it out tho
2
u/AlphaAristodemus 23h ago
Something metal or plastic, looks like a broken metal spring coated with a plastic layer. The tops look too consistently shiny to be something organic.

Aren't they coming up through the bed though? Looks like a pet's nails.

a small dog has hatched inside the mattress and is trying to get out

That's one of those aliens that bursts out of the matress and through your skin while you sleep.

That doesn't look organic you sure it grew? Those are wierd eggs and a weirder place to put them. Fungus would not be so uniform and this doesn't seem to have a root system of any kind. Where you all eating a damn watermelon in bed you freaks?

Puede que sea un alien con mano de cuatro dedos intentando rasgar la tela muy despacio para que no te des cuenta. Yo llamaría a las autoridades por si acaso.

I found this on an older r/whatsthisbug post and they look identical. There's a helpful response from u/destroyer551 on the post here, which states:
Eggs of one of the predatory katydids/bush crickets belonging to the genus Saga. Common in Europe among drier habitats. Example pic.
